Niang Dou Fu Smile Dec 25, 2014

This Niang Dou Fu stall at Ayer Rajah Hawker Centre only open from morning to Lunch and it was always long queue. Today, when I see the queue was shorter, I went to have a try. The queue was fast even though there was about 5 person infront.

The signboard wrote that all the Niang Dou Fu were homemade. There were quite a number of varieties of Niang Dou Fu to choose from. I chose 10 items and total cost $5. The condiments such as sweet sauce, chilli sauce and crushed crispy pork lard were self serviced.

The dark purple sweet sauce tasted very good with fermented bean taste and was mild salty and sweet. The Niang Dou Fu also tasted good and was pre-fried, with generous fish paste in it. Although I ordered dry version of Niang Dou Fu, there was a small bowl of soup given. The soup tasted good with soya bean and pork broth taste.

Overall, this Niang Dou Fu was good but the prices I felt was slightly high for a meal in hawker centre.

Spending per head: Approximately $5(Lunch)

Nasi Lemak Set B OK Dec 25, 2014

Nowadays, you can hardly find any stall selling $2 nasi lemak. Today I passby Jurong West and saw a stall with a big signboard showing $2 sets. There was a short queue at this stall.

I wanted to order Set A with the fried chicken wing but was soldout. Hence, I ordered the Set B added vegetables and the total cost was $2.80. The serving portion was large at this pricing.

Without chicken wings and ikan bilis, Set B felt more like Cai Png with coconut flavoured rice. The rice had a mild coconut aroma but was slightly soggy. The sambal chilli was good, sweet and spicy with belacan taste, but I found the sambal chilli was out of place without chicken wings or ikan bilis to dip into. Their fried long bean was very good, the long bean still had the crispy crunch and had "Wok Hei".

Overall, I find this Nasi Lemak was good, hopefully the next time there would be Set A available.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.80(Lunch)

Mutton Chop Cry Dec 25, 2014

I always wanted to try Indian version of Western Food and I went to this popular Roti Prata stall opposite Bukit Batok MRT. It was mid afternoon and inside the eatery was very warm and stuffy, despite they switch on air cooler.

There was Mutton Steak and Mutton Chop on the menu board. The stall uncle told me that Mutton Chop was the one with french fries. The price was $6, similar to hawker centre's Western Food stall.

The Mutton Chop was delivered to my table after about 15 minutes. The amount of french fries in this dish was alot, more than double the amount of mutton meat.  The mutton meat looked spicy with red chilli paste sauce.

The mutton meat tasted quite bland, tough and dry without the spicy chili sauce. It seem like the mutton meat was from the Kambing soup, cut in cube form.

The french fries was slightly over-fried, too crispy for mine liking.

Overall, I still prefer the Mutton Chop from the hawker centres.

Spending per head: Approximately $6(Lunch)

Mee Rebus Smile Dec 25, 2014

This Malay stall at Yuhua Hawker Centre always soldout before Lunch hours. Today, I reached the hawker centre early and decided to have a try on their food. According to their signboard, they used healthier choice ingredients for their dishes.

I ordered the Mee Rebus at $2.50. The stall lady was very friendly, asking me whether I need more celery or beanspourt for my Mee Rebus.

The Mee Rebus looked not only smell good but also tasted good. The gravy was thick and flavourful, I could taste the fermented soya beans in the gravy. The gravy was not too spicy, just right. There was also a lot of shallots added which add to the overall taste of the Mee Rebus.

Overall, although I was not sure which healthier choice ingredients they used but the Mee Rebus sure tasted good.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.50(Breakfast)

Curry Deep Fried Beancurd Hor Fun Smile Dec 25, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Malaysian | Chinese | Food Court

There was a new food court at Suntec City Mall level 3 after the renovation. The foodcourt mostly sells local delicacy. What caught my attention was this Curry Ipoh Hor Fun stall. I had eaten Ipoh Hor Fun many times but have not tried in curry before.

Hence, I ordered the Curry Deep Fried Beancurd Hor Fun at $4.50. There was a further discount of 10% if using the Kopitiam card for payment. The wait was pretty fast for the order and this Curry Deep Fried Beancurd Hor Fun serving portion was big, using an oval plate.

The Curry Deep Fried Beancurd Hor Fun had a heavy aroma of curry from the curry gravy. The curry gravy was thick, spicy and tasted very good. The Hor Fun was silky smooth and slight springy, something like the Chee Cheong Fun cut in a thinner version. The fried beancurd was a bit disappointing, it was hot and crispy on the surface but inside was hard and tough. I guessed they had over-fried.

Overall, this Curry Ipoh Hor Fun was good. But next time do not order with fried beancurd.
