Kinki Restaurant is no stranger in our local food scene given not only the interesting name but also, they are well-known for quality Japanese cuisine as well as a breath-taking view of Marina Bay!
Chirashi Set ($40)

Chirashi Set ($40)

At a Japanese restaurant, how well they treat their customers can be told from the quality of food they prepare an serve. In the simplest form, it is their sashimi. Hence, I ordered a Chirashi Set ($40) when I visited them for lunch. It is a very fulfilling set as a variety of sashimi were served on Japanese rice which is nicely done. It also comes with a side salad, miso soup, pickles and desserts too - azuki red bean in a green tea mochi ball. Yums! tongue

The selection of seafood in the Chirashi set differs day to day depending on the Chef's freshest catch of the day. Hence, diners can get to enjoy the best seasonal fishes and be wow-ed each time they order this. From prawns, salmon, tuna, herring, fish roe and a slice of tamago, I was able to savour the freshest seafood right with my bowl of rice. It goes perfectly with the freshly grated wasabi which won't leave a choking after taste unlike pre-packed tube ones.
Unagi & Hokkaido Scallop Maki ($28)

Unagi & Hokkaido Scallop Maki ($28)

Besides this, I had the Unagi & Hokkaido Scallop Maki ($28) which was sheer delight with a lightly crusted tempura. After sinking the tooth through the light crust, I was greeted with the sweet and delicious snow crab meat with avocado that's between all the goodness. Thankfully, the avocado wasn't overwhelming and I was able to enjoy the sweetness of the various seafood. This is a perfect maki for those who do not like raw fishes and of course, children will enjoy it too!

Although I was there during the busy lunch hour without any reservation, the friendly and thoughtful staff greeted us at the door and quickly cleared up a table to accommodate us. It was definitely a memorable meal at Kinki and I would be returning to the restaurant with a reservation.

My friends and I were craving for Korean food and since we were at the centre of Tanjong Pagar, we headed over to Woo Jung which is highly recommended by my Korean friends working here in Singapore.

Entering the restaurant, it doesn't seem like your usual restaurant as they only have private dining rooms which can seat up to 8 paxs which is perfect for Koreans who are known to be loud after some alcohol. It is also good for locals like us who wants some peace dining as a family or with a group of friends.
Korean Hotpot with Special Dumplings

Korean Hotpot with Special Dumplings

Like any traditional Korean restaurants, a delightful spread of banchans (side dishes) were served when seated. Although is a of a minimal charge on the menu, you can request it to be topped up according to your preference. We didn't know what to start with so we ordered a Korean Hotpot which is like ramyeong stew with lots of kimchi, tofu, vegetables and also, huge meat dumplings! It was tasty, hearty, appetizing and delicious all at the same time!
Chives Egg Pancake

Chives Egg Pancake

For side dishes, we had the Chives Egg Pancake which has a very generous portion of chives on it. Although it tasted starchy and filling after a few bites, I was told this is how the Koreans prepare it traditionally.
Acorn Jelly

Acorn Jelly

Lastly, my Korean friend ordered this, the Acorn Jelly which is a home traditional dish eaten by many during Summer. The brown cubes of jelly sure does look daunting but it has a light sweetness of acorn with some spicy sauce drizzled over it. This might be an acquired taste for some as the texture is something you have to get over mentally after a few bites of it.

Overall, it was an adventurous lunch and I truly enjoyed my meal here. The service was great too as all the staffs are Korean as they service mostly the Korean crowd. Hence, you will face some difficulty if you do not know how to communicate in Korean with them.

Tucked at a corner of Owen Road lies a quaint and cosy cafe with an interior furnished with a juxtapose of modern and old-fashioned coffee tables, chairs and couches. Entering the cafe on a weekday, I felt a total change of atmosphere, travelling back to yesteryears with old-school toys played by children of the past.

Reminiscing the interior of the cafe, I had to sip on the refreshing and citrusy Lemon Ginger Mint Tea ($5.90/pot) to relief my stress away and loose myself in wonderland. It was very fragrant and is definitely a great choice for a quick perk-me-up! lol
Big Breakfast ($14.90)

Big Breakfast ($14.90)

Filling my stomach, I had the Big Breakfast ($14.90) on their all-day breakfast menu. With your own preferred choice of egg, I had it scrambled to my liking. smile Complete with toasts, bacon, sausages, roasted potatoes and mushrooms, this is surely a feast for any hungry soul! I love how the fluffy scrambled eggs go so well with the toast and the crispy bacon. However, the mushrooms were a little dry.

