Chanced upon Tiferet Tea Room while googling for some afternoon tea location. Tiferet Tea Room is located in Katong V Mall. The place is very modernized and lightly dim, you thought you are in a pub or something, it really does have that feel! Also the place sounds very ang moh right and probably you thought there will be a wide range of tea like flower tea, english tea etc but you’re wrong! This place actually sells traditional chinese tea and they offer dim sum as their snacks too which is quite an interesting concept. I believe you will only get to see such concept in traditional tea house? They do have some selection of cakes too. However, it feels kind of weird drinking chinese tea and having cake as desserts?
They are quite professional but yet at the same time quite disappointing. They are professional in the sense where they will pour out the tea from the white pot into the glass jar and after which, they will let you smell the aroma of the tea from the white pot. At the same time, disappointing because they mixed up the tea themselves, so in the end when we got the tea, we tried to differentiate ourselves which is which and in the end we got wrong too. :/
Ginseng Oolong ($8 per pot): Scented with flower petals and usually used with green tea. Turn out that this tea does not have strong ginseng aftertaste, it’s rather subtle and light.
Oriental Beauty ($9 per pot): This is suppose to be sweet tasting, but end up has more ginseng note compared to what Ginseng Oolong should have.
As a result we are pretty confused with what we are drinking since we are not experienced with all the different kind of chinese tea.

Dim Sum set ($8): Consists of the typical favourites, siew mai, har kar, glutinous rice wrapped in pandan leaves etc. All the siew mai, har kar taste like microwave food to me. Kind of dry and tough. But the glutinous rice is not bad, the flavour and taste is good.
Ambiance was good, looking over the stretch of katong and very chillax but overall experience with the food and tea was kind of average, and i think the staff there needs to have better knowledge of their tea range.

Finally a trip down to Wheeler’s Yard. Impressed by the decoration and cool bikes but disappointed by the food. As you may or may not know, Wheeler’s Yard is based on a bicycle workshop concept with the incorporation of cafe. From the exterior walls, metal bins and gates, totally give you the workshop feel. Furthermore with bicycles lined up just at one side of the area, and another filled with seating tables. I would say it’s one of the more unique themed cafe. And the decorations don't just end there. There’s more within the cafe area too.

There’s bicycle statues on some of the bigger tables and safety helmets hung on the wall as part of the decorations. When you step into the cafe interior, it gives you the feeling that you’re somewhere out of Singapore for a moment. It’s spacious, with mixture of wooden fixtures and comfy sofa, not a typical cafe you’ll commonly seen in singapore. Also, there were a few art students doing their sketching and drawings of the surroundings there.
But all the pretty cool decorations aside, the food is nothing worth raving about. It’s a total disappointment.

There’s a decent variety of food ranging from starters, mains, pasta, weekend brunch, coffee etc. For one the price are not that cheap. So at least i will expect something decent for that price. But sadly, it’s otherwise.

Cheese Fries ($9.90): Chef recommendation. but it just feel normal or worse then normal. It’s just cheese and fries right, how bad can it be right. It get soggy in no time, and just feel gelat after eating awhile.

Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs ($18.90): It’s served on toast with a garden salad. Salmon is heavily smoked with salt, no other taste other than being salty. Scrambled egg that tasted milky and plain. It obvious that some taste is missing. Bread is not toasted either. Usually bread should be slightly toasted to complement the whole dish.

Shrooms Aglio Olio ($17.90): Al dente pasta is the norm and basic requirement. But this spaghetti is just undercooked. The pasta is hard and whole dish is just dry and oily.

Fish & Chips ($18.90): Comment by my sis who ate it: Not recommended. Thick batter, crumbly fish. Nothing fantastic.

So overall, its a place worth going for the ambience but definitely not for the food.

