Chwee Kueh OK Dec 29, 2014

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Hawker Centre

Before Ghim Moh Hawker Centre closed for renovation, I went to try the Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh. There was no queue at this stall and I thought they were closed. Luckily the aunty at the stall said that they still have left some to sell to me.

Their menu board had a price for 20 pieces at $6 but I wonder who was such big eater buying 20 in a go. I just bought 8 pieces for $2.40 for myself.

The Chwee Kueh had little "Cai Poh". The "Cai Poh" tasted more sweet than savoury. The Chwee Kueh was just right not too soft or too floury.

Overall, this Chwee Kueh was not oily but was average in taste. There was too little "Cai Poh" given.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.40(Breakfast)

Chocolate Log Cake Smile Dec 29, 2014

My family had redeemed a Chocolate Log Cake using credit card points at Marina Mandarin Hotel. Since Christmas Day was already over for a few days, the Christmas decoration on the log cake was not given. Nevertheless we accepted the cake since it still looked presentable.

The Chocolate Log Cake had a soft and fluffy cake texture that blended with the chocolate cream. Both bended so well that I could not differentiate between which was the cake layer or the cream layer. It was not a swiss roll as other bakery's log cake. The cake was rich in dark milk chocolate taste which was slightly bitter sweet.

Overall, I liked the rich chocolate taste and texture of the Chocolate Log Cake, if only they could add some fruits or nuts to the chocolate cake would be better than a single flavour one.

Wanton Mee OK Dec 29, 2014

Before the Ghim Moh Hawker Centre went for major renovation, I went to try the Kong Shang Hua Wonton Noodle which had a long queue in the morning. The Wanton Mee cost $2.50 and the serving portion looked good.

The Wanton Mee was old school traditional type without any special homemade sauce. I ordered a dry version with no chili and only tomato sauce was added.  The noodle was egg type mee kia, it was slightly springy without the akaline aftertaste. The tomato sauce gave the wanton mee a sweet and tangy taste. The char siew was lean and the wanton was meaty with crushed dried fish taste.

Overall, I felt that the wanton mee tasted average, it would be better if they use a savoury soya based sauce.

Spending per head: Approximately $2.50(Breakfast)

Peanut Ice Kacang Smile Dec 29, 2014

Categories : Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

Before Ghim Moh Hawker Centre went for a major renovation, I went to try Annie's Peanut Ice Kacang. There was a short queue but the preparing of dessert took a longer time. I ordered the Peanut Ice Kacang at $2.

The Peanut Ice Kacang serving portion was large and tall, there was also a lot of peanuts given. The peanuts gave the Ice Kacang a salty taste and drier mouthfeel to the syrup flavoured ice. There was generous red bean and agar agar under the syrup flavoured ice. It was refreshing and thrist quenching on a hot day.

Overall, I liked the peanuts on the ice kacang, it gave a sweet and salty taste. However, do warn that the serving was big, I could not finish the whole bowl of Ice Kacang by myself.

Spending per head: Approximately $2(Tea)

Beef & Mutton Redang Smile Dec 29, 2014
Categories : Peranakan / Nonya | Halal

I am a rendang beef lover. After Sanur Indonesian Restaurant was closed, I could not find a good rendang beef that had tender beef meat and gravy well absorded into the meat.

My friend had recommended to try this Old Bibik's Peranakan Kitchen ones. I ordered the Rendang Beef & Mutton set. I wanted to add vegetables to the set but was soldout for the day.

Both rendang meats had a nice aroma of dark soya sauce, grated coconut, star aniseed and other spices. I really cannot differentiate between which was beef or mutton. The meat was well cooked until the gravy absorbed into the meat. The meat had a layer of fat, was tender and soft. It almost melted in my mouth.

The chili tasted raw and very spicy. Too spicy and over powering for the enjoyment of food.

Overall, the Rendang meat was very good but the meat serving portion was slightly small.

Spending per head: Approximately $9.90(Lunch)
