walking down the length of shops along clarke quay, there are an abundance of restaurants to chose from for dinner! virtually all types of cuisines are present, right down to turkish cuisine, in the form of turkish ice cream haha. tongue if you walk right down to the end of the row, without being lured by all the other eating outlets along the way, you'll reach peony jade, which is famous for its cantonese cuisine (& mooncakes!!). it's menu of seafood was extensive, but we didn't order any of it tongue i thought the picture of one lobster dish looked exceptionally enticing, but it was really expensive O.O

i was slightly hesitant when my mum suggested ordering the braised dried seafood with pumpkin soup ($32 small), preferring to opt for the safer choice of hot & sour soup. but then again, it's always good to have a stomach open to new food right? so i went along with her choice, and my, i was pleasantly surprised! the soup was very flavourful, having been boiled with seafood like prawns, scallop and fish. slightly sweet from the pumpkin, it also tasted very much like sharks' fin soup! shocked haha. YAY lol it was great to slurp down that bowl of tasty soup for the soul, knowing that we weren't killing any sharks in the process ;)

the pan-fried eggplant with hot garlic sauce and fish fillet ($18 small) came in a sizzling hot pot. the eggplant was fried till it was slightly crispy, but after being boiled with the sauce, it was wonderfully soft at the same time. such a perfect combination. the sauce was tomato-based, inviting comments like 'why does it taste like tomato ketchup??' well, it did, to a certain extent. but definitely a tastier version. uhh, one thing though, we couldn't find the fish fillet anywhere inside?

there were so many yummy dishes that day! but if i had to pick a favourite, it would be the braised homemade beancurd with golden mushrooms and dried scallops ($18 small). fried to a light crisp, each piece of beancurd was nicely cut into portions for easier eating. the sauce was lightly flavoured, and the beautiful golden mushrooms complemented the beancurd wonderfully.

the 'jing du' style pork spare ribs ($20 small) were slathered with a generous amount of sauce, just the way i like it lol the sauce was sweet and slightly sour and the ribs were tender and meaty. so yummy (:

by this point, we were really quite full already! the small portions turned out to be not-so-small after all. but the food was just so delicious that we kept going for more. somehow we managed to sweep the entire table (: and oh oh! the appetizer was really nice too!!!!!! i can't remember where i had a similar appetizer, i think it could have been at taste paradise. it was a handful of a variety of nuts coated with a glaze and covered with sesame seeds. absolutely DELICIOUS. lol anyway, the next dish we had was roasted crispy free-range chicken with szechuan hot sesame sauce ($30 half chicken). as promised, the chicken skin was nicely crispy, but the sauce was uhh, either non-existent, or just not spicy at all. i found that it was mostly a flavouring which they scattered over the top of the chicken. it was really tasty though! a mix of garlic, sesame and i dunno what else. but it was really really yummy.

and of course, one of my favourite chinese desserts. actually, when we were browsing the menu before we decided to enter the restaurant, the pan fried szechuan pancake with red bean paste ($12) was the dish that sealed the dish for me tongue heehee. and it didn't disappoint lol beautifully crispy, with a fairly generous amount of paste. the only thing was it seemed to be dousha rather than red bean? they're different, right?? but it was nice anyway lol

.com (:

as always, when i see nachos, I HAVE TO ORDER THEM lol heehee. the chili cheese nachos ($16.80) looked rather disappointing when they first arrived. i mean, the colour didn't look very appetizing somehow. they looked kinda pale! but they tasted surprisingly good! lol they were not all crispy, in fact, quite a number of them were a bit soggy, but it was cos they were drenched in sauce which i looooooved (: i really liked the taste of the beans! normally i don't like the beans they serve in spanish restaurants and stuff, but this time they tasted really nice, and the jalepenos added a wonderful kick to this dish (: slightly sour and spicy, they were really yummy! but i don't understand why people say jalepenos are the spiciest kind of chili!! O.O so far all those which i've tried are not really spicy. definitely not the level of chili padi. but anyway, i like lol

the other appetizer we ordered was the mozarella sticks ($9.80). a crispy layer of golden breadcrumbs on the outside with cheese oozing out with every bit, ooh gosh lol they tasted great on their own, and with the salsa dip as well! (:

i had a difficult time trying to decide between the fiesta lime chicken and the margherita grilled chicken, cos i thought both pictures looked scrumptious! lol in the end, we chose the margherita grilled chicken ($22.80), which turned out to be...not so outstanding. the chicken was a tad dry. but the sauce was pretty interesting, i liked the freshness which the tomatoes added to the dish (:

the applebee's honey bbq double-glazed babyback ribs ($29.80) were quite nice! generously covered with a layer of smoky bbq sauce and the meat was tender (although not the falling-off-the-bone texture which is the epitome of all ribs lol but still decent!).

and we drank sangria! lol hmm somehow i always had the impression that sangria was really alcoholic. like from my past experiences of drinking it. but for those at applebee's, it tasted almost like fruit juice? haha! there was almost no hint of alcohol at all. but they tasted really yummy! (: (: we ordered the kiwi-melon sangria which was really refreshing! i loved the taste of the kiwi lol and the white peach sangria as well! initially i liked the peach sangria more. but after drinking it for awhile, i actually preferred the kiwi-melon sangria for its lighter, fruiter taste (: the peach one was slightly too sweet after awhile. the best thing? they were going at 1-for-1 haha. the original price was $19.90 each, which is exxxx :/

yippee! one down from my ice cream list! lol i finally tried udders! (: damn happy. haha. plus, it's free lol lol cos i had a voucher. soooo yummy (:

and the best part is that they're always churning out new flavours which just makes the experience of choosing much more fun! lol i'm always spoilt for choice, and i take forever contemplating which flavour to buy in the end. omg. i tried three flavours - bailey's & bourbon, gila melaka and italiano pistachio - before finally deciding on gila melaka.

