Located along Amoy Street, Wanton Seng's Noodle Bar serves traditional hawkerism and modern fusion wanton noodle. A collaboration that has given the famous Seng's Wanton Mee of Dunman Food Centre a modern twist.

Here at Wanton Seng, they serves lunch and dinner menu where lunch they offer their wanton noodles with aburi pork belly, roasted pork belly or both and a handful of sides for sharing. As for dinner, you can order a bowl of plain noodles, or what they called it here as Nudles, then add your choice of premium sides to go along with it.

Being my first visit, its not difficult to guess that I will order their two-some goodness to have the best of both worlds.

Two-some Goodness (S$7.50)
I opt not to add on condiments so as to taste the goodness on its own. The roasted pork belly that I had was not that crispy but its still yummy with no oily feeling. The aburi pork belly on the other hand was tastier in flavour, however I felt its not tender enough. Noodles was springy and delicious on its own without having to add on any other sauces. Of course not forgetting the boiled wanton which is tasty though the filling might be a little salty.

Fried Wanton - 6pcs (S$5)
As the noodles doesn't comes with fried wanton (not sure if we can request for it), we ordered some for sharing. Well, this definitely pales in comparison with the boiled version.

Under their lunch menu, you can opt to add S$1.50 for soft drinks or juices (ala carte price at S$2.50) when you order pork belly wanton noodles. So we chose cranberry and orange juice to complete our meal.

Mak's Noodle Smile Oct 24, 2015

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Restaurant | Noodles

Referred to by many as the Hong Kong best wonton noodle, 麥奀雲吞面世家 has opened its doors in Singapore. I didn't have the chance to visit their first shop at Centrepoint, so I was thrilled when I saw their Westgate outlet.

Long queues was seen forming since their opening. I passed by at a hour where there wasn't any queue so here is the chance for me to check this place out.

Service was good and orders were served rather fast. Hence, it would not be a long wait for seats even if there is a queue.

Wonton & Dumpling Noodle Soup (S$8.50)
Hong Kong's well known wonton noodles 細蓉 that are served in small portions. Noodles were springy and the texture was just right, not too soft. The skin of the dumplings were thin and prawns were fresh. Just that, given the size of the serving, it might not be able to fill the stomach of some.

Luo Han Guo (S$3.50)
Freshly made luo han guo is refreshing and soothing to the throat. A good choice especially on hazy days.

Hong Kong Style Ting Zai Congee (S$7.50)
Smooth textured congee was tasty even on its own. It is not necessary for extra seasoning unless you prefer stronger flavour. Cuttlefish was soft and chewy with fresh fish slices. However, the fish slices were too thinly sliced that you could hardly notice.

The Carving Board Smile Jul 18, 2015

Categories : American | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches

A hidden gem in the west!

Operating during the dinner time slot in a coffeeshop which serves dim sum in the morning, The Carving Board offers a wide variety of delectable western cuisine which includes snacks, grills, burgers and spaghetti.

I saw reviews that this place is rather crowded and its a long wait before the food is served to you. I guess we were lucky as we did not need to queue to order our food because we reached there before the dinner crowd starts flowing in.

We saw the place slowly being filled up while waiting for our food to be served.

Well, it didn't take too long for the food to be served.

Homemade Ice Lemon Tea (S$1.80)
Rather refreshing drink. However its a tad too sour making the taste of the tea not so prominent.

Rosemary Chicken Chop (S$7.50)
Tender chicken meat with the sauce complementing the whole dish. The fries on the other hand was a little disappointing as its not hot and crispy.

Norwegian Salmon Steak (S$14)
The salmon steak was fresh and though its well done, the meat is not tough. A pity I didn't have the chance to ask the owner what is the grains that was served together with the salmon steak (I thought it looks like millet) as its quite delicious. A rather good substitution for rice.

Barbecue Pork Chop (S$9)
I usually don't order pork chop because the places that I have tried mostly had the pork chop too overcooked making the meat quite tough. I decided to give this a chance as this is one of the chef recommended dish in the menu.

This is indeed worth trying. Meat was tender and succulent with a tinge of the barbecue taste. I especially love the potatoes that comes with it. Its soft and tasty, definitely better than some other places.

There are still so many other items in the menu that we have yet to try. Definitely will return some day to check it out, especially their handmade burgers.

Yoogane @ Westgate Smile Jun 06, 2015

Categories : Korean

Started in Busan, Korea since 1981, Yoogane is considered one of the most popular and best chicken galbi restaurant in Korea.

Not only in Korea, having opened their second outlet in Singapore, they are rather well-received here as queues are always seen forming outside the shop.

Don't be taken aback by the queues which seems to give the impression that its gonna be a long wait. It really did need a little time for the service staff to clear the queue due to the fact that you need to place your order first before you will be ushered into the restaurant.

The first thing that the service staff showed us when we were seated was the built-in drawer where all the cutlery and tissue are placed.

Red aprons are placed on all tables for every customer to wear it on to prevent being spattered by the sauce or oil during the cooking process. It's also a great helper for preventing your clothes from staining if you accidentally dropped the food. Kudos to the restaurant for such thoughtfulness.

