HAKKA DELIGHTS OK May 19, 2016
Categories : Hakka

Plum Village, located along Upper Thomson Road, has been selling authentic hakka food. It is probably the restaurant that has the most comprehensive menu of hakka delights.

Mummy’s birthday is round the corner so we decided to bring her to eat her favourite food – Hakka delights since my family are all hakka.

Abacus Seed ( 算盘子 ) is made up of yam and tapioca flour. Yam was being steams and mashed up before adding in tapioca flour. It was then roll into small little balls with the centre being indent in. It was shaped in this way signifying reunion and signifies wealth. In most of the shops selling abacus seeds, it was mixed with more tapioca flour so as to save cost and to increase chewiness. But in Plum Village, more yams were added (similar to household making method), giving it a denser texture yet a stronger yam fragrant. Mushroom, carrots and minced meat was stirred fried with it. It would have been better with more mushroom , carrot and minced meat was added.

Preserved vegetable with porkbelly 梅菜扣肉 served in plum village was disappointing. This is because the pork belly was slightly dry and wasn’t tender. The dish was not salty enough. Usually this dish tends to be more salty as the preserved vegetable was braised with the pork belly over long period of time to enhance the pork belly taste. This process brings out the saltiness within the preserved vegetable.

Broccolis were stirred fried with oyster sauce. It was remarkable that the broccolis were still crunchy and green because it was usually very soft and soggy when I purchase these dish elsewhere.

Sea Cucumber Stir Fried with Snow Peas 海参炒扁豆 was my dad favourite dish as he say that the sea cucumber was very nutritious. The sea cucumber was springy and chewy. It was well marinated and braised with oyster sauce.

Homemade Beancurd ( 家乡豆腐) was my favourite dish as the beancurd use was very smooth, coupled with the slightly salty minced meat and mushroom, it helps to appetite me.

The fried prawns in Hakka wine (红槽虾球) was something my mum missed greatly. It was something that my past grandma regularly cooks. The prawn was stirred fried in red glutinous wine. The taste was not something most can appreciate. It tasted like sweet beer. I found it slightly diluted but the prawn used was fresh.

Meatball and cabbage soup taste really normal like those we can cook at home. But it is worth mentioning that the meatball was well marinated. We order this dish as we wanted something to drink since in plum village, the only available beverage was coke and Chinese tea.

Prawn and meat roll (五香) was pretty decent. It was crispy and not oily. They are all handmade from scratch.

Hakka Yong Tau Fu (客家酿豆腐) is a must –try item for people visiting hakka restaurant. Fried beancurd was stuffed with meat fillings before steaming it. It was tasty.

If you are looking for decent hakka food, you can popped by to plum village. The food was pretty decent but do not keep your expectation too high as the food are labour-intensive so the quality might varies.

SUPERMILK – ARTISAN ICE CREAM & KITCHEN.

It is located at in Commerze@Irving situated at Tai Seng. We find the place the commerze very happening as there are many cafes in a row. All these cafes have one common trademark – Tinted-black windows and closed door. From the outside, you might think that all these stalls are closed for the day but in fact, they are not.

Direction to go to Commerze from TaiSeng Mrt will be shared later.

After having dinner at 优饭 (which is situated beside the Supermilk), we decided to have desserts. Scanning through the menu from different stalls, we settle for supermilk. I must say that the owner was friendly. We visited the place at about 8pm where there is no other customers around. They served us ice water which we browse through the menu. They even went on to introduce their specialties.

From the menu, “bubble waffles” caught my eyes as I simply have no idea how it will look or taste.

Cosy Environment

The orange lighting coupled with soothing music played in the café creates a very chilled and cosy environment to be in. After a short wait, the bubble waffle arrived on our table!!! This
is when I realized that bubble waffle referred to the egglet waffle.

The bubble waffle was crispy on the outside but soft and fluffy in the inside creating a contrasting taste texture. Furthermore, the waffle was topped with chocolate syrup, cereals, love letters and mini marshmallow. Personally, I find the waffles too dry for my liking, would be better if they are more generous with chocolate syrup or provide some maple syrup
to go with it.

Bubble Waffle ( $10.90) . There is no gst & service charge in this
cafe

Direction To Café:

From Exit A, Turn left and you will see this construction site. Follow the arrow and
you will see Commerze@Irving. Once u see commerze, supermilk is located at level one, by the side of the road

Located opposite National Library, Rabbit Owl
Depot has specialize in handcrafted ice cream has opened its door in October 2014.
Snowflakes waffles, artisan ice cream, tarts and coffee in this café where its
theme is owl and rabbit. You will be greeted with mini owl and rabbit toys at every
corner, complimented with diy wooden chairs and tables.

In search for something sweet after our dinner,
we chanced upon rabbit and owl depot. It was on a weekday night so we kind of
have the whole place to ourselves. After trying various flavor, we settled with
pistachio ice cream and strawberry cheesecake.

To know what the palor is serving, all you have to do is to look at the menu hang at the wall. They do not have paper menu for you to look at.

