Really honest Swedish food Smile Jul 28, 2016

Fika Swedish Cafe has 3 outlets in Singapore. One at Beach Road, another at Millenia Walk and the first one that I visited, at One KM Mall at paya lebar. On my second visit, I went to Millenia Walk and a group of colleagues, comfortably sat down in a quiet corner of the rather spacious Fika Cafe.

The wait staff were very friendly and patient. Everytime, they came around to clear our plates. They would ask how did we find our food.

Don't forget to check out their cake display on the left the cashier. I had recently seen on their instagram (https://www.instagram.com/fikacafesg/) that they had mini princess cakes and I was also keen to try them during my first visit at One KM Mall. After the waiter came by to take our orders, I walked up to the cake display and picked 2 more cakes.

Swedish Meatballs $19.90++
These meatballs aren't like the ones you have at Ikea. There's alot more moist and subtle in flavour. The meat is tender and you can tell it's alot fresher than those frozen ones at Ikea. The cream sauce itself was sharper in flavour and smoother, almost milk-like. The cream sauce, gives you the feeling that the meat ball pretty much melts in your mouth. The potatoes were also just as delicious. They were of the consistent texture and even as a low-carb eater, I polished the potatoes off this plate!

Smoked Salmon Crepe $19.90++
The smoked salmon crepe was a delightful surprise to me. The chef pretty much stuffed as much smoked salmon as they could into the crepe. There was so much smoked salmon in here, any smoked salmon fan would rejoice! The salmon wasn't fishy in aroma or taste. There was a right amount of smokiness to the salmon and the eggy crepe's subtle flavour helped offset the strong lingering taste of the salmon. The crepe was soft, moist and pillowy in texture.

3. Toast Skagen $21.90++

Having worked in Sweden, my dad is a huge fan of Skagen, or the fresh water shrimps commonly found there. He was desperate to taste it again that he bought a frozen packet of these shrimps from IKEA but, it tasted nowhere as close to what he remembers. At Fika however, he was extremely pleased to see this and also confirmed that it tasted very close to his experiences in Stockholm. The shrimp themselves are extremely crunchy and you can taste Fika's honesty in the freshness of the ingredients they have placed on your plate. The toasted bread itself was also fresh and crunchy. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I've had skagen in both the sandwich ($21.90++) as well as the crepe ($19.90++)
One thing you cannot dismiss is how vibrantly red the fish roe is, set atop of the skagen. I would definitely get the skagen again in either the sandwich or crepe, on my future visits to FIKA.

4. Lingonberry Cheesecake $7.90++
After all the amazing main courses, the desserts were also just as amazing. The servings of the cakes were just right for sharing between 2-3pax. The lingonberry cheesecake was dense, but not overly sweet. The graham cracker crust at the bottom, wasn't too stiff for my fork to divide it. At the same time, the cheesecake texture was smooth and and melted in my mouth.

5. Princess Cake $7.90++
Another signature swedish dessert is the princess cake. Wrapped in pink fondant, is a lightly cream, followed by layers of light spongey cake. This wasn't a top favourite amongst locals, according to a staff at One KM, and I can see why. Even amongst my colleagues, no one really appreciated the pink fondant. Yes it is pure sugar, but it's so pretty! I did however enjoy the cream and the sponge cake layers.

6. Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch Mousse Cake $6.90++
This is for all you chocoholic lovers out there. A chocolately cake emphasized with a hazelnut crunchy later embedded in the bottom part of the cake, to give you a different texture in every mouthful. The middle layer of the chocolate cake was pretty mild in terms of flavour, but it carried off a pleasantly sweet chocolate fragrance. In terms of flavour, it was smooth, a bit heavy, but not too heavy and gelat to the palate.

Overall : FIKA is a very honest establishment that definitely serves up some of the most honest ingredients to the customers with friendly staff. If you have never tried swedish cuisine before and you love smoked salmon, beef balls, cakes, or just looking for a new halal eatery to checkout, do give Fika a try!

Formerly Beans Talk, Nine Fresh is a local brand in Singapore that specialises in taiwanese desserts and the name derives from jiufen (jiu = nine), a place located in Taiwan, famous for its taro balls.

The company decided to rebrand from the previous beanstalk to focus on the authenticity of the popular Taiwanese dessert. Best of all? The prices are so affordable and yet delicious!

Their toppings are :
- Made and served fresh daily
- Made without any artificial colouring or preservative
- Priced affordably so everyone can enjoy them
20 over toppings!

20 over toppings!

