Cafe in Bartley Cry Jun 08, 2016

Categories : Western Variety | Café | Pasta | Burgers and Sandwiches | Brunch

Located along Upper paya lebar road with an eye catching shop sign "Saturday House" is this cafe that sells itself as a bar and cafe. It sells mostly western food in the form of hipster cafe food but also alcoholic drinks.

Their signature menu items include sirloin steak at $22.90+ or top up 4@ for $24.90++ you get the mix grill combo of grilled chicken, sirloin steak and bacon. Other signature menu itmes are leg of lamb, grilled pork collar and chicken leg in chef's bbq sauce.

Their starters range from marmite mid-joint wings $8+ to bacon cheese mushrooms, cream cheese fries and oven baked cheese nachos.

You will notice that their shop entrance has no door, and the air con basically just goes out the main door. So it's ridiculous at how hot it can be inside the cafe. At most cafes, you would expect air conditioning, and the air conditioning here is useless. My suggestion, get one of the tables closest to the wall, where the air con unit is mounted.

1. Fried Pork Collar $8+

The fried pork collar looked amazing even though it carried no aroma of fried meat. It tasted okay, more like a typical pork katsu you would find at a japanese stall just with less meat and very thin.

It was an okay started but we quickly grew tired of it.

2. Mixed Grill Combo $24.90+

The mixed grill combo looked amazin until I sliced into the steak, which you can definitely tell was very frozen, probably a long time ago. It tasted like cardboard. I know for this price, we cannot expect much but, it was probably one of the worst steak I've tried.

The chicken was way better than the steak. The bacon was probably the only thing I even consider having a second bite of. The coleslaw and wedges were sides that we got to pick and they were okay. My suggestion, skip this.

3. Marmite Mid Joint Wings $8+

These were surprisingly good. The wings were crispy and the marmite sauce was evenly distributed on the exterior of the wings. I really liked this and would most probably get this again if I ever returned.

Overall : this place tries too hard to be a cafe or a bar. There is free parking infront of it, which is nice. There's not much to rave about the food, and the ambience is miserable, if only they could close the front door. Service was rather quick and the staff was polite.

Fried Fish Noodles Cry Jan 22, 2016

Categories : Singaporean | Hawker Centre | Chinese Soup | Brunch | Kids-Friendly

Located in the busy bukit Merah hawker centre is this fried fish noodles stall that seems to have garnered its share of loyal customers. It was my first time here and I couldn't help notice the long queues at this stall despite them selling a bowl of  fish noodles at $3.70 compared to other competitors around the hawker centre who sell the same bowl for $3.

They also sell seafood noodles, porridge and you have a choice of fried or sliced fish. Most customers seemed to had takeaway orders. Some ordering up to 5 bowls to go!

Check out the amount of fried fish! It's a mountain of fried fish to be honest!

I like my fried fish to separate from the soup so that it doesn't turn soggy. They have about 6 pieces of fried fish.

On top of the noodles they were generous with the fried omelette. Using pure oil at high temperatures and egg white you get this crispy brown, light and fluffy texture!

Next up the fish. I was so disappointed as the fish wasn't crispy or hot. It was soggy despite being dry! I should've realized when I saw that mountain of fried fish that the pieces must've been sitting outside for a long while before being served to customers. I've eaten a lot of fried fish noodles and this was literally a sad bowl of fried fish noodles.

The Ee mian tasted okay and since there's the omelette on top as garnishing, they didn't bother to provide you with an egg in the soup.

All in all, a rather disappointing meal in a hawker centre. I am confused as to why this stall had such a long queue.

Sin full experience Cry Nov 28, 2015
Categories : Café

Located slightly further from Tiong Bahru MRT and on the opposite side where the hipster region of cafes are, is SIN LEE foods. They inherited the shop name from the previous tenant who served local fare.

Once you walk in you notice that this cafe tries to distinguish itself by selling slightly unusual food. No eggs benny here!

They are famed for their chicken and waffles which is what I tried the last time I visited. I was impressed more by the salted egg fries which had me wanting to come back ever since then!

