I was walking past Prinsep Street one afternoon and I realize there's a new Chinese restaurant which pop-up along the stretch where it is well-known for bars and gamers to hangout at the nearby LAN-gaming store. My colleague and I decided to drop by to try out their dim sums since we were craving for some piping hot steam buns.

Being here for the first time, I felt the restaurant was very clean, bright and spacious but a pity it was very empty during lunch hours. I guess the office crowd must have went to dine at cheaper alternatives in the vicinity like Sunshine Plaza and Peace Center. Besides our table, only 2 other tables were spotted eating their signature dish, Black Pepper Crabs.
Siew Mai ($4.80 for 4)

I always love Siew Mai ($4.80 for 4) with my favourite mushrooms and prawn roe so we ordered a basket of it. After taking a bite in it, to my surprises, there was a shrimp in it too. The sweetness of the shrimp and mushrooms adds to the flavour of the juicy pork meat. Topped with prawn roe, it was a chewy experience popping them in my mouth. I quite enjoyed this as it has a modern touch to it. smile

I have always like Steamed Cheong Fun with Char Siew ($5.00) since I was a kid. It was quite disappointing when the dish was served because the layer of the rice flour looks dry and thick. Taking a bite into it, the char siew was tough to the bite but thankfully for the sauce, it was the saving grace for this dish and also help to add a light, savoury flavour to the cheong fun. I would have prefer the rice flour to be thinner and smoother which will be perfect!

 
How can I not have the Steamed Custard Buns ($4.20 for 3) when it is shouting to me on the menu "try me!". It came in a basket of 3 and I couldn't resist poking it with my chopstick for the custard lava to flow out. Yippeee...!! It passed my poking test! mad Coming to the taste, the custard wasn't too overwhelming and the flavour of salted egg was subtle, perfect for those with a sweet tooth. It wasn't overly oily like some other places and I thought it was decent for me. However, for those who love it rich and oozy, this might fall short of their expectation.

Overall, the food at Red House Seafood wasn't that fantastic but the service was excellent. The staffs were very attentive to welcome us to our seats and even take our orders patiently. My colleague accidentally spilled tea on the floor too and the cleaning staffs were very nice to insist "it's ok" when we tried to help. The cleaning was done quickly to avoid the tea from flowing all over. When we were walking out, all of them greeted us goodbye too.

Although the food wasn't up to my expectations, I have to say that their service was impeccable and I would visit Red House Seafood again to try their main courses.

Tucked at one quiet corner at level 1 of Far East Plaza is a hidden find for halal Thai food. Operated by a group of Malay staffs, their store name shouts amazing Thai food. The curiosity in me as well as my constant crave for Thai food led me to try their food to see if they really live up to their name.
Chicken Phad Thai ($4.50)

I ordered my favourite Thai dish, the Phad Thai (choice of Chicken or Prawns), $4.50) to take away for lunch and it was nicely packed in a styrofoam box with chilli flakes an grounded peanuts placed by the side. The portion didn't look too fantastic... to my further disappointment, the phad Thai was dry and tough and while eating, I felt they left out something, the eggs. Bean sprouts and bean curd were almost non-existent too.

To conclude, it wasn't too amazing after all but considering this is the Orchard area, prices for the food were kind of reasonable. Perhaps they have other better dishes? Well, maybe will give a try next time. Service wise, the staffs were very friendly and since all of them are Malay, it felt very homely at this cosy little eatery.

Working in the CBD and with so much work to do, queuing up or waiting for a seat at an eatery during lunch hour can be quite a dread especially in the heat of the day. Thankfully for Sumo Salad, a salad kiosk, offers quick and fuss-free meal without having to battle over seats to enjoy tasty and nutritious salad. smile

They have a variety of pre-mixed salad and there's also a choice to build your own salad from the check-list available and the staffs will fill it up to your preferred size.

I had the Medium Size Salad - $8.90 with a combination of Low-Fat Chicken Avocado Salad and Pumpkin Cous Cous which is vegetarian friendly to take away for lunch in office to avoid the crazy lunch crowd. tongue

As good as it looks, the salad was delicious yet healthy. The lean chicken breast meat wasn't tough at all and the avocado portion were very generous. The light dressing on it seems to have some lime, making it very appetizing. For the Pumpkin Cous Cous salad, the portion of cous cous tasted like olive fried rice, delicious yet not too heavy in taste.

I'm definitely heading back again to Sumo Salad again to try their other salads like Warm Thai Beef, South West Chicken and the Seafood Salad. lol

For starters, the delicious Grilled Pork with Thai Sauce ($11) makes a great appetizer as a finger food to nibble on. Accompanied by the secret Thai chilli dip made by Chef Kwang, it adds a new dimension of flavours to complement the smoky char-grilled pork slices. It was simply addictive and definitely goes well with beer as a snack too!