Apart from the apron, ice water are also an item that can be found on each table. Readily prepared for those who need to cool down the hotness of the spicy sauce.

Help yourself to the salad bar situated at the centre of the restaurant for sides like kimchi and pickles.

With choices of juices, alcohols, hot and cold teas in the menu, this is what we are having today.

Brown Rice Green Tea and Barley Tea (S$1.90 each)
The two refillable tea in the menu where the barley tea has a very strong roasted fragrance while the brown rice green tea needs no further introduction. Hot beverages are definitely better cooling agent for spicy stuff.
Refillable...

According to the service staff, their popular item that is widely liked by their customers gotta be the chicken galbi. We are fans of variety so we went for the seafood and chicken mix instead.

Something to take note, every order of the main item has to be in a minimum of two portions, so its rather impossible to dine alone here unless you have a big appetite.

Seafood and Chicken Galbi (S$52.90 2 to 3 pax)
Tender chicken meat, baby octopus, squids and prawns marinated with their unique blend of spicy sauce and seasoning.

The cooking is done right in front of your eyes by the service staff.

You may opt to add on rice or noodles for a more filling meal. Select from a variety of noodles ranging from ramyeon noodles, sticky noodles to udon noodles.

Ramyeon Noodles (S$3.90)
One portion of chewy noodles. Its delicious when cooked together with the rest of the ingredients and blended with the spicy sauce.

Ingredients were fresh and the unique spicy sauce is spicier than I thought but still bearable for a person who can't really take spicy stuff. We first thought the one portion of ramyeon noodles might not be enough to fill two stomachs but it turns out we were so full our stomach almost burst.

Harry's @ Clarke Quay Smile Jun 01, 2015

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches

Thank you OpenRice for inviting me to this food tasting event at the new outlet of Harry's, situated at the bustling vicinity of Clarke Quay, and checking out their revamped menu.

Renovated with travel theme, this place makes you feel the warmth of a home once you enter it. They have also transformed a corner into a cozy room which is ideal for group get-together to watch your favourite sport matches.

Good news to all fanatics. No more worries when hunger strikes halfway through the match, Harry's now serves delectable stomach filling dishes under their new menu.

"Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer"

For this food tasting, we were treated to 10 items from their new menu which consists of 3 small plates, 1 platter, 2 big plates, 1 dessert and 3 alcoholic drinks.

Small Plates

Fish Cracklings (S$13)

The eel fish skin is so thin and crispy that it really goes "crackling" on every bite. Served with aioli (garlic mayo) for those who doesn't like it plain. As for me, I prefer to eat it on its own as the spice mix that is sprinkled on it already gives enough flavour to this.
Very crispy

Very crispy

Harry's Signature Wings (S$13 for 6pcs, S$19 for 10pcs)

Crispy wings dressed in a secret spice, is considered spicy enough on its own for those who can't take spicy stuff like me. Go with their popular special formulated chilli jam that taste like sambal chilli to level up the spiciness of the wings.
Quite spicy

Crab & Potato Cakes (S$19 for 6pcs)

Shredded blue swimmer crabmeat mixed with mashed potato, this really have the strong "crabby" taste. Though its fried till golden brown, it doesn't feel oily at all. Have it with the Sriracha tomato dip to enhance the flavour.
Strong "crabby" taste

Harry's Premium Lager (S$13)

Perfect pair with small plates. Being not a beer fan, I didn't ask for a glass as I do not want it to go to waste. Well, I guess I have missed something good.

Platters

Jalapeño Steak Sliders (S$13)

Semi tender grilled steak topped with charred bell peppers and jalapeño cheese sauce. Bell peppers give these bite-sized burgers a tinge of heat yet not too spicy. A little disappointing as this taste quite normal with no surprise factors.
Quite Normal

Big Plates

Chicken Masala (S$23)

Was quite surprised to find this here as I was in the impression that only western-styled dishes are served here. Tender chicken chunks in rich spiced gravy served with toasted charcoal bread, this is indeed flavourful. Rather amazed by the bread as it really looks like blocks of charcoal.

Crabmeat Spaghettini (S$23)

This tomato based spaghetti may taste a little monotonous for some but I find it perfectly complements the fresh crabmeat. The simplicity of the tomato sauce enables you to taste the freshness of the handpicked crabmeat which I was lucky enough to have eaten some crabmeat chunks. A not so fanciful dish that brings out the best flavour of the ingredients.

Dirty Harry (S$16)

Enjoy a glass of their signature cocktail of vodka built with brown sugar and lychee liqueur with the big plates. Fruity taste with very high liquor content (at least its high for me), a pity I have to control my intake as I can't hold my liquor well.

Desserts

Toffee Apple Crisp Tart (S$14)

Thin sliced apples on a pastry crust drizzled with salted caramel and served with vanilla ice cream. One of my dining partner commented that its too sweet but I find the sweetness acceptable. The letdown of this is the crust which is not crispy making it a little difficult to cut. Sweet dessert with a tinge of saltiness makes this different from the rest.

Moscato (S$13.50)

Fruity dessert wine with 12% alcohol. Sweet and refreshing, definitely suitable for people who can't take alcoholic drinks. You can bottoms up this without having to worry of getting drunk.