I had also previously tried their pie crust slushie which was a digestive version of an oreo milk shake. It was a memorable experience and I was hoping to see that in the menu again, but nope. It's gone, and replaced with a coconut slushie and a banana horlicks slushie.

1. Coconut Slushie $9

Made with coconut jelly and toasted coconut flakes. The coconut slushie stands pretty tall. I enjoyed the coconut jelly which was quite hard and chewy with a QQ feel. But I wish they were red rubies!

The drink was very icy for me, I felt it had more ice than anything else. Definitely nowhere as good as their pie crust slushie. This was pretty disappointing.

2. Banana Horlicks Slushie $9

Made with fresh banana, horlicks and ice cream. In an attempt to try and save my reputation of Sin Lee, I ordered another slushie in hopes that this would be somewhat closer to that magical pie crust slushie. But nope, this was diluted, all you could taste were bananas. I couldn't even taste horlicks. For $9, Sin lee, please reconsider what you are selling. Thanks.

3. Salted egg sweet potato fries $12

Twice fried sweet potato fries, house made slated duck's egg sauce with curry leaves. This tasted very different from the last one I had. The sauce itself was more diluted, and you had to struggle to try and "taste" the salted egg in your mind. The sweet potato were indeed twice fried and soggy.

4. Spam Fries $10

Thick cut fries with red aioli sauce. The spam fries were very dry but the aioli sauce was it's saving grace. I loved the sauce.

5. Beef and Grains $25

Seared marbled striploin (180gm) served pink, wet orzo rice. Fried runny egg with sweet sour ginger, furikake and scallions. The beef was very juicy and pink indeed. I loved the runny egg along with the rice. The rice was very different from the typical rice that you and I would normally consume. Atas rice is what I could call it.

All in all, I would say, this was a very depressing visit to Sin Lee. The beef and grains is probably the only dish I liked and that was alot of money. The ambience was okay. The area is so small that you can see the chef cooking!

Spending per head: Approximately $40

Located along the busy upper thomson road stretch, is Udders. It is super crowded on weekends and night time, mainly because it caters to the young crowd that never sleeps, or the crowds who have cars and can drive out here. The nearest mrt is marymount but it's a distance to walk from the mrt to Udders.

They have a watercooler, the ones you find in pri/sec/JC schools, so it's a self-service station to get water. They also serve sundaes, cooked food and drinks on top of their famed ice cream selections.

We decided to go ahead and try their shroom bites and at $7, it was kind of pricey for 4 portobello mushrooms with bacon. The mushrooms were juicy and they were good, but it does not justify the price.

They do not have waffle combos, so everything is ala carte, Waffles $4, double scoop of classic ice cream $6.80 and I got cookies and cream as well as hannah's banana which is their rendition of chunky monkey.

Hannah's banana was filled with banana creamy goodness along with chunks of bite-sized chocolate and crunchy bits. I highly recommend this to any chunky monkey lover! It was quite sweet too, sweeter than the cookies and cream!

The cookies and cream tasted decent, in comparison to typical cookies and cream, I'll have to say, Udders is more generous with their cookie bits in this ice cream.

Upsettingly though, the waffle wasn't crispy or fluffy, it was just salty and not worth your calories or $4. I was very disappointed in the waffle, despite waltzing into Udders at 12am with a huge craving for waffles, and smelling their freshly cooked waffles on their waffle iron.

On a saturday afternoon, I decided to grab lunch at Food Republic. I've heard quite a good number of reviews about the huge XL chicken or pork cutlet and decided to give it a try.

There was no queue and I got my noodles before I could even pay the auntie. The auntie at the cashier was super friendly and encouraged me to try both pork and chicken cutlet.

I guess for $6.20, it's reasonable. The noodles were good, my friens visiting from Japan couldn't get enough of it.

The chicken cutlet, was dry and very oily. The pork cutlet was very oily but at least crispy.

The saddest part is there is toast box right across from this stall selling chicken cutlet noodles and their chicken cutlet with a drizzle of cheese sauce was a lot more tender than the chicken cutlet here.

Overhyped, but at least the noodles were good.