I am a huge fan of Green Curry Chicken ($8) and this ones has a texture just right; not too diluted or rich. With crunchy eggplant, huge slices of chicken simmered in coconut curry, it has a lovely flavour which goes very well with my bowl of white rice. Oh, huge peas were added in too and there is a minty, uplifting after-taste of the green curry which can be an acquired taste for some.

Coming to the Tom Yum Seafood Soup ($8), I love the generous amount of ingredients such as prawns, sliced fish, squid, straw mushrooms and tomatoes in it. I ordered the spiciness of level 1 chilli and the spice is pretty mild for most, leaning more to the sour side. However, it is recommended to order level 2 chilli for a good balance of flavour. I enjoyed this dish because it wasn't too oily as they did not use a lot of tom yum chilli oil.

Ending my dinner on a sweet note, the Mango Sticky Rice ($6) surely can't be missed. The mangoes are naturally sweet and when eaten with the warm, moist and sticky glutinous rice topped with coconut cream, I was in seventh heaven right away. 1 dish is definitely not enough for me and I would re-visit Baan Khun Nai for more of this!

The overall dining experience at Baan Khun Nai Authentic Thai Cuisine was a great one as I got to try the true blue flavour of dishes the way they are which reminded me of my visit to Bangkok. The service staff was very attentive to quickly refill our drinks when he saw that our glasses were running low. I have to give 2 thumbs up for this!

It is a very relax and casual environment so even if you are not here for a meal, it is a perfect place to chill over some snacks and homemade drinks like their Thai Ice Tea or Lemongrass Tea perfect for detoxification.

I have been craving for good-old Cantonese cuisine ever since I came back from Hong Kong last year. Those rustic eateries around the corner of Kowloon streets serving up delicious family recipes with Cantonese staffs shouting around is hard to find in Singapore.

However, it wasn't long that I stumbled upon Sik Wai Sing Eating House on some food blogs raving about their traditional Cantonese zi char cuisine with flavours of yesteryears.

Situated along Geylang Road, the appearance of Sik Wai Sin Eating House doesn't look appealing nor raise an eyebrow at first sight but there's more than meets the eye. It retains its rustic charm since it was established in the 50's and today, brother team Steve and Desmond has taken over the business from the old Mr Chia.

The restaurant doesn't have a physical menu so the service staff rattled away what's available for today as they only serve their signature dishes passed down from their father who upholds the standard of the food.

Didn't know what to start with first? The Watercress Pork Ribs Soup ($12) is sure a good start as the centre of any Cantonese meal must have a soup as it has been a culture to "yum tong". The post came with a huge portion of pork ribs on a mountain of watercress. It tasted like how my grandma use to prepare it and the taste of soup had a good sweetness from the watercress as long on the right amount of grease from the pork cubes. Having one bowl is certainly not enough! lol

I've never been a fan of salted fish but the Minced Pork with Salted Fish ($12) was a nice appetizer to begin the meal with. With or without a bowl of rice, the minced pork meat had a good mixture of fatty and lean portions to give it a tender and succulent texture. Flavour wise, thankfully it wasn't too salty as the salted fish slices was only a little for that hint which parents and grandparents would love.
Prawns with Tofu ($20)

Definitely one of the favourite dishes among my dining partners, the Prawns with Tofu ($20) was quickly wiped up from the dish. Huge and juicy shell-less prawns with hot and tender tofu that melts in the mouth doused with a thick layer of egg gravy, I would simply pour my rice over this dish and clean up every bit of it! The tofu is has been specially deep fried over high temperature oil so it remained crisp on the outside and smooth within. tongue

Without a doubt, the Sliced Beef with Kailan ($20) sure has a good o' "wok hei" aroma. The succulent thick beef slices wok-fried over crunchy green kailan, was mouth-watering and drool-worthy. Although the beef slices were huge, it was just right to the bite and I thought it can be more flavoursome like having some black pepper.

Probably the highlight of the night, the Song Fish Head with Bean Paste ($25) was cleansed every bit off, leaving only the bones behind. Like every Cantonese meal, the fish takes the centrepiece over a communal-style meal as every member helps themselves to the fish. Steamed to perfection, the Song Fish Head was nicely done with a good layer of bean paste, spring onions and shallots sprinkled at the top of it to remove the fishy flavour. I thought it is going to be salty but to my surprise, the bean paste complemented well with the moist and firm fish meat with the light soy based sauce.

It was a memorable night dining at such an rustic and old-fashioned Cantonese eatery which brought me back to the eatery I ate at Kowloon. The food was great if you do not mind the stuffy coffee shop style setting without any air-conditioning. The staffs, especially the boss, Mr Chia can be a little poor-tempered and start talking loudly in Cantonese. So when you're over at this family eatery, do what the loyal customers do; order and make your decisions quick, don't ask too many and just eat.

I'm sure your parents or your grandparents will enjoy the flavour so if they are craving for some good Cantonese dishes, do bring them over to Sik Wai Sin to savour the flavour of the good old times.
