Bread Yard Smile Nov 02, 2015

Categories : Bakery | Café

Situated in an environment with quite a number of offices around, you really can expect quite a crowd during lunchtime on weekdays. Two visits there and both days Breadyard was full house.
Prices between $7-$10

Prices between $7-$10

Selling point of this place, good yummy bread made in-house and also affordable prices on their menu. Tried the following food items on 2 accounts:
(1) Pumpkin Soup $3

- Pumpkin soup is thick and creamy, tastes semi sweet and light. It comes with soft pumpkin chunks inside and croutons scattered on top. A great start before the mains.
(2) Mushroom Soup $3

- This creamy-rich soup is full of mushroom bits. Flavour tastes just right for me, not salty and made me feel comforting when consumed warm on a rainy day.
(3) House Salad $3

- A combination of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes and alfalfa sprouts. Drizzled with sesame dressing which doesn't seem to have existed. It's was bland, dry and definitely need dressing pump up! Colours are pretty though smile
(4) Bettino Platter $10

- A hearty all day breakfast platter with back bacon, honey baked ham, salad, choice of eggs on Breadyard's Hokkaido bread.
Highlight here is the Hokkaido bread used. Made inhouse with natural leaven and flour liquid roux. First bite and I'm in love with its texture, so soft like a pillow! Bacon was pan-fried to give that slight crisp on the edges whereas ham was served as it is. I chose scrambled egg for my set but it was slightly overdone thus abit hard.
(5) Smoked Chicken Sandwich $8 with added Side Salad for $2

- Country bread used was on the dry side. Smoked chicken breast was rather tough and hard on my teeth. The french beans paired inside the sandwich wasn't a good idea too. Garlic butter and honey mustard dressing could be more, to perk up more flavour in the sandwich.
(6) Ham & Cheese Sandwich $7

- Honey baked ham, red apple slices, cheddar cheese, bechamel and honey mustard dressing on a slice of Hokkaido bread. A simple, light combi which you could easily make at home. I would suggest granny smiths instead of red apples slices used as the natural sourness can excite our tastebuds more. Luckily their soft and fluffy Hokkaido bread made in-house saved my day! Happy!
(7) Coffee $4

- Breadyard uses Sumatra blend from Brazil. Coffee was slight kicky and has a very mild fruity orange aftertaste.

Verdict: Dining experience at Breadyard was pleasant. Staff are attentive and friendly. Although not every food item was impressive but at least their price is competitive. A great lunch hangout place at Fusionpolis. If you're busy and in a rush, Breadyard does provides takeaways and deliveries to nearby offices too.

Two Bakers Smile Oct 30, 2015
Categories : Asian Variety | Fusion | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

Singapore

A pretty cosy place to chill at during weekdays as it wasn't really crowded. Location is quite accessible, its less than 10mins walk from Lavender Mrt or Farrer Park Mrt. Co-owned by two talented chefs from Le Cordon Bleu Paris, who love to bake and explore new recipes, thus the name "Two Bakers" came about.

(1) Purple Gold Tart $7.80
- What's in it? Lavender infused chocolate ganache, caramel ganache, roasted almond bits and caramel tuile. The wedd of chocolate + caramel results in this very sweet tasting tart, best suits chocolate lovers (like me). Almond bits didn't play much part because it was too little to provide with the additional crunch or nut fragrance. Tart shell was firm but teeth still manageable.

(2) Yuzu Summer Cake $9.80
- The Yuzu lemon yogurt mousse was smooth & creamy but tasted too zesty, sourish which i prefer to be less. The matcha sponge within is redundant as matcha taste was too weak and Yuzu taste was too overwhelming.
(3) Halloween themed baked goods:

(A) Greedy Val Cake $7.0
- The chocolate cake is very soft and moist. The cake itself wasn't too sweet, sweetness only comes from the vanilla buttercream. Love the melt-in-your-mouth Rasberry coated meringue.

(B) Wicked John Cake $7.0
- The content of the Wicked John cake is exactly the same with the Greedy Val, except that it is drizzled with Rasberry glaze instead of chocolate.

(4) Halloween themed Macarons $3.50 per pc/ $12 for 4.
-Flavours are Yuzu, Rose, Matcha and Lavender Chocolate. I can honestly tell you I bought them because they looked pretty in Halloween costumes, it is the appearance that attracted me first. Taste wise, the flavours are quite distinctive and shells are crisp.

Verdict: Quite love this place because it is quiet in the afternoon and I could have proper chat with my friends without disturbance. Staff are very courteous and approachable. Taste of baked goods are definitely above average but my personal choice are their cakes. I think their cakes flare better compared to rest. Two bakers also serve coffee, snacks and other mains. I will be back smile

Wee's Family Coffee Shop Smile Oct 20, 2015

[ Wee's family coffee shop]

This coffeeshop situated at Bedok reservoir road, block 117, is drawing quite a crowd recently. Especially after a group of popular bloggers came for food tasting, food photos went viral on social media platform, their business became very good. If you intend to come on weekends, remember to make reservations first. How did they fare? Let me walk you through with the dishes me and my friends ordered.

(1) Sweet Potato Leaves with Sambal $6
- A regular dish that I would order each time I had cze char. Wee's version didn't taste oomph. The sambal chilli used lack the dried shrimps fragrance and it's not spicy too.

(2) Handmade Prawn Rolls $8
- A delicacy made up of minced pork, prawns, water chestnuts, spring onions, carrots blend together and wrapped in bean curd skin. Well marinated and deep fried to golden brown, Wee's version wasn't oily at all. I love the water chestnuts inside which gave the whole dish the extra crunch.

