First Peri-Peri OK Nov 13, 2010

I wonder why all the Singaporeans go mad over nando's. Seriously, whenever I pass Bugis, weekdays or not, it always has a Q at night. So that's a warning for you all! lol

Anyhow, I never tried the resto before even back in my hometown and it's always, always empty and quiet back at home, before finally closing down for good. So I never got to try.

Finally decided to try. Being a newbie, my friend and I ordered the 1/4 with 2 sidelines. I ordered the fries and Mediterranean rice with mild chicken taste and coke. Took a real while to even serve the drinks even though it wasn't a full house being lunch time.

Without asking or pestering the waiter on where's our lunch, it came like about half an hour later. Was quite tired of waiting but when it came I was a bit happy of the portion - big! I was getting hungry.

The food: Fries with the said peri-peri sauce or whatever, it has no taste, really. Not recommended. Just plain fries.

Mediterranean rice: chose over the other type of rice, because the other, said by the waiter, is cooked with spices and stuff. This rice sounds safer. Just like a bit buttery and stuff. Nothing special.

The chicken, with just-ok tenderness with the sauce was new to me, but there was nothing special about this peri-peri which everone goes mad about. Used the garlic sauce on the table and the tomato souce, The garlic was pretty spicy though! Which is a bit good to give my eyes a tug to keep me awake mad

Didn't really tickle my tastebuds or whatever the flag says. Yes its edible and its good, but I prefer 4 fingers all over than this, hands down!

The Babihong Sandwich OK Nov 13, 2010   (Related Review)

Twice in a row, couldn't get enough of the old diner. Always have preferred the old dinky diner than the bigger space because of the homey, intimate mood they give! And because it's like the original place and stuff.

This time, I ordered the Spicy Nyonya Cooked Pork sandwich (around $15, and the name is not exact). As usual, there's free cold water, self-service on the end of the table-top counter. My friends and I were chatting much, and it didn't take too long for my lunch to be served, like 10 minutes? Usually I expect more and sometimes it does happen here, take note guys, to always be understanding though, as this is not a FAST FOOD JOINT, BUT GIVING THE SLOW FOOD EXPERIENCE. So if you don't know what slow food is, check it up in Google! tongue Singapore has always expected food to be ping, ping, ping!

First time trying the meal, I wanted something spicy. So the sandwich came, in bigger portion than expected. YES! Was hungry anways lol

When I tried, I was like "hey i know this kind of cooking!" Back home my mom cooks this, it takes hours of preparation and time to slow cook it under steam, and I know it as 'babihong' with those ginger and sweet juices and stuff. Sadly, it wasn't spicy at all, like the name says.sad

Was pretty interesting to eat this as a sandwich, and the salad, again was fresh with green leafy goods and cubed tomatos. A fresh combination to the heavy pork and bread.
As long as I know they cook it with their heart, should be no problem! smile

Indeed filling!

Chop away OK Oct 23, 2010

Categories : Singaporean | Cantonese/Hong Kong | Food Court | Brunch

My uncle, aunt and I was hungry for dinner after viewing an exhibition in the Suntec Con Centre, so we headed down and straightaway made a round of views in what Republic has to offer. After a round, my uncle decided to eat from the roasted chop stall, since either we have tried the rest or some are not recommended.

So we ordered the herbal soup ($~7?), the sampler platter of the variety kinds of meat they offer, vegetable and rice.

The vegetables (~$6) was most likely covered in oyster sauce, and they added fried garlic on top so that's a pretty decent vegetable dish. The vegetables were very green too.

Now the meat platter! ($25) I don't know the variety or the correct terms for each meat, but i know there's duck roasted meat and pork, from its skin to the red sausage ones. I don't care about the name, I know only how to eat and tell the taste! tongue
Some of the meat was already cold but the taste is still there. Dip into the sweet sauce given and I'd mix it with soy sauce so the salty sweet flavor and a crunch from the pork's skin or the juicy meat of the duck is much more heavenly for a foodcourt price. Since half of them are pretty much cold so it's a bit rough and has no taste, that's why the rice is usually given the brown sauce on top.

The herbal soup is a new thing to me - so I was pleasantly surprised! smile

It's very delicious with the broth soup up until the bones of the soft pork meat inside with lotus and other chinese herbs within. I really like the sweet soup but it also has a pang of the bitterness of herbal spices but very minimal - very soothing! Like this the best lol

bowl This place is pretty good to enjoy a portion of rice and inviting friends of rice aka vegetables/meat to eat together.

Taiwan street food style OK Oct 20, 2010

Categories : Taiwanese | Restaurant | Kids-Friendly

I was hungry after a show from Esplanade with my pal so looking for a place that opens over 10PM, and Xin Wang was open with people still bustling around, so it didn't hurt to try.

Sat down, looked around the menu and the waitress taking our order couldn't speak English at all, so I was communicating only by pointing.

I chose the *chef recommendation* Chicken chop with curry sauce, and the sauce can be chosen from original/local, japanese or indian if I'm not mistaken. I chose the japanese one since it's late at night and I don't want those really thick curry! It took about 10 minutes until they served mine first, and I was surprised to have their plate long and wide, it's pretty annoying eating rice on just one side and the meat on a long way other. tongue

Taste-wise, it was normal. For a meal for about $8, this is just normal and a bit overpriced because it's a restaurant. The breaded fried chicken from Shihlin Taiwan Street Snack is way better, and you'd just have to buy a rice if you want a meal similar like this. The curry was also normal; best to add the chili powder served on the table. But I was going for something crispy so the skin was pretty crunchy smile

My friend ordered the burger which came after mine. It was small and was done a bit messily. It was a cold-served burger with egg and tuna, and it tasted normal, the bread looked like it was bought from those supermarkets though. It was small, so after tax it's about $4.

Not too recommended but it's a place that we can eat anyhow!

'Ssup-per snack OK Oct 20, 2010

Categories : Singaporean | Multi-Concept | Desserts and Cakes

This joint is on the opp. side where I reside, so them being the noisiest beancurd joint ever seen in Singapore daily from evening till midnights, there's no explanation needed.
This beancurd joint has been running from grandfather to father to son, and hence they expanded their business to other places. Mind you, the son now even drives a Rolls when coming to the place, so don't be surprised when there's such a car infront of a mere stall...mad

Aaaaaaaanyhow, back to topic, they serve the usuals:
Curry puff, filling goodness of potato and curry, so this is a snack you want to rely on when feeling not to hungry but want to munch on sth. Last time it was 80c, I think it has increased 10 or 20c more.

Red bean bun and salted bun is what you'd expect. If you get it fresh, then it's still crispy and warm, letting the sweet taste in, but don't rely too much on taste when it's been there for a while. They only smeared the red bean paste lightly so there's not too much filling... Salted bun is not too salty, so it's a good match with the sweet beancurd.

beancurd is very sweet. Back in my hometown beancurds are never sweet, it was spicy because it had the ginger sauce instead of sugar water like we get here. But tastewise it's silky and smooth! because it's sweet, so I usually pair it up eating salted bun or egg tarts!

Butterfly is sweet with a dash of sesame on top, so you get a bit of crunch with an ooze of sweetness.

Youtiao is more or less not consistent depending on is it newly fried or not. It's crunchy and has a slight hint of taste, but when it's a bit cool it's dries out leaving no taste and warmth. ask for a new one if you don't like it! (if the place is not full as well, tongue)

One more tip! I usually pair the sweet beancurd with drinking cincau (the black one) or vice versa. It tastes great and much more healthier too!