They are starting a huge sweep of new stalls all across Singapore. This ang mo kio stall has only been opened for 3 days! It is a hole in the wall shop, easy to miss with no dining area, but my mother managed to spot the floral opening decorations. With prices starting at $1.30 for drinks and $2 for a dessert bowl, we immediately gave them a try despite being full from lunch!

This stall is located along the busy stretch of shops leading to AMK Hub, I am sure the heavy cross flow of pedestrian traffic should be able to keep this shop alive!

1. Grass Jelly Special $2

For $2 I did not expect such a huge takeaway bowl! It was filled 3/4 with grass jelly that tasted more like guiling gao. Their jelly was denser in texture and closer to that of guilingao, it didn't break easily when you try and cut it up with a spoon.

Loved the taro balls, even though I felt like it was harder than others I've tried. I guess they could boil it for a slightly longer period?

The chewy pearls were aloe vera pearl jelly with blck sugar jelly dice milk balls and to top it all over, the taro balls. Yeap all that for just $2!

The provided milk they gave us was slightly salty and provided a nice mix of sweet and salty all in one bowl. The grass jelly itself was the sweetest in the mix, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I cannot wait to try their other signatures!
Supplementary Information:
ANG MO KIO outlet is giving away a free topping each day until Nov 10!

Rainbow Cottage Cafe is a place that brighten up anyone's day! Their decor is colourful and makes you feel like you're up in the clouds right next to the rainbow! Their cakes are also very cute, colourful and they all look so delicious and tempting to order them all!

I came in a very large group of 10pax and the owner Jason was very accomodating and frequently called me up to confirm the party size and checked on what we were planning to order. This was to ensure that he had enough food prepared for my party of 10. Great cafe planning in my humble opinion! This is the first cafe to give me so much attention before I even step into the cafe! *applause*

1. Haiwaiian Pizza $13.50

I started off the meal with a very familiar pizza, I didn't enjoy it so much the last time, and now, it has a stronger cheese factor! The base of the pizza crust is still disappointing but taking that aside, the ingredients tasted great and everyone loved the pizza.

2. Baked pasta with Beef/Chicken $8.90 *Highly recommended*

There's something about Rainbow Cottage Cafe and their pasta sauces, it is very addictive! Their beef or chicken baked pasta was so good, it disappeared almost immediately! For those who can't take beef, the chicken is very tasty and makes a perfect meal. For those who can take beef, just go for it! The beef lasagne has a stronger flavour and the beef is mouth-watering! The fragrance from the sauce is very memorable, and I would definitely order this again!

3. Baked Pasta with Mushroom $8.90

For the non-tomato base people, there's the pasta with mushroom sauce, this sauce is alot milder in flavours compared to the tomato base. You can still taste the mushroom but just a tinge of it. The mushrooms used here seem to be thinly sliced but still juicy in every bite!

4. Baked Rice $8.90

This seemed to be more of a baked risotto as the rice was very soft and even a baby without teeth could enjoy this main course! Some of my friends couldn't stop exclaiming in excitement as they dug into this, as this is probably the most unique experience I've had with baked rice. Usually in baked rice, the top layer of hardened cheese covers a bowl of plain white rice, but not here at Rainbow Cottage. Their rice is seasoned well and even a small mouthful of the rice is very tasty!

5. Baked Lasagne with Chicken $8.90 *Highly recommended*
Chicken lasagne was good, but if you can take beef, just order the beef!

Chicken lasagne was good, but if you can take beef, just order the beef!

In Singapore, I think we generally see more spaghetti more than lasagne, so *applause* to Rainbow Cottage for offering, macaroni, spaghetti AND lasagne. The sauce here is similar to the one with the baked pasta but there seems to be more minced chicken embedded in the layers of lasagne. Again, the chicken is very tasty, but for those who can consume beef, just go for the beef option, it has more flavours!

6. Baked Lasagne with Beef $8.90 *Highly recommended*
The beef lasagne is a winner!!!

The beef lasagne is a winner!!!

Personally, after trying all their available main courses except the vegetarian pasta and wraps, this is my personal number 1 at Rainbow Cottage! The sauce was executed perfectly, it's not too salty and you can still taste the tomato and beef distinctively in every spoonful. The lasagne was cooked to perfection, the texture was on point!

Everyone couldn't stop raving about the beef/chicken pasta/lasagne!

7. Beef/Chicken Spaghetti $8.90
A bit watery, but there was enough taste :)

A bit watery, but there was enough taste :)

The sauces here seemed to be a slightly more watered down version of the sauce served with the baked pasta or lasagne, but still enjoyable for any spaghetti fan out there. The noodles were al dente and the portion was just right.