haha in any case, all of them were lovely (: OMG I WANNA WORK IN AN ICE CREAM PARLOUR!!!!!! the italiano pistachio was supposed to be made from premium italian pistachios, and it had a wonderfully robust nutty flavour which was really delicious. the reason why i didn't order the bailey's & bourbon (ugh regret!!!!!!) was because i felt that the taste of bourbon completely overwhelmed the bailey's. i couldn't taste the bailey's at all! which made me slightly disappointed which was why i didn't order it. but the taste of the bourbon was infused wonderfully into the ice cream, which was good. the gila melaka really tasted quite authentic!! haha yummy! i love the taste. it was pretty sweet though, NEARLY overwhelmingly so, but thankfully not to that extent, which is good (: ohoh! and there was attap chee inside too! interesting ;) the green tea flavour which ngan ordered was nice too! subtly sweet, just the way i love it lol

it's really about time that i started exploring all the foodie places around upper thomson. there are new outlets sprouting up around this place all the time! lol how eggciting xD old school delights is this really adorable little cafe that is super, well, old school! haha. there are blackboards all around, old school goodies like those icing biscuits (you know?) and even toy boxes with games like five stones! haha so cute (: and you order your food by writing it on a little whiteboard which they provide at each table! haha fun!!

their food is quite affordable, and really yummy!!! lol or maybe i was just starving then, but i really enjoyed it (: the hainanese chicken cutlet ($8.90) was wonderfully crispy with a light airy crust encasing juicy chunks of chicken pieces and covered with OSD's homemade zesty sweet & sour sauce. the fried rice that came with it was nice and eggy too (: yummm!

my friends wanted to order the home-style curry chicken ($8.90) which sounded really delicious! unfortunately it was sold out sad i guess that is testimony to its popularity! ;) so instead they ordered the old school heritage mee siam ($5.20). this was another yummy dish (i must say ALL the dishes we had were really fragrant!! lol). the blend of 11 fresh grounded spices lent an awesome flavour to the sauce.

and i definitely have to rave about my nasi lemak besar ($7.20). omgosh. the moment i put a spoon of that rice into my mouth, i was sold. the burst of aroma from the pandan and coconut in my mouth was amazingly awesome! i haven't eaten such fragrant nasi lemak rice in a really long time. and the amount of dishes accompanying it is pretty generous. a chicken wing, slice of omelette, ikan bilis & peanuts and otah. plus a huge dollop of homemade sambal chili that was oh-so-delicious! this is definitely one awesome meal lol whee! and they were really nice, allowing us to make changes to the dish. like my friend, who didn't want otah, managed to change it for ANOTHER CHICKEN WING at the same price! wow. haha actually i don't know which one is worth more, but it's nice that they let her change it (:

my friend also ordered the OSD signature pulut ($2.20) which is glutinous rice with a filling of savoury-sweet hae bee hiam (dried shrimps). it came rolled up in a leaf, and when we smelled it, we nearly got blown away! haha. the smell of the hae bee hiam was just totally mind-blowingly awesome. the combination of sticky rice and crunchy dried shrimps was just delicious lol

after all that food, we were really quite full already. but we had spotted the sticky chewy chocolate fudge cake ($5.50) when we first entered and we absolutely could not resist it!!! i have to say that it looked nicer as a whole cake because we could really see the layer of thick gooey fudge on top of the cake. somehow it seemed to be absent in this slice. but it was nice and chocolately, with spongey cake layered with the sticky chewy chocolate.

the banana cake ($4.20) was again super duper fragrant. every bite was infused with the flavour of the banana, im pretty sure it was REAL bananas and not just the essence. absolutely delicious!

pretty good vietnamese food! Smile Oct 06, 2013

.com/ (:

we were really starving by the time we reached the restaurant, so everything on the menu looked good! lol and tasted good (okay it was REALLY good, not just because we were hungry k). the entire restaurant is run by vietnamese people, so i would suppose that aside from the lack of authentic ingredients which can't be helped, the food was goooooood! (: the fresh vietnamese spring rolls ($8 for four) were refreshingly tasty, and came with an interesting peanut paste sauce with chopped peanuts. the combination was one which i've never tried before and is pretty interesting!

the other appetizer we got was the green papaya salad with prawn and pork ($10) which is really two thumbs up! lol i loved the slightly raw papaya strips with the fresh prawns and other veggies, and the sweet chili sauce went perfectly with this dish.

there was a whole variety of noodles to chose from in this restaurant! i ate the sliced beef and beef ball ($11) noodle, a traditional favourite xD the soup here is especially fragrant, i would say its the closest i've gotten so far to the pho i had in vietnam (: i love how vietnamese soup is not just savoury, but also slightly sweet, such a nice twist to an otherwise potentially bland dish. and the rice noodles were slurpily smooth heehee. nice! full-bodied and flavourful lol

the sliced beef glass noodle ($11) is basically the glass noodle version of mine. haha actually it's pretty similar! i enjoyed a bit of the glass noodle as well cos there were a few strands in my bowl heehee xD

the special vietnamese kuay teow with prawn and pork ($11) was slightly different from ours! as in the soup was different. i don't really know how to describe it. it was nice as well, but not the typical pho kind of soup.

deviating from the norm of choosing noodles, my sis got the rice with special marinated chicken ($12). i didn't try the chicken, but the rice was pretty fragrant (:

the drinks were nice too! (: i loved the soursop fruit shake ($3.50)!!! lol awesome stuff. it was chock full of the fruit and tasted wonderful.