Not to satisfy stomach Cry Jul 24, 2014

Decided to try out Once Upon a Rosti during one of my lunch break. It’s located at AXA tower basement. I’ve been very keen to try out this place for quite sometime! But its rather disappointing. ): I’ve ordered the Sir All Day Breakfast Double Rosti value meal ($9). It came with a drink. The set consists of a mini omelette, cheese, chicken italian sauce and a turkey bacon. The rosti has been drizzled with sauce, its not the crispy on the outer and soft on the inside kind. It feels quite "gelat" halfway through the meal. It feels like you are eating oily mashed potatoes with sauce. Even the topping are a tad too plain or too salty. The greens made it better because of the refreshing taste. Probably for a quick bite but definitely not a meal to satisfy the stomach.

totally not worth the money Cry Jun 28, 2014

We wanted to go to the old airport road hawker for dinner before going to maple & market for desserts. But so unluckily the hawker is closed for renovation. Then we wanted to try brawns & brains, but they are sold out for the day. So, our last alternative is cafe melba. Cafe Melba is more like a restaurant rather than a cafe actually. European and Victorian interior design, open concept kitchen. They have both interior and al fresco seating. Good ambiance but i would say quite disappointing food quality given the expensive pricing.
so we ordered, Chicken Parmigiana ($24). Its like breaded chicken with tomato chutney and mozzarella cheese with mixed leaves salad. There’s a choice of shoe-string fries or wedges. I would say it one of the best among all the dishes. At least the chicken is flavourful and tender and portion is still reasonable. (largely due to the wedges = potatoes chunks). Linguini aglio olio ($18), the portion is really pathetic, i think it can probably be finished within 5 mouths? Crayfish linguini ($27) and lastly Vongole of clams and squid ink pasta (500g, $19). The pasta is totally dried, undercooked, rubbery. The clams are still decent though with white wine flavour. All in all, i could say quite a disappointing experience there.

Allured by the attractive deal of BBQ buffet with free flow alcohol at 50% discount on Thursday’s Ladies Night, we made a reservation with Oasis Restaurant @ Grand Hyatt. It was definitely a very different experience and expectation i had from a buffet within a Hotel.

First impression, unlike the typical buffet line in a hotel setting where the dining area is usually air-conditioned, with comfortable seating and extensive selection of food, Oasis offers an alfresco dining with by the pool seating and had a total different focus in their food selections. It mainly revolves around BBQ meats with limited variety on salad, seafood on ice and their dessert selections. What makes it distinctive, is none other than the offering of free flow alcohol throughout the night. Alcohol choices include Red Wine, White Wine, Prosecco and Magaritas. They do serve soft drinks and juices for the non-alcoholics drinkers too.

Prosecco – Sparkling wine originating from the Italy region.

Magaritas – Choice of Lime, Strawberry and Mango. It was the sweeter version of the cocktail. I was disappointed by the fact when we were told that certain flavors were no longer available when we ordered later into the night and in the first place it was not available right at beginning of the buffet too. First, it was a free flow alcohol night, shouldn’t you ensure, that all flavors should be made available right from the start till the end of the buffet?

Garlic Bread that was served to each table. The garlic bread turns out to be surprisingly good with the aromatic toasted garlicky flavor on the warm soft bread.

Choice of Salads available. Something that is really light and simple. Enjoyed the potato salad best of all.

Only Oyster and Prawns for Seafood on Ice. Though the oysters are a little small, but they are rather juicy and sweet and the prawns on the other hand are much bigger than what you usually see in other buffet line. It is fresh and succulent too. Thus, even though they only have 2 varieties, the quality was commendable and you will always be back for more!

Here the BBQ line which includes Beef, Chicken Thigh, different kind of vegetables such as capsicums, brinjal, sweet corn, asparagus, mushrooms, Sausages, Fish Fillet, Lamb Chop, Prawns where you can see the chef preparing them over an open charcoal fire grill. Among all, i love the beef slices the most, it’s tender and juicy. The rest are pretty common and safe choices while some, mainly mushrooms comes with a bitter charred taste. Lamb chop was another disappointment, it’s kind of under-cooked, resulting it to be tough and chewy.

Here’s a Noodle Section where you can choose your own ingredients for the chef to cook it according to your preference over the hot stone. Otherwise, there’s pre-cooked fried noodle for the taking too.

Once you’re done with the heavier tasting BBQ meats, you can indulge in some sweet refreshing desserts. There’s not much selection, 1 chocolate based and a couple of fruit based desserts cups. There’s Vanilla and Chocolate soft serve too.
All in all, will i pay the full original price for this buffet? I would say no, but at 50% price, yes, once in a lifetime experience. The quality of food is there, but after all i’m there for a buffet, i would really appreciate more variety. I could see the in-charge trying to emphasize on service standards rendered to us consumers, but there are times where our orders of drinks were forgotten and we need to keep calling out to the waitress/waiters which can be quite frustrating. If you would like to go, remember to make your reservation in advance!
