Cheng Teng OK Dec 30, 2014

Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

It was a hot day today. I went to the hawker centre to find some cold dessert and stumble upon this stall. The menu looked extensive and the prices were affordable. I ordered a cold Cheng Teng at $1.50.

The Cheng Teng had more ingredients than I thought. There was sweet potato in the Cheng Teng soup and the usual sago, barley, white fungus, etc. What I found missing was the dried persimmon. But this Cheng Teng was quite filling to the stomach due to the sweet potato.

Overall, this Cheng Teng was cheap and good. Nevertheless the Cheng Teng was refreshing and thrist quenching for me.

Spending per head: Approximately $1.50(Tea)

Yellow Submarine Classic Smile Dec 30, 2014

I saw the newspaper that this Yellow Submarine was opened by Mediacorp's 陈澍城. So when I was in Toa Payoh Hub, I was curious and went to have a try. I ordered the all time favourite on their menu, Yellow Submarine Classic Set at $9.90, with drinks and cheesy fries. The price was slightly high for a fastfood set meal.

The Cheesy Fries smelt of heavy cheddar cheese. The cheese sauce texture was ooey gooey, when I dipped the crispy French Fries into the cheese sauce, the taste was very yummy.

The beef baguette was also spam with the same cheese sauce. The filling inside seem like stir fried beef with onions. The combination of cheese sauce, beef and onions made me think of Vietnamese Bánh Mì. I liked the overall tasted, it was quite oriental. I think the beef baguette would be better if there was fresh green lettuce.

Spending per head: Approximately $9.90(Lunch)

Black Muah Chee Smile Dec 30, 2014

There was a stall in Toa Payoh Bus Interchange foodcourt that sells nostalgic snacks, Muah Chee. I saw the menu board the Muah Chee came in two version black or white. I was curious about what was Black Muah Chee and decided to order this. The Black Muah Chee did not come cheap at $2.50 for smallest serving.

The Black Muah Chee was actually using powdered black sesame as the coating for muah chee. I liked the aroma of this Black Muah Chee, it has this toasted black sesame like sesame sauce.

I liked the bitefeel of this muah chee, sticky and chew It was not too dry or too heavy in rice flavour.

Overall, I liked this Black Muah Chee very much, it tasted very good, better than most in pasar malam stalls. Next time, I would want to try their white version.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.50(Tea)

Rojak OK Dec 30, 2014

Categories : Food Court

There was a popular Rojak at the Toa Payoh Bus Interchange basement. The queue was very long, at least 30 minutes wait in the queue. When it my turn to order, the stall holder prepared the Rojak very fast in less than 5 minutes.

The Rojak was noticeably different with many toasted peanuts. The peanuts was crushed, powdery and add to the dryness mouthfeel when eating the Rojak. There was too many peanuts until some of that sticked to my throat.

The Rojak sauce had a mild prawn paste aroma and taste. The sauce was also mild sourish. I felt the Rojak sauce tasted more like savoury sweet and sour sauce for pork ribs than prawn paste sauce.

The ingredients in the Rojak included cucumber, mangkuang, freshly toasted taupok and fritters. Although the fritters were freshly toasted, they were slightly chewy and hard.

Overall, this Rojak was average, to me it was not worth to queue for 30 minutes. I would still prefer Rojak with heavier flavour of prawn paste and lesser crushed peanuts.

Spending per head: Approximately $3(Tea)

Grilled Terderloin in Brown Sauce OK Dec 29, 2014

While I was shopping at Nex, I was craving for western food but the restaurants there mostly sells local or Japanese. When I walked pass the Mad Jack with striking signboard, I decided to go in for a try.

I order the Grilled Terderloin in Brown Sauce at $22.90. The grilled terderloin came quite fast to the table and I could smell the grilled meat aroma. The serving portion of the meat was smaller than I expected.

The terderloin meat was tender and juicy and easily cut, but the taste of the meat was somewhat bland. I guessed I had to dip the meat into the brown sauce to add flavour. The dipping brown sauce tasted similar to thicken KFC mashed potato sauce and I liked it.

Overall, I find that the Grilled Terderloin in Brown Sauce was average in taste. At this price, I would expect the meat to have a better flavour and quality.
