sink in thai-tanic OK Aug 21, 2013

Categories : Thai | Restaurant | Rice | Kids-Friendly

when you first arrive at this old-school-decorated restaurant, you would already feel like you're in Thailand. however, when you settle down and look around, it has all the Thai settings, just as good as going to a Thai restaurant in Thailand.

you will be greeted by polite service staff who will hand you the menu and a paper for ordering. The menu categorizes well enough for your easy browsing and it comes with enticing pictures.

the food just lets you sink in thai-tanic...

1. Pad Thai with chicken - it is not the best but still one of the better in town. not too sweet and the gravy or stock are being soak up by the flat thin noodles. tinge of dried chilli enhanced the taste further.

2. Tom Yum seafood soup - it is clear and looks average, but the first taste of it just send some heat to your throat, and the subsequent mouthful just keeps you wanting more. the spiciness is just nice but just not sourish enough.

3. Thai Prawn Cake - it is the bomb! crispy and you can find three hug prawns stuffed in the batter! ultimately tasty!!

all in all, the food here is pretty great but just on a steep range smile

Hot and spicy OK Aug 20, 2013

I love thai food and chance on this place cos there is one hot stuff on their menu that caught my attention.

I went down on a weekday night for dinner around 7-ish and it was pretty empty. The menu looks pretty enticing and so we ordered a tom yum pasta and the highly raved genesis fish.

The tom yum pasta was fiery hot and even as a spice taker, i can't handle the hot and fiery one. The genesis fish was pretty decent just a little small for its portion.

The shop also offers one of the cheapest beers in town, so do check them out too!

The gentle giant Smile Aug 20, 2013

Don't be taken aback by this gentle giant!

It is indeed a great place for a DIY burger and it serves healthy range of burger buns smile Condiments and sauces are unique too!

The place is all automated using high tech iPad for order.

Service is prompt but the area is pretty small located at the basement of Far East Plaza.

Great for a fast and sumptuous meal but be prepared to get a little messy smile

It's a Thai Lady Boy :) OK Apr 26, 2013

I chanced upon this new chick through the IS-Asia mailer. This place is a fresh new bud located at China Square Central, and it just recently opened. Before you even entire the restaurant proper, you will be welcomed by the old school vintage style bringing you back to the 60s/70s settings, with posters lining the walls. The front section of the restaurant has a western Victoria setting and at the end, there is a stretch of small drawers just like those found in traditional Chinese medicinal hall where they store herbs. It may seem a lil out of place, but I love how the east-meet-west combi turns out to be. And of cos, not being the usual Thai restaurant, its cuisine is definitely has got some western fusion smile

WE were there on a Sat evening around 5-ish and the restaurant was pretty empty with 2 to 3 tables occupied (out of the 50 odds). The service staff greeted us with the typical "Land of Smile" smile and ushered us to the table. Actually to my dismay, I would prefer the service staff to be Thai rather than other nationalities, not that I despise or boycott any, but I would feel more at home with the same nationalities serving their homecooked food. Anyhoots, the dishes came promptly without any mistake but just that the prawn cake took exceptionally long to be served.

The food they served are pretty decent, nothing impressive, and lack the kind of homecooked, authentic Thai flavour. If I were to return perhaps, it would be more for their signatures such as Green Curry and Tom Yum Goong smile And for what they preached "Let all the good folks gather over shared meals and shared memories", I would give them a try again.

Oiishi sushi Smile Jan 25, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

This little and quaint place is newly open and it's still a hidden gem for now. The shop is a cosy one tucked at the corner and we were first greeted by a friendly service person. And I am so glad and relieved that she is a true blue Singaporean! Not that I am biased or what but I have yet since been served by a Singaporean for quite a while and the service that she provided was top-notch for such a small business smile She was well-versed with the menu and the food to recommend. With no pretentious settings and reasonable pricing, the place is a real precious! But it is still the best kept secret in Orchard, so ssshhhh...The chef behind the small open kitchen is friendly too, a young chap of probably 20s, really have carve a future in this arena, KUDOS!

THE SUSHI BAR

#03-89 Far East Plaza, 14 Scotts Road
Opening hours: 12pm- 9.30pm

The service girl recommended us salmon sashimi, Chicken Katsu Don and on our end we wanted to try the chanwanmushi, tuna and tamgo sushi. It was a table filled of food really!

Salmon sashimi was really fresh, you can taste the tenderness of the fish, simply oiishi to the max!

Chawanmushi tasted great too; the pudding-like texture just slide down your throat like water, smooth but not watery. The amount of sides in it complement the smooth egg mixture and of course the sweetness of the chicken stock just level up the simple dish.

And how can you not applaud for the Salmon Aburi Roll?! The blowtorching of the salmon just brings out the sweetness and accompanied with the creamy, miso-mayo sauce and the roe, it is just heavenly! A person who is really carb conscious, just like me, please beware of how fast you can mop up the intricately-plated sushi! It's simply AWE smile)

The tuna and tamgo sushi are pretty much above average as compared to the sushi-chains. The sushi rice has the aroma of vinegar and sweetness come running out of it when paired with the sides smile

The chicken katsu was well fried, not to stale but just taste normal. Nothing to shout or complain, however the sauce could have improved further as it tasted like sweet sauce for the popiah...

There weren't much room for dessert after the carb-filled meal but I will definitely be back for more and try out their tofu cheesecake (spotted that on the menu) but please DON''T change any for now!!!