Overall, the service was prompt as they refill the ice-water frequently and it was an enjoyable lunch dining at the relaxing and clean cafe with great natural lightings for food photography. smile

Categories : Taiwanese | Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

Authentic Taiwanese Dessert store at a Hawker Centre? Yup, that's right. This is not your usual Ice Kachang, Bubur Chacha or Cheng Tng store as it specializes in authentic Taiwanese and Asian desserts. The boss herself, a true blue Taiwanese claims that her recipes are all homemade from scratch and they use only the freshest and safest ingredients they can find.

After a delicious lunch at ABC Brickworks Food Centre, I couldn't resist having something cold and refreshing to perk myself up so I thought of giving this brand new dessert store a try as there were a wide selection of hot and cold desserts at a very affordable price. (move aside, Blackball!)
Caramel Osmanthus Ball, Tau Suan, Longan Soup ($2)

Caramel Osmanthus Ball, Tau Suan, Longan Soup ($2)

For the hot variety, I was recommended the Caramel Osmanthus Ball, Tau Suan, Longan Soup ($2) as it was very rare and not widely seen around in Singapore. The lady boss came out with this herself as she realize that the senior citizens love Tau Suan but the younger crowd do not like the fattening and starchy texture of it. Hence, she used longan soup that is mildly sweet and added in caramel osmanthus ball which explodes in your mouth when you sink you teeth into it! The combination of floral fragrance and caramel simply blew my mind away. shocked
Mandarin orange, Pearls, Aiyu Jelly ($2.50)

Mandarin orange, Pearls, Aiyu Jelly ($2.50)

When mangoes are overrated, have the Mandarin orange, Pearls, Aiyu Jelly ($2.50) instead! This is a cold dessert that will simply sooth your heat away with the smooth, crystal clear aiyu jelly. The lady boss cook the pearls herself to ensure the texture is soft and chewy and won't become hard when served on shaved ice. Not to mention, there were a generous serving of mandarin orange slices. It is definitely much healthier than mangoes as it they are heaty and not as high in vitamin C compared to oranges. smile
Red Beans, Yam & Sweet Potato balls, Cold Grass Jelly ($2.50)

Red Beans, Yam & Sweet Potato balls, Cold Grass Jelly ($2.50)

In another instance, didn't know what else to try at Creo Desserts and the friendly lady boss recommended me to go for their best seller, the Red Beans, Yam & Sweet Potato balls, Cold Grass Jelly ($2.50)! When I ordered this, the lady boss told me it is $2.50 and I couldn't believe my ears and ask her again. Reason why? The serving was so huge and toppings were generous! Oh gosh, this is simply so delicious and great value for money. I had a great time indulging on this especially the chewy and bouncy yam and sweet potato balls which was irresistible.

Overall, the desserts were great and the price were all so affordable! This is surely a "MUST TRY" for everyone young and old. Forget about your $3 bubble tea and head over to Creo Desserts now! tongue

Mediocre Food & Service OK Aug 22, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi | Kids-Friendly

I am never a fan of that "green frog sushi place" so whenever I crave for sushi, I'll visit Sushi Tei. Previously, I dined at their Vivocity outlet and I enjoyed myself with great food and quality service on a weekday lunch. It was however, a far cry at their China Square Central outlet when I visited it for dinner.

The restaurant wasn't very busy but the staffs seems very aloof, giving an attitude when my group of friends asked for a table for 9. They showed us to the tables but it hasn't even been clean up and told us to go back to the front counter and wait. Only 5 minutes later, we were showed to our tables again which are tucked right at 1 corner of the restaurant.

We had to seat separately because each table adjoining to the sushi conveyor belt can seat only 6 pax. Throughout the dinner, flies can be seen flying around and I wonder if tables were left unclean after diners left, resulting to it.

Anyway, there's the food I had:
Matsutake Sukiyaki ($26)

Matsutake Sukiyaki ($26)

Matsutake Sukiyaki ($16) - I thought it was decent and the beef slices were tender and juicy. The taste of the soup wasn't too sweet or salty too. It's a
Unagi Sushi ($5.20)

Unagi Sushi ($5.20)

Unagi Sushi ($5.20) - It came on the conveyor belt and the thickness of the unagi caught my attention so I grabbed a plate off and munched into it. It was not bad and I love huge and juicy unagi like this unlike other Japanese restaurants.
Oyakodon ($14)

Oyakodon ($14)

Oyakodon ($14) - I expected the eggs on it to be more runny than cooked. Although I didn't mind that, the chicken chunks were huge and tough to the bite.

Overall, my dining experience was only mediocre and nothing memorable compared to what I had at their Vivocity and Paragon outlet. I hope the service and hygiene of this branch can be rectified asap.