*Update* I have recently went back on April 16, 2016. The environment still looks the same, cosy as previous. Now, they have the menu at the table for diners to look at.

Like any other ice cream, they have various flavors for you to choose from and sample before purchase. The boss was very friendly and patient with us as we really took a very long time deciding and literally try every single flavor available.

In this pistachio ice cream, the pistachio nut flavor is strong perhaps the nuts were lightly roasted before being added to the ice cream, thus the sweet smelling fragrance. The ice cream was really creamy, smooth and milky.

Strawberry cheesecake ice cream has always been one of my favourite ice cream flavor. Here, the strawberry cheesecake was also creamy and the tinge of strawberry jam could be detected lol

It was worth mentioning that the snowflake waffles were delicious. The hot, crispy and fluffy waffles sprinkled with icing sugar on top compliment the ice cream a lot. However, I find that the serving was tiny.

Waffles with our Pistachio & Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream

*Update* The pistachio ice cream still taste great! This time we have decided to go for thai milk tea ice cream. It was really delicious. It was as though you are drinking the sweet milky tea down your throat, except this is in the form of ice cream.

*Update* I notice that the palour started selling prawn crackers. We are allowed to sample it and I like it greatly as it was crispy yet not oily.

Utensils and complimentary drink for the diners

Despite the palour being small in size, it was actually quite cosy and suitable place for meet-up session due to its decent ice creams, highly accessible location as well as quietness of the café.

A Heartland Cafe in Hougang/Kovan OK May 19, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

Hatter Street Bakehouse and Cafe is a new café having the Alice in the wonderland theme opened in the heartland of Kovan/Hougang. It serves coffee, ice cream and waffles and
a small selection of cakes. They are known for their Pandan Gula Melaka waffle.

Hatter Street Bakehouse and Cafe is highly accessible as there are many HDB parking lots around the area and a bus stop right in front of the cafe. As the café do not have much seating space, it is usually packed with people. We have waited for about 30 minutes before securing our seats.

Since it has gotten its name after alice in the wonderland, the café was also decorated with scene of the fairytale.

Some of the cakes like brownies are placed in the cake display on the right to catch your attention. After looking, you will be tempted to order more than you need.

“It’s So Kumquet” is basically a lemon tart with sweet cream. It has a buttery, crunchy crust filled with delicious sweet-sour lemon custard surrounded by sweet cream. For sour lover (like me), you will find yourself enjoy this tart greatly.

It’s so Kumquet (SGD$6.00)

YOLO was the new addition to the café cake selection. It consists of cream cheese, chocolate fudge, chocolate ganache, chocolate frosting, chocolate cake and vanilla cake. You will be overdosed with chocolate. The cake was slightly hard, but it was surprising not overly sweet.

YOLO Cake ($7.50, i think)

Whoaffles ($8.90) were their best seller. It was meant to “wow” you with their waffles. Since it’s their best selling items, we have order the waffles with chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce and the Pandan ice-cream with Gula Melaka. We have to wait for about 30 minutes before it was served. After a long wait, we can’t resist eating after smelling how fragrant the waffles were. Thus we started eating the chocolate waffles without waiting for
the Pandan version.

The waffles were crispy with a strong “egg” flavor. The chocolate ice cream was rich in chocolate but tends to be too much after eating for long. For the pandan ice cream, it was aromatic and rich in flavor while the gula Melaka drizzled on top of it was really sweet.

Located along the same street with many cafes, Churn Creamery was the newest addition to the busy Tanjong pagar ‘café’ street. It took over Restore Living Café at 124 Tanjong Pagar, selling decent gelato ice cream with molten chocolate cone.

The café has a white, simple and “rustic” theme for diners to enjoy. There is also alfresco dining area for diners to enjoy on breezy day or during peak period.

One interesting flavor was the mystery flavour where diner can have the chance to guess the flavor and win a free scoop of it. Mystery flavour will change monthly, so you can pop by monthly to challenge your taste bud.

Like any other ice cream palour, it does serve many decent ice-creams. The staff was really friendly to serve us by introducing to us their best sellers and interesting flavor.

One thing to note, there is a unique chocolate tap located in the café to fill the cone.

The price of the ice cream is reasonable as the servings are generous. After thoughtful selection, we selected the double scoop (Valrhona Manjari & English Breakfast) . In addition, we also add their famous molten chocolate cone.

Double Scoop ($7.80) - Valrhona Manjari & English Breakfast

Valrhona Manjari: 64% cocoa was being used. This helps to create a hint of bitterness prevents it from being overly sweet and “jelat”.

English Breakfast: It was mixed with caramel. The natural tea and caramel taste helps to create an refreshing flavor. However, this flavour tends to be slightly sweeter.

Molten chocolate cone ($1): The cone crispy and filled with generous amount of chocolate lava.

Apart from ice cream, they also serve cakes, waffles, brownie and sticky date cakes. ChocolateBrownieã Churn Creamery

Churn Creamery was located right beside Mac-nels and directly behind the bus stop. For a decent hangout place and decent dessert, why not popped by and have a try. Whats’ more – challenge your taste bud with mystery flavour.
