Wanton Mee Kia OK Dec 25, 2014

At Tampines Mart Kopitiam, there was a new Wanton Mee stall that had just opened. This Wanton Mee stall was a branch from the famous 1st Love Wanton Noodle at Geylang Bahru.

There was not mush queue during Lunch hours, hence I ordered the Special Wanton Mee set which cost $4.80. If using Kopitiam card to pay, there was further 10% off menu prices. This set contained not only Wantons and Char Siew but also braised chickn feet. The portion looked big for this price. There was generous crispy pork lard given.

The fried wanton tasted good, inside there was generous marinated pork with spring onions. The Char Siew was yummy with sweet malty outer layer and tender fatty meat inside. The star was the braised chicken feet, it was very fragrance and braised with herbal sauce.

However, the mee kia was disappointing. It was soggy and lump together. I guess the stall holder had over-cooked it.

Overall, the Wanton Mee was one of the better ones around this area. If not for the soggy noodles, it would be the best.

Spending per head: Approximately $4.80(Lunch)

Katsu Don Smile Dec 25, 2014

There was a budget Japanese Eatery at the basement of the Westgate. The eatery was always full during meal times. The decor inside the eatery was old style with many photographs of Japanese olden days.

I had ordered the Katsu Don at $7.90. This was a self service eatery, order and payment first and then wait to collect your order. The order was freshly prepared, hence the waiting time was about 5 minutes more. The condiments such as preserved red ginger and spring onions were self served.

The Katsu Don tasted good, except the rice. The rice was soggy and not a sticky as Japanese rice. The pork fillet tasted good, crispy on the outside, tender and meaty in the inside. I wished the pork fillet can be more fatty. The omelette tasted very good like half boiled egg, so smooth and silky.

Overall, the Katsu Don was good and the price was so much affordable among those Japanese restaurant or fastfood in its vicinity.

Singapore-style Ramen OK Dec 25, 2014

When I heard that Amoy Food Centre was going under renovation for the next 3 months, I quickly went to have a try of "A Noodle Story" before it closes.

I reached there after Lunch time and I thought it was closed as there was no queue. Luckily the stall holder said they ran out of Char Siew but still able to make me a bowl of noodles.

I ordered the normal "Singapore-style Ramen" at $5.50. This pricing was not cheap consider other noodle stalls in the vinicity.

When the dish came, I was very surpised by the generous portion of ingredients in the bowl. There was a fried prawn, 4 big wantons and an braised egg. The ganishing also looked appetizing and Japanese.

What surpised me most was the braised egg, it had a melting yolk and tasted very good, so much better than those from Japanese Ramen stalls. The wantons were meaty and the fried prawns really had a big prawn inside, I thought it was of more flour.

However, I found that the noodles were disappointing. The noodles used were local Mee Kia. The Mee Kia tasted soggy and the akaline tasted was a bit on the high side. The sauce and Chilli for the noodles was slightly too salty, I prefered a lighter taste.

Overall, the "Singapore-style Ramen" can be better if they use more springy egg noodle .

Spending per head: Approximately $5.50(Lunch)

Popiah Smile Dec 25, 2014

No matter at which hour, this Popiah stall always has a long queue. I think the price also plays a part, nowadays Popiah usually cost $1.50 and above. But this stall still selling at $1.20!

I joined in the queue and ordered 2 Popiah. The waiting time in the queue was about 20-30 minutes!

The Popiah looked good, portion was average size with generous fillings. The Popiah tasted as good as it looks. The fillings such as bean spourts, lettuce and bangk wang, was moist, juicy and braised sweetness. There was generous chilli and sweet sauce, though the amount of chopped garlic can be more.

Overall, I find that this Popiah one of the best in the western area, even better than the Clementi Central one.

Spending per head: Approximately $1.20(Tea)

Roast duck & Char Siew Rice Smile Dec 25, 2014

Categories : Hainanese | Hawker Centre | Chicken Rice

I was intending to eat chicken rice at this Tanglin Halt Food Centre, but it was closed for today. Hence, I went to another chicken rice stall. Although their signboard put Hainanese Chicken Rice, their stall display was mostly roast duck, char siew and roast meat. I did not see any cooked chicken on display.

The queue was short during Lunch time. Hence, I ordered Roast Duck & Char Siew Rice at $4.

The Roast Duck & Char Siew Rice was surprisingly good. The roast duck meat had a slight crispy char skin and juicy, tender meat with a little bit of fats under skin.  The Char Siew was also good, with sweet malty outer layer and tender lean meat, though I prefer the Char Siew to be more fatty.

I also noticed that they used fragrant thai rice, not the usual plain white rice used by most other roast meat stalls.

Spending per head: Approximately $4(Lunch)
