shiokness x2 Smile Oct 06, 2013

we weren't intending to order both the shiok makis, but there was a mix up in our order and so that was what we ended up with -.- but i guess it's a good thing too, since it'll allow me to compare both! not that i could decide which was better though. i was too busy reveling in the explosion of flavours in my mouth that gave me fireworks in my head *.* sooooo delicious *slurps* lol i was really super satisfied after that. *pats tummy* and i was really pleasantly surprised that i didn't feel SUPER full after that, despite all the rice i ate! we had 8 pieces of maki each!

so generation 1 ($16.80) was a combination of charcoal grilled eel wrapped in a lightly roasted salmon. #1 thing i LOVE about shiok maki is the sauce. the abundance of it! and its creaminess and yumminess and everything about it that makes me just want to mop it up with anything on the plate. i even ate the ginger (which i usually don't) because i just wanted to dip it in the sauce. sinful? probably. but i couldn't care less. for me, what stood out about the gen 1 shiok maki was the lovely aroma of the grill that emanated from the sushi and caressed my taste buds. it was sooo delicious, a total mouthgasm experience ^^ i could only squeal with happiness throughout the whole meal haha.

for generation 2 ($16.80), it was a crispy prawn wrapped with lightly roasted salmon. what was different about this maki, besides the ingredients, was its sauce! it has a tinge of sweetness, that kinda melts on your tongue as you savour it in your mouth. i didn't want to swallow my maki. it was SO.GOOD. haha i wanted it to stay in my mouth forever as i basked in the joy of eating it smile)) haha. this totally doesn't really sound like food anymore right? i've heard reviews about its quality deteriorating, but now, typing this, im just relishing the memory of the shiokness again and i couldn't wish for more :')

i'm definitely going to come back again!! to try the crappy maki which we originally ordered and never received -.- their service staff seem a little blur... O.o after we asked for they bill, they delivered another plate of sushi to us and we were like "huh??!!" haha. i would have gladly taken it if it was free tongue teehee. but yep will come back for the crappy maki ;) and maybe the pitan maki since i heard it was good too?

my absolute favourite dish at this restaurant is the fresh beancurd with pork floss and sauce ($7). The tofu is silky smooth and chilled just nicely, and the sauce is SUPER TASTY! you don't have to worry about this dish (or any of the dishes in this restaurant for that matter) being plain, because the sauce is ultra rich with flavour, thick and oozy. oh gosh. it's lovely! and of course the pork floss adds a nice touch to this already perfect dish (:

the fried chicken with sesame oil and sauce ($9) is another favourite of ours at this restaurant. the sesame oil adds a wonderful fragrance to this dish, and i love pouring the sauce into my porridge (:

since it is created to be paired with porridge, the friend kangkong with chili & belachan ($7) here is especially potent! now, i love chili, and i would say i have a pretty good tolerance for it, but this is HOT! haha, i love it! (: it gives a really solid kick, but pair it with the porridge because it's really spicy (:

all the dishes in this restaurant have robust flavours that go well with a simple bowl of porridge. and the piece of sweet potato in the porridge tops it off wonderfully.

this is actually the first time i'm trying the chinese pancake with red bean paste ($10) at this restaurant! i got a shock when the plate arrived on our table - it was pretty huge! shocked i was slightly worried about finishing it (after all, it was only 3 of us dining), but i needn't have. it was absolutely delicious, we polished it off easily! lol the crust was flaky and crispy, and there was a generous amount of red bean paste in every piece. this has to be one of the best red bean paste pancakes i've ever eaten! lol

.com/ (:

finally i visited taste paradise for dim sum!!!!! (: i've heard about it a looooong time ago, but it's really difficult to get a reservation there! sad i called quite a number of times, but it was always full. finally this time i could get a reservation, but they only gave me two available timings 11am and 2pm. omg. oh well, for good food! (:

i have to start with my char siew sou ($3.90 for 3) first because it was the best thing i tried that day. it was really really really nice. i'm not kidding you. yes, i am a fan of char siew sou, so it would most likely taste good to me, but this one was really special. the pastry was absolutely delicious! it was slightly sweet, and crumbly just-so that it fell apart in my mouth. the charsiew inside was coated with the wonderful sweet sauce which was absolutely lovely. ohmyyyy! really, you HAVE TO TRY IT. it's the best char siew sou i've ever eaten.

most of the dishes we ordered were actually pretty much the usual fare. like chee cheong fun with char siew ($4.80). but there were also variations on this, one of which i found quite interesting was the scallop version ($5.50). and i also liked the wok fried cheong fun with XO chili sauce ($5.80, see picture below)! it was fragrant, infused with the XO sauce (:

mostly ate the usual har gow ($4.80 for 4), siew mai ($4.80 for 4) and char siew bao ($3.90 for 3) which were pretty standard. the egg tart ($3.60 for 3), unlike the char siew sou, was nothing to shout about.

the steamed shanghai pork dumpling with foie gras ($7.80) was something different which we tried though! i thought it was pretty interesting (:

the pan-fried pumpkin pastry ($3.20 for 3) was pretty yummy as well. crispy on the outside, spongy inside, with a nice smooth pumpkin paste in it.

i read about taste paradise having really awesome custard buns, but why did i not see it on the menu?!?!?!??! sad aww!