8. Mushroom Spaghetti $8.90
It wasn't too creamy :) and it was well executed

It wasn't too creamy :) and it was well executed

Not that this was my least favourite, but there were tons of good dishes served to us and I think this didn't seem to "wow" me. My friends who weren't fans of cream based sauces told me that they loved this. I felt it was a so-so dish, even as a mushroom lover, I would rather go with the baked mushroom pasta instead of this.
Good spread of food!

9. Assorted Gelatos $3.50 per scoop
Soooo good!!

Soooo good!!

Rainbow Cottage Cafe has an array of homemade gelatos, their Bubble gum coloured cotton candy gelato (*Highly Recommended*) is so yummy! It reminds you of your childhood days eatin bubble gum and it is not too sweet either. Actually, all their gelato isn't too sweet.

The raspberry gelato was the most sour of the flavours we picked, but it was still delicious and smooth. But beware, do not mix it with other flavours, it might not benefit the other sweeter flavoured gelatos.

The cheesecake gelato was nice, it was a very dense and creamy cheesecake in a gelato form. It did take my friends awhile to guess what flavour it was though, but everyone still enjoyed it!

10. Matcha lava cake with Tiramisu gelato $6.50 + $3.50

I'm not a huge fan of lava cakes but I am a huge fan of this matcha lava cake! The matcha flavour is strong and the cake is moist and the lava was milky and again, had strong matcha flavour. Paired with a scoop of Tiramisu gelato, it was a one way trip to heaven. Best of both worlds, in my humble opinion. I'm sorry chocolate lava cakes, you guys are outdated, the new thing is matcha everything! Both inside and outside!
Best lava cake ever!

Best lava cake ever!

Watch the liquid gold of matcha milky goodness flow out!!!

11. Dark chocolate cake with duo chocolate gelato $5.50 + $3.50
Perfect combination

Perfect combination

I had massive chocolate fans dining with me that day, so I decided to surprise them witha  dark chocolate cake and chocolate gelato. The chocolate cake was slightly on a drier side but mixed with the chocolate gelato it was sweet and enjoyable.

12. Waffle with marshmallows $ 4.50
A slightly salty waffle with marshmallows :)

A slightly salty waffle with marshmallows :)

Rainbow Cottage Cafe seems to be selling lots of waffles, everywhere I turn, every table seems to be order waffles with ice cream or just plain waffles. I got waffles with marshmallows and the waffles were slightly salty, I guess they expect you to order ice crema with the waffle, which is understandable. The waffle plate was cutely decorated with little chocolate and honey syrup to make it look like clouds maybe?

All in all, a very enjoyable experience for everyone and everyone had a full and happy tummy. Service was also excellent and the food came out in a timely manner. The owner Jason was also super friendly and accomodating to our every needs.

I'm back again for more waffle and ice cream! Plain waffles starting from just 80 cents! So for a waffle with 2 scoops of ice cream, it costs $2.80. Each scoop of ice cream, sets you back $1.

The staff are so generous when it comes to scooping the ice cream.
Huge ice cream balls with crispy waffle

Huge ice cream balls with crispy waffle

Look at how huge the ice cream scoops are. My friend was stunned when she saw the huge ice cream scoop and when she learnt how much it cost. The waffle was crispy but after awhile as the ice cream melts on it, the waffle no longer stays crispy. So the trick is to eat it fast!

You can see that the ice cream is already melting in this picture as I started to cut into the waffle. The waffle was piping hot when it was first peeled off the waffle iron, so the ice cream melts so quickly over it.

Cookies n cream and chocolate chip ice cream were a good mix for the waffle. Although the chocolate chip ice cream was less sweet than the cookies n cream. I would re-pick my choice of peppermint chip ice cream again, as I felt that it was a good mix for the waffle.

Located at the edge of South Canteen is this each-a-cup that has been here for over 10 years! Order on the left counter and collect your drink on the right counter.

Here is what I normally order, Sunrise, which is a yogurt ice blended drink.

I guess they still have a Merry Christmas cup plastic cover, even though Christmas was just 2 weeks ago. This is a full fledge each-a-cup even though it is inside a institution.
A refreshing drink

A refreshing drink

Waited not even 2 minutes and my drink was ready. Very efficient staff who churn out drinks quickly! I had just walked 10 minutes from Ang Mo Kio Hub to this place and I was very hot and tired. This was a very refreshing drink. With the first sip, I knew that I had made the right choice. The best thing about chocolate sunrise is that it is not very sweet. Even though you do not get to pick a sugar level. You can try and taste it, it is not sweet at all. But the jelly bits adds sweetness to the drink.

I did get a brain freeze by drinking it too quickly. But all in all, a great way to spend $1.70
