Not your regular steamboat joint Smile Jan 13, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Steamboat/Hot Pot

Thanks Openrice and Andrea for the invitation to Fu Lin Men Dou Lao. Great hospitality from the restaurant's staffs.

Fu Lin Men Dou Lao Restaurant is located away from the hustle and bustle from the central CBD. There were seven private rooms of different sizes where diners can have corporate events, business meetings, or even family gatherings without any additonal charges.

What's made Fu Lin Men Dou Lao different from the rest of the steamboat joints was their four speciality soup base. Each is created and named after feng shui elements. The Signature Golden Imperial Soup represents gold, wood is represented by Vitality Wild & Cultured Mushroom Soup, water by Longevity Tofu Soup and fire by Sizzlingly Chili Soup.

The Signature Golden Imperial Soup Base ($10) tasted rich and thick, was so good that I could just drink it on its own.

The Beer Marinated Marbled Beef ($28) has thin slices of marbled beef are soaked in Tiger beer for at least five minutes before being "brushed" a few times in the soup base. The taste of the beer in the meat was strong giving it a unique flavour.

The Family bliss freshly handcrafted Dou Lao Meat balls ($7) surprised me. The beef ball was stuffed with melted cheese and the squid ball stuffed with bitter chocolate. Not only the meat balls were bouncy, the unique combination tasted really good.

Other dishes for the soup not only looked good but also tasted good, includes Freshly cultured sea prawns with marbled beef ($18), Bountiful blessings of three teasures ($28), Wild bamboo pith with fresh prawn paste $18, Premier oxtail ($10) and Fresh beancurd pockets with fresh seafood paste ($10).

The Fortune Chalice ($38) has shredded sea cucumber, abalone, mushroom and rice. This dish reminded me of shark fins soup. The broth was thick and tasted full of goodness. The rice ball in the broth was mushy. My perference would be deep fried rice patties in the broth.

The House of Gold Pineapple Glutinous Rice ($9) was more like a dessert than a side dish. The fresh pineapple bits in soft glutinous rice was sweet and sour which opened up my palate.

The Grand Imperial Premium Bird's Nest ($28) has over-powering coconut milk and over starchiness texture. This dessert tasted more like a coconut paste.

Overall, the food at Fu Lin Men Dou Lao was good, though the prices were higher than other steamboat joints. The freshness and the uniqueness of the dishes would made me return to try more dishes.

The Harry's Breakfast Club Smile Apr 21, 2015

Thanks Openrice and Reka for the invitation to Harry's. Though the weather was scorching hot, the host, riverfront view and friendly staffs had make this brunch very enjoyable.

Harry's has just introduced their Breakfast Club, hence their current Breakfast menu are limited to 10 selections.

The Assorted Muffins ($2.90 each) was fresh from oven, bakery styled muffins, crisp on the top and moist, fluffy inside. The nuts and fruits gave the muffin a nice nutty and fruity aroma.

The Croissant Croque Monsieur ($12) was a ham and cheese on a croissant. Though looked simple, the taste was heavenly. Baked, crisp cheesy top layer with savoury ham on a fluffy croissant.

The Ham, Bacon and Mushroom Fry Up ($13) looked like an omelette before beating in a bowl. A simple pan fried sunny side up with savoury meat and fresh mushroom. Flowing yolk with cooked white. I still preferred an omelette style for this dish.

The Soft Boiled Eggs & Marmite Soldiers ($7) has a small pot, initially I thought the pot was Chawamushi. The Marmite Soldiers was too salty and the soft boiled eggs were under done, slightly watery.

Overall, I enjoyed having Harry's Breakfast Club, though the prices for some are slightly high for a breakfast meal in the business district.

Yellow Submarine Classic Smile Dec 30, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Fast Food | Burgers and Sandwiches

I saw the newspaper that this Yellow Submarine was opened by Mediacorp's 陈澍城. So when I was in Toa Payoh Hub, I was curious and went to have a try. I ordered the all time favourite on their menu, Yellow Submarine Classic Set at $9.90, with drinks and cheesy fries. The price was slightly high for a fastfood set meal.

The Cheesy Fries smelt of heavy cheddar cheese. The cheese sauce texture was ooey gooey, when I dipped the crispy French Fries into the cheese sauce, the taste was very yummy.

The beef baguette was also spam with the same cheese sauce. The filling inside seem like stir fried beef with onions. The combination of cheese sauce, beef and onions made me think of Vietnamese Bánh Mì. I liked the overall tasted, it was quite oriental. I think the beef baguette would be better if there was fresh green lettuce.

Spending per head: Approximately $9.90(Lunch)

Black Muah Chee Smile Dec 30, 2014
Categories : Food Court

There was a stall in Toa Payoh Bus Interchange foodcourt that sells nostalgic snacks, Muah Chee. I saw the menu board the Muah Chee came in two version black or white. I was curious about what was Black Muah Chee and decided to order this. The Black Muah Chee did not come cheap at $2.50 for smallest serving.

The Black Muah Chee was actually using powdered black sesame as the coating for muah chee. I liked the aroma of this Black Muah Chee, it has this toasted black sesame like sesame sauce.

I liked the bitefeel of this muah chee, sticky and chew It was not too dry or too heavy in rice flavour.

Overall, I liked this Black Muah Chee very much, it tasted very good, better than most in pasar malam stalls. Next time, I would want to try their white version.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.50(Tea)

K-Pop Grilled Boneless Thigh Set Smile Dec 29, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Korean | BBQ

It was lunch time at West Coast Plaza, I walk around and did not know what to eat. I walked pass BBQ Chicken and saw their lunch set menu looked cheap and appetising. Hence, I went in and order the K-Pop Grilled Boneless Thigh Set at $10.90. The K-Pop Grilled Boneless Thigh Set came with fried rice and a drink.

The K-Pop Grilled Boneless Thigh arrived on my table with heavy aroma of grilled meat, it smelt so good. The grilled chicken meat was juicy and tender, especially the skin was marinated with bulgogi sauce. I liked the savoury, caramel kind of sweetness in the marinate sauce.

However, the fried rice was slightly soggy and bland which I did not like. The salad was normal but I found it strange to eat salad with rice.

Overall, I liked the K-Pop Grilled Boneless Thigh, next time I will order with french fries instead of fried rice. I was still puzzled why they named it as K-Pop.

Spending per head: Approximately $10.90(Lunch)