and we couldn't leave the place without dessert! not when there were so many nice-sounding goodies on the menu! i say 'nice-sounding' cos i was disappointed with my dessert sad sighhhhh. they should really have some sort of description in their menu sad bleargh. i guess it's just me. but in case you're like me and hate the taste of almond jelly, DO NOT order the steamed mashed taro served in young coconut ($8.50). it sounded absolutely delectable, and looked gorgeous. but the moment i popped a spoon of it into my mouth, i nearly spat it out because of the almond taste. YUCK sad it's actually oh nee, which i like. but why why why did they did to add in the almond. this is what i call 'complete redundancy' -.- they just destroyed a perfectly wonderful dessert! sad so anyway, bottomline is, if you like almond, by all means, order it. if you're like me, stay FAR away. :

good buffet Smile Oct 06, 2013

haven't been to a buffet in quite awhile! i enjoyed the one here (: seems pretty popular! i was so excited when i saw this cheese platter!!! lol i love cheese! although i have no idea what are the kinds of cheeses i ate that day cos they weren't labelled xP i think there was cheddar, i recognise the taste! lol there was also some really nice garlic cream cheese yumyum! a very subtle garlic flavour that gave the cheese such an interesting flavour. and i loved the biscuits that came with it as well. ritz!!!!! and the plain crackers complemented the cheeses perfectly!

there was a wide variety of vegetables for the salad, plus a whole range of toppings! i love croutons and pine nuts! lol and there were some sauces for dressing as well (:

i managed to take a beautiful picture of a whole baked salmon, but i never got the chance to try it!!!! sad it came with a lovely creamy sauce on the side as well. it was snapped up really quickly though, which is why i didn't get to try it sad sighhhh. but it tasted good according to those who ate it (:

the seafood station does not have such a wide variety as other buffets, but it was fine for me, since i'm not much of a seafood-person tongue i think scallops are quite nice though! with the lime sauce (: and of course sashimi!!!!!!!! i remember the salmon sashimi here is really interesting! it has a much firmer bite as compared to the salmon sashimi i normally eat. i always feel that salmon sashimi is always too slippery? but this one was a bit crunchier (?) which i liked. instead the tuna was less crunchy than normal, but still nice anyway!

now for the main courses! this was what we had (i'm inventing names cos i really can't remember what they were called!)

1. baked tomato salad - quite a regular tasting dish. the cherry tomatoes were baked till they became slightly soft and were tossed with other veggies and dressing

2. mussels! i didn't try this. but it looked pretty good

3. beef stew/stroganoff: the beef was nice and tender and the sauce was tasty, nice dish!

4. bread and yam & pumpkin pudding, something like that. i really liked this dish!! ;D it was creamy and rich (don't take to huge a serving), food for the soul (:

5. duck with apple sauce: i thought the sauce was pretty interesting!

6. pineapple fried rice: this was cold!! if not i think it would have tasted better. it was quite fragrant though! (:

7. stir fried kailan: just a normal veggie dish.

8. chicken in oyster sauce: this was quite a homely dish which i liked (:

9. mushrooms! i liked this healthy simple dish of stir fried mushrooms

and each guest is entitled to a complimentary cheesy lobster! omgosh! i never thought that i would ever like something like this. i hardly even eat lobster. but anyway, it was LOVELY. the lobster was baked till the meat was tender, and infused with the yummy gooey melted cheese, it was heavenly lol

and now we move on to desserts. it's always such a pity that i'm full to bursting by the time it comes to dessert, so even though i want to try everything, i often can't. and anyway, even if i do, i'm sometimes unable to enjoy it properly. sighs. but it's just so nice looking at it, yes? lol so many things to chose for the chocolate fondue! there is just something about chocolate fondue that is so awesome. somehow i always feel that the chocolate tastes nicer! lol so i'll just stick something in and drip the chocolate all over my other desserts so that i'll get to enjoy more chocolate. omg heaven!!!! lol anyways, i tried the macroons and i conclude that they always look much nicer than they taste. don't they look soooo pretty? (: (: but the taste is just, sugary sweet. nothing really special i think.

there was a crepes station!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and the waiter at the crepes station was really nice too (: cos i was one of the first few to order, i didn't have to stand there and wait, instead he served it to my table. hehe, it's good to be ahead of the crowd ;) there are quite a few flavours to chose from and you can mix! mine was peanut butter and strawberry jam. *drooooools* haha lol the crepe was paper-thin and nice and crispy! lol awesome (:

and there were so many cakes/tarts to chose from! none that was particularly outstanding though, so i didn't have much of an impression.

overall, a nice nice buffet! xD

fries could be better OK Oct 06, 2013

.com (:

they have a set which includes a burger, your choice of fries and drink for $9.90. since the place is called 'everything with fries' you wouldn't expect them to have just one type of fries right?! so....there are five different varieties of fries to chose from! lol original, curry, salt & vinegar, garlic and sour cream & onion.

i ordered the char shu burger (i think!! shucks i can't remember the name. price on its own is $7.90) and sour cream & onion fries. oh yes, the meal comes with coleslaw as well. quite a pathetic amount though. but the amount of fries was overwhelming. it took up more than half my tray! i didn't exactly find it very spectacular. i would have preferred if the taste was more infused into the fries. because i think they just sprinkle the flavouring on top, it doesn't really stick to the fries and so some fries don't really taste the way they should? i would say that they pale greatly in comparison with sour cream & onion pringles! :/ poor imitation... but the burger was not bad! i liked the soft bun which was tasty on its own. the meat was fairly tender, especially the parts near the fatty area.

the garlic fries were slightly tastier. but overall i felt that, considering the name of this place is EwF, the fries should be way better. lots of room for improvement!
