Yong Tau Foo Smile Dec 26, 2014

Categories : Food Court | Chinese Soup | Noodles

I was walking along Katong and found that most of the cafe sells western food. I wanted to have local food during Lunch, hence I walked to Katong Shopping Centre basement foodcourt.

The varieties of yong tau foo in this stall was many until they need to put out another table for customers to choose the ingredients. I chosen 10 items and it cost $5.

The fried Yong Tau Foo items were deep fried, piping hot and crispy after cooked, unlike other stalls that drenched into water to cook.

I find the dark sweet sauce was more salty than sweet, I should have put lesser into the Yong Tau Foo dish.

There was a small bowl a soup given for ordering dry version. The soup tasted of soya bean and sweet meat broth.

Overall, the Yong Tau Foo was good due to the freshly deep fried items.

Spending per head: Approximately $5(Lunch)

Matcha & Aruki  Smile Dec 26, 2014

There was a long queue of customers at the Tai Parfait. I wonder what was so good, hence I joined in the queue.

I ordered the Matcha & Aruki at $5.50. The wait for the order was slightly long as the pastry was freshly grilled when ordered.

The Matcha & Aruki was very cold when eaten from the top. There was thick flavoured matcha ice cream on top. The bottom part was piping hot, nearly burnt my tongue. the filling was very sweet hokkaido red bean paste. The crust of the pastry was very crispy and tasted very light.

Overall, the Matcha & Aruki tasted very good. But the pricing was very high consider it was just a red bean pastry with little ice cream.

Spending per head: Approximately $5.50(Tea)

Char Siew Bun Smile Dec 26, 2014

There was a Hong Kong Dim Sum kiosk in Westgate basement food hall that I always wanted to try.

I bought their steamed Char Siew Bun, 6 for $5 or $1 each. The Char Siew Bun size was quite small. The Char Siew Buns are freshly steamed when ordered, hence need to wait about 5 minutes.

The Char Siew Bun had a very fluffy skin, though when eaten the skin will lump into a dough. The filling was char siew with oyster sauce. It tasted good with the right amount of fatty meat and roasted lean meat.

Overall, the Char Siew Buns tasted good and affordable prices.

Spending per head: Approximately $1(Tea)

Bak Chor Mee Pok  Smile Dec 26, 2014

This Bak Chor Mee stall was featured in Channel 8 “Just Noodles 面对面”. Hence, there was a long queue during Lunch time. The queue time was about 20 minutes.

Initally I wanted to order their famous curry noodle, but when it was my turn to order, they had just soldout, hence I ordered the Bak Chor Mee Pok.

At $3, the Bak Chor Mee Pok had generous portion of meat and pork liver. I had noticed that this Bak Chor Mee stall used button mushroom instead of Shitake mushroom.

This Bak Chor Mee tasted good. The mee pok was springy and cooked just right. There was right amount of pok lard oil in the mee pok that made it silky smooth when eating. The minced meat tasted soft and tender, I guessed that they had marinated the meat before.

Spending per head: Approximately $3(Lunch)

I was attending an event at Safra Tampines and during Lunch there was not much restaurant option there, hence I went to Mind's Cafe. The decor of this cafe was cosy like a living room with sofas and board games.

The menu of Mind's Cafe was extensive. I ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Focaccia Sandwich at $7.90. The wait for the meal order was quite long, about 15 minutes. I guessed they freshly prepared the meal when ordered.

The Teriyaki Chicken Focaccia Sandwich portion was average but the filling was big. The Teriyaki chicken meat was as big as a chicken chop meat. The bread tasted slightly rough and powdery. The Teriyaki chicken tasted good, nicely grilled, very tender and juicy. I should have order their grilled chicken chop instead.

Overall, the Teriyaki Chicken Focaccia Sandwich was good and the price was reasonable at this location.
