Tuk Tuk Cha OK Aug 24, 2015

Categories : Thai

Tuk Tuk, the iconic three-wheeled vehicle in Thailand, has driven their way to Singapore. Parked at Suntec City, Tuk Tuk Cha not only offers a selection of beverages but also snacks that are great for tea time breaks.

The beverages they serve here does not confine to Thai teas or coffee. They have in their menu home-made lemon tea, lemonade and roselle for non-milk lovers. Matcha latte, hojicha and chocolate are also available for those who don't fancy Thai drinks that much.

Thai Milk Tea (S$2.80 - Regular)
Unlike the other place that I always frequent, here they do not have an option to choose for milder or stronger Thai tea flavour. The ones they serve here really have a high tea content. Suitable for those who loves the stronger version.

Thai Green Milk Tea (S$2.80 - Regular)
For those who love milk base beverages with a not so high tea content. This green tea pairing with milk drink is rather fragrant.

Home-made Roselle (S$2.80 - Regular)
The perfect drink that makes you feel less sinful after eating all the toasts.

As for the snacks menu, other than the golden and tom yam toast that we tried, they do serve the two popular Thai dessert/appetizer - sticky rice mango and mango salad.

Golden Toast (S$3)
Milky white bread drizzled in butter. Air fried to make it crispy and achieve the golden look. Pair it with your favourite dip or toppings from the selection available and viola, there you have a perfect snack to go with your drink.

A little disappointed as we wanted to try their Home-made Taro Kaya and Home-made Thai Tea Kaya but it's out of stock.

with Home-made Pandan Kaya (Add S$0.80)
The pandan kaya dip is not too sweet but lacking the pandan flavour.

with Condensed Milk + Milo (Add S$0.80)
Recommended by the staff. This is indeed the best of the three. The milo powder complements the condensed milk making this full of flavour in every bite.

The never go wrong dip choice. Definitely for nutella fanatics.

Tom Yam Toast (S$2.50) with Chicken Floss + Egg (Add S$1)
Tom Yam chilli sandwich. Have it with either chicken floss or egg or you can opt for both like what we did for an extra dollar. The tom yam taste was not very evenly spread out so certain piece was spicier than the rest. Nonetheless, this is quite a tasty combination.

The Square @ Novotel Singapore OK Aug 06, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Hotel | Buffet

Here at The Square, you can find an array of international cuisine in ala carte selection or buffet where they feature different themes every month for their buffet menu starting with Peranakan in August.

Peranakan buffet, priced at S$58++ (Adults), is available for dinner on all days.

So, here we go, starting the Peranakan journey.

Bakwan Kepiting
The traditional Bakwan uses pork and crabmeat but the chef here replaces the crabmeat with chicken. Though the Bakwan was quite springy and flavourful but its a tad too salty.

Nonya Style Asam Fish
Two different version was served - steam and fried. Groupa was fresh but its not sourish enough and not too spicy. The disappointment of this dish is that the fish did not absorb the flavour of the sauce. As for the fried version, the skin taste a little soggy and oily.

Chicken Devil Curry
Chicken was rather tender however, its way too spicy for me. The chilli padi that was used is really so devilish making the spicy level in this dish so high that it has a numbing effect on my tongue.

Ayam Buah Keluak
Tasty gravy with tender chicken meat but I do find this dish rather salty.

Kueh Pai Tee
The most popular dish among OpenRisers. The thin kueh pai tee cups stayed crunchy with all the moist ingredients in it and the fact that it was left on the table for awhile before we consume it. So its no surprise why we couldn't resist and asked for second serving.

Babi Pongteh
The chef chooses pork ribs over pork belly for this dish not only enhances the flavour but also makes this a little less sinful. Though the ribs was semi tender, its fully immersed with the flavour of the gravy.

Traditional Nonya Kueh
The meal will not be complete without having some desserts. Agar agar and assorted kuehs are served and this marks the end of the Peranakan journey.

As the food tasting was in July, we also got to try their Sweet Indulgence buffet other than the August Perankan buffet menu.

Pastries are definitely the highlight as it is creations by Chef Sin Siak who was featured as chef of the month in July's La Vie Magazine.

Durian Pengat
Their signature dessert. Made with fresh durian and gula melaka. The taste of the gula melaka stands out first with the durian taste slowly emerging out. A little letdown as the gula melaka is abit too overpowering resulting this dessert to be a tad too sweet.

Chocolate Nutty Cake
This is the cake that I like best among those that I have tried. The smooth textured chocolate mousse with bits of nuts at the base is not as sweet as it seems to be.

Oyster Fritter
Specially prepared for us by Chef Jimmy. Juicy fresh oysters coated in fried batter paired with the secret recipe sauce, this is simply delicious.