(3) Salted Egg Prawn Balls $16
- Are you a salted egg person? I am! I love any dish with salted egg. These prawny babes are de-shelled and fried till crispy. Clothed in golden salted egg jackets, Wee's holds the "dry" version rather than those wet gravy type. Personal preference, the amount of salted egg can be more but this signature dish here at Wee's is definitely good enough to satisfied your salted egg cravings!

(4) Mushrooms w/ bean curd $12
- Soft and silky piece of bean curd accompanied by chinese mushrooms, bunapi shimeiji and deep fried enoki. This dish didn't cause any wow factor in me but it's a decent choice to order as most of you know that consuming mushrooms can improve our body immune systems and soy is an excellent choice of protein.

(5) Prawn Paste Chicken Wings $8
- Among all the dishes we ordered, I like this prawn paste chicken wings the most. Being another highlight here, the taste of prawn paste was really strong and prominent. The skin so flavorful, crispy and meat very juicy! If we wasn't visiting so many places that day, I think I could easily conquer at least 3-4 pieces!
Verdict: A great cze char place for good food with family and friends. Prices are reasonable and food portions are good. Easy accessible and there's also ample parking within this HDB premises. I will definitely revisit to try out other dishes.

Spending per head: Approximately $12

Tiann's Bakery (甜) Smile Oct 14, 2015
Categories : Fusion | Bakery | Café

[Tiann's Bakery 甜]
A 2 weeks old "take-away" bakery along Seng Poh road. The lady boss, Tse Tiann, her concept for this bakery is healthy. Food products are all gluten free. Cakes are free from refine sugar and savoury waffles infused with chia seeds in their batter mix. Some might find their items over-priced but think of those organic, no msg nor chemical ingredients Tiann's using, it's totally worth. Suitable for people controlling their diets or with certain food allergies. Menu are yet to be fixed but will be up soonest once the gourmet head chef from London is in.
What I tried:
(1) Roasted Squash Feta Savoury Waffle $9.60 (Half)- Texture was Soft, fluffy and best of all, it's Gluten-free! Packed with Protein, definitely a Healthier choice for us! The pumpkin brings out the sweetness of the overall dish, the chia seeds & pine nuts gave it the extra crunch. Rocket amount was good, Feta cheese was too little which I wished there were more. I'm in love with this but If you love heavy stuff, then this is not for you.
(2) Mango Maple Cake $8.80- Freshly made in-house everyday. Its gluten free & refine sugar free too. This fresh cream cake tastes light, fluffy and not overly sweet. Pastry chef is also generous in the amount of fresh mango cubes added in it. If you are a Japanese pastries person, this bakery suits you.
(3) White Coffee 5oz $5- The blend is smooth, chocolatey nutty and not acidic. Tiann's bakery are using beans from The Nylon and another supplier (which I forgotten the name.. Oops). My coffee is from the latter though and I love the blend smile The barista, Fahmi, was really friendly too. He was working with Yahava previously.
Verdict: Overall experience was really good. The place was big & cosy. It was a waste though because Tiann's only do take-aways. Tse Tiann & her parents were really friendly & polite to all their customers. You'll get that "feel like home" feelings. I will come back to try other savoury waffle choices and cakes. Good news that they're also selling their homemade gelato soon! Hooray!

Seattle Pike Chowder Smile Aug 14, 2015
Categories : American | Restaurant | Chinese Soup

[Seattle Pike Chowder]
1 Marine Parade Central
Situated next to the fast food giant & marine parade food centre, is a new food joint, Seattle Pike Chowder. Together with Giovanni.L gelato, they took up a booth-like unit with alfresco concept. From far, Seattle Pike Chowder wasn't obvious because gelato took up most of the space. The whole area was very airy at night and we were greeted by friendly & courteous staff. Positive impressions right from the start.
Total of 6 types of chowders on sale. Price ranges from $8.90 small bowl to $16.90 large bowl. Bread bowls are from $12.90 onwards.
We tried 3 types out of 6. First is New England Clam chowder in a bread bowl. As told by the marketing personnel Rachel, ingredients for chowders are imported from Seattle directly. Bread bowl is locally sourced.
New England Clam Chowder Breadbowl $12.90: The broth is very thick, peppery and creamy. It is very rich in taste. Ingredients were generous, spoonful of clams and vegetable in every scoop. I do like this heavy chowder but my personal preference will be a little less salty, best to go wif the bread to reduce the saltiness.
Total 10 sourdough bread bowl were served and more than half is burnt on the outside, too dry & hard.. Bread texture on the inside is too chewy, lack of fluffiness. Timing of heating the bread gotta be fine-tuned.
Smoked Salmon Chowder followed thereafter. We were given a small portion ($9.90) to try. The chowder gives off a very nice smokey fragrance even before I could taste it. First mouthful down my throat and I'm already immersed in it.
Smokey shellfish broth, shredded salmon & lotsa potato cubes inside, it's yum to max! Cream cheese is one of the ingredients added in the broth, although not distinctive but it does help the broth to be really smooth & more creamy.
Seafood Bisque- Among all 3 dishes I've tried, this Seafood Bisque is the least impressive. The overall presentation is congee-like, clotting & not smooth. Although we were told there are cod fish, salmon, shrimps, crab meat inside the bisque but all I scooped up were tomato cubes. Tomato based broth resulting in overwhelming sourish taste, diminishing the sweetness of seafood added.
Overall experience at Seattle Pike Chowder was good, love smoked salmon chowder the most. Compared to locally found diluted chowders, these we had at Seattle Pike are so much richer in quality. One of the foodie member in our group whom just came back from Seattle 2 weeks ago, told us that this tastes exactly like the version she had in Seattle smile So I presume these authentic recipes by Seattle Pike Chowder Singapore branch will definitely attract more crowds from locals, expatriate and tourists. I will bring my friends here to try out other chowders on the menu and also the wide range of gelato by Giovanni L.
