Identified simply by the two word "KUEY CHAP" and a stupendously long queue, this stall is definitely one of the best kuey chap stalls in Singapore. Insisting on only the freshest ingredients, there are only selected days when the delectable small intestines (Fen chang) are available. On these occasions, the regulars would be there the minute they open at 6pm and it'd be sold out within an hour!

As the hubby calls it, this is the quintessential teochew comfort food for him. The kway chap itself is just perfect, not overcooked, its texture is just nice, smooth and just the right thickness. The broth is also light, not oily and not too salty. It's just nice if you're looking for a soupy dinner. Best of all, the innards are clean and fresh tasting. Will definitely recommend eating in because everything is so fresh and is best eaten hot on the spot! There is often a long queue because the owners makes everything from scratch, nothing pre-made or reheated. You'll get your every bowl of kway chap cooked just before served to you. Of course, most importantly, it's cheap and great value for money!

Although they used to be in the coffee shop at Blk 92, they have now also moved to the Lorong 4 Hawker Centre at Blk 93, Toa Payoh Lorong 4., #01-198 Singapore 310093. So do look for them there!

My husband is a foodie and one afternoon he whisk me off to tiong bahru market at lunch hour just to have something different to eat for a change. As much as I love my food, I don't know enough of the old school flavours as he does. And Koh Brother Pig's Organ Soup is definitely one of THE old school flavours in Singapore that you MUST try.

Naturally because it's so famous, long queues await you. However, it will be worth the wait. Of course you must love pig organs like me. But not only that, the pig organ soup uses big slabs of real wholesome salted preserved vegetable. And that is, personally, one of the key to making good pig organ soup, authentic giam cai! YUM! just remembering it makes me drool. Sadly the hubby chatted with the folks running the stall and they said their children not interested in taking over the business. I really hope this is not the sad end to good food.

One of the other hard to find old school flavours at Koh Brother is the intestine stuffed glutinous rice with chestnut. It's the first time i had it and it's apparently rather difficult to find stalls that still make this. Definitely interesting.

Working just opposite Maxwell Chambers, Funan Weng is my absolute favourite place for dinner after work, or a quick bite in between late nights at the office. The CBD is usually closed early, and restaurants that are open are usually very expensive. Otherwise you've have to sit in the hot humid hawker centre. If you want somewhere quiet, with excellent food for an affordable price in comfort of air conditioning, this is the place for you!

And I haven't even started raving about the food! Funan Weng has a long history over 3 generations from Hock Lam Street to the old food court above Funan Centre (before it became an IT Mall!). This is why it is called FUNAN Weng after all! To remind us of its very popular times at Funan Centre which my hubby still recalls with fond memories whenever we eat there.

The hor fun is slippery and q at the same time, the stock is light but flavourful, just the way we love it! The prawns are halved but huge and the char siew is delectable. The best part is the handmade dumpling (Which they also sell frozen ones for you to bring home!). It is HUGE. There is a whole prawn inside and it's juicy and delicious! The beef brisket hor fun is also very delicious! Everything on the menu is worth a try! Haven't encountered a bad dish yet!

For those of you who are feeling under the weather or the weather is just cold and rainy, I'd definitely recommend the hor fun soup. It's not what we usually think of when we hear "ipoh hor fun" but this is something to be experienced! Of course the dry ipoh hor fun and its yummy sauce is the standard not to be missed. If you worry about getting your outfit dirty, you can even ask for a plastic bib from the staff!

Despite it being located in the CBD, it is open on weekends too! In fact, you can bring the whole family as there is actually a play area for kids on weekends! Lots of toys which you can entertain the young ones with! They also recently started a breafkast menu but I've yet to try it.

Be warned though, lunch time the crowd can be numerous! But if you go often enough, you'll realise they have a different promotion every month! Our favourite is definitely the buy 2 set for the price of 1! So I'd definitely recommend looking out for their promotions!

Quaint and Cozy Dining Experience Smile Apr 04, 2011

A friend introduced me to this quaint little cozy noodle house along smith street. For those unfamiliar with Smith Street, you may find it difficult to find the restaurant as there are no clear signboards so remember to keep the address on hand! It may be easy to be overlooked with all the crowd and distraction of food stalls on smith street.

The first thing that strikes you when one enters the restaurant is the photos of the chef with customers holding up a large strand of handmade noodle. This must be the original open concept I suppose. We ordered two bowls of handmade pork and preserved vegetable "la mian". The soup is clear and refreshing. The la mian is a bit inconsistent in texture but generally quite good.

What really strike me are their unique "onion pancake" (cong you bing) which is disc shape and rather thick, unlike the usual flat pancake we find in most northeastern chinese restaurants. For that, I'd go back and dine there again! Unfortunately they close at 10 and they were closed the 2nd time I visited!

We discovered this zhi char stall when it was featured on a channel u food programme on interesting zhi char stall. The 3 dishes that were featured on tv were the crispy duck, the cai por (preserved radish) hor fun and its been hoon with crab. We were so excited with what we saw on tv that we had to give it a try. Took us a while to find the place but we finally made it! The 3 dishes featured were now extra popular and there were signs everywhere featuring the 3 musketeer.

The cai por hor fun is supposedly now a very rarely-found dish in Singapore and to find it at a kopitiam is just fantastic! Dean's Cafe is essentially a chinese restaurant, in a coffeeshop setting and prices. The cai por hor fun is super nice and value for money. The hor fun is cooked like and has the texture of carrot cake. it's cool!

The crispy duck was a little disappointing mostly because we bought it to go, so by the time we reached home, the duck may not taste as good. Would recommend eating it on the spot.