The Carving Board Smile Jul 18, 2015

Categories : American | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches

A hidden gem in the west!

Operating during the dinner time slot in a coffeeshop which serves dim sum in the morning, The Carving Board offers a wide variety of delectable western cuisine which includes snacks, grills, burgers and spaghetti.

I saw reviews that this place is rather crowded and its a long wait before the food is served to you. I guess we were lucky as we did not need to queue to order our food because we reached there before the dinner crowd starts flowing in.

We saw the place slowly being filled up while waiting for our food to be served.

Well, it didn't take too long for the food to be served.

Homemade Ice Lemon Tea (S$1.80)
Rather refreshing drink. However its a tad too sour making the taste of the tea not so prominent.

Rosemary Chicken Chop (S$7.50)
Tender chicken meat with the sauce complementing the whole dish. The fries on the other hand was a little disappointing as its not hot and crispy.

Norwegian Salmon Steak (S$14)
The salmon steak was fresh and though its well done, the meat is not tough. A pity I didn't have the chance to ask the owner what is the grains that was served together with the salmon steak (I thought it looks like millet) as its quite delicious. A rather good substitution for rice.
Delicious

Barbecue Pork Chop (S$9)
I usually don't order pork chop because the places that I have tried mostly had the pork chop too overcooked making the meat quite tough. I decided to give this a chance as this is one of the chef recommended dish in the menu.

This is indeed worth trying. Meat was tender and succulent with a tinge of the barbecue taste. I especially love the potatoes that comes with it. Its soft and tasty, definitely better than some other places.

There are still so many other items in the menu that we have yet to try. Definitely will return some day to check it out, especially their handmade burgers.

PappaMia @ Marina Bay Link Mall OK Jul 01, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Malay | Malaysian | Halal

My friend got this mixed up with the other Pappa restaurant due to similarity of the name which aroused my curiosity to conduct a search and results shows that...not all Pappa are the same...lol.

Here at PappaMia, you can find a variety of unique Asian cuisine and being a Halal certified restaurant it is no surprise why it is so crowded especially during meal times. However, this place might not be so ideal to catch up with friends as its rather noisy during their peak hours making it quite difficult to interact.

So concentration on the meal begins.

PappaMia Chicken Rice (S$10.50)
The well known Chef Han's chicken rice. The rather not so attractive of this dish is the chicken and vegetables are portioned and placed in the plates in advance ready to be served once an order is made making it lacking the freshness feel. Nonetheless, the chicken meat is still tender and vegetables are soft. The rice however is a tad too dry.

Pappa Chicken Satay Burger (S$12)
Tender chicken patty that goes well with the satay sauce which is not spicy at all. Fries are the soft type and it still taste good even when it turns cold.

Kampung Fried Rice (S$12)
Fried rice was tasty but the spicy level is on the high side for me. The satay meat is tender just that it would have taste better if its served hot.

Matt's The Chocolate Shop OK Jun 14, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

Situated in a row of shophouses along Amoy Street, Matt's The Chocolate Shop has been in operations since 2012.

The shop specialises in dark chocolate fudge and takes pride in good old-fashioned chocolate cakes made from former-banker-turned-baker Matthew Chow's original closely guarded recipe.

We were welcomed by the rich chocolate aroma the moment we pushed open the glass door and as we paced into the shop, we noticed the tables and chairs available for dine-in are rather limited due to space constraint.

Music playing from the small white player not only injects life to the shop but also has a calming and soothing effect on one's mood.

Paying them my second visit after many months with the anticipation of trying their new items especially their tiramisu. However what came was the news of disappointment, they have temporary stopped production of tiramisu as they are still sourcing for a supplier for one of the ingredient.

Nonetheless, they still have other new items in the menu like their Chocolate Truffles which cost S$12 for a box of 9 and Chocolate Chip Cookies priced at S$6 for a box of 150g.

However, we are not having any of these for our aftermeal indulgence.

Latte (S$4)
My dining partner ordered this and she commented this has a strong coffee effect.

Ice Berries Soda (S$3.50)
Drink of the day. This refreshing drink is neither too sour nor too sweet with the soda not too overly gassy making this cold berries beverage a good choice for drowning away the chocolate richness.
Refreshing...

Pandan Buttercake (S$3.50)
Though drizzled with gula melaka syrup, the sweetness of this cake is considered moderate. Bringing gula melaka onboard this cake makes this so different and its amazing how well it complements with the pandan. A rather good alternative if you are not into chocolates.

Matt's Fudge Cake - Small (S$4)
Their signature fudge cake that also comes in medium which is priced at S$30 and S$50 for a large.

The cake is moist and dense in texture with the fudge so rich in chocolate taste yet not overly sweet. Very thoughtful of them to make it in this size where one can satisfy their cravings without feeling too guilty.
