Pasta Fresca Da Salvatore Review OK Jan 03, 2016
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Italian | Restaurant | Pasta

Pasta Fresca Da Salvatore prides itself in using sauces and ingredients from South Italian recipes. They boast of recreating authentic, crispy Italian thin-crust pizzas in Singapore. We were disappointed to find that the restaurant was still closed at 10.30am...
Interior of the restaurant

Interior of the restaurant

We waited about an hour before the chef arrived. Thankfully, there is free parking! You have to call any one of the restaurants before you're allowed to enter the gantry. It was quite strange that the waiter asked us to wait outdoors. Despite the blazing weather, they did not allow us into the restaurant even though they were not setting tables or doing anything in particular.

Crespelle Al Funghi (W)
Creamy... thick... buttery

Creamy... thick... buttery

Before you read any further, you should know that there are 16 pastas to choose from in the restaurant. We ordered crespelle al fungi, an italian-style crepe filled with a delightful, creamy sauce of sautéed porcini and white mushrooms, onions, parmesan cheese. The dish is baked in the oven and you get to choose between tomato or cream sauce. Of course, my foodie partner-in-crime chose the latter. He is addicted to anything creamy and buttery... and unfortunately, I'm not really a fan. *laughs*

Crespelle Al Funghi in the menu (left). The Real Al Funghi served to us (right).

Well, there is a stark difference in terms of the look of the Crespelle Al Funghi. I must say the dish looks really, really terrible and it is probably an insult to italian dishes.

Is this really Crespelle Al Funghi?

We couldn't differentiate the different layers. Initially, it tasted great but it was quite cloying halfway through! Definitely too creamy for our liking!

Fettucine Chicken & Mushroom Alfredo

We got this item from SUGAR, the mobile app. This fresh fettucine pasta is tossed with Parmesan cheese, diced chicken, and sautéed mushrooms. This thick and creamy pasta is best shared among two — its buttery fragrance is bound to permeate your nostrils. The fettucine is much preferred as compared to the Crespelle!

Service was average — there were only one waiter and waitress around and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Perhaps I expected too much— I'm quite unsure if these dishes are worth the prices as my mum is able to cook these at a similar standard.

Supplementary Information:
We used SUGAR the mobile app for this place! SUGAR helps you explore your city without following the usual ratings and reviews. They seek out sweet places, make it local and provide daily incentives for you to try somewhere new.

Recommended Dish(es):  Fettucine Chicken & Mushroom Alfredo

Project ACAI review Smile Jan 02, 2016
Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

I've never heard of the acai berry before until I've visited Project ACAI. The açaí berry grows wild atop palm trees native to the Amazon rainforest. It is as tiny as a small grape, with only 10 to 15% edible fruit. However, the health benefits from this Brazilian fruit is extraordinary. The fruit pulp is richer in antioxidants compared to strawberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries and practically, all the berries on earth.

The decor in Project ACAI is largely industrial minimalist — brightly glowing light bulbs hang loose from the ceiling. There is a wide counter table covering about 50% of the store, decorated with pineapples, ripe and unripe bananas and dragon fruits and more. Be warned — don't sit near the glaring refrigerator located near the door or risk walking out with dizziness!

How to order in Project ACAI:

1. Let the cafe server know the size of acai bowl you want from the menu
2. Add extra toppings if you wish to
3. Collect the restaurant pager from the staff. Find a seat.
4. When the restaurant pager starts beeping, collect your order from the staff.

I wish cafes do away with plastic cups. It really cheapens the entire look and it's a great evil for the environment.

"Where My Chocolate Abs?" is a cup of organic acai blended with swedish chocolate oat milk, mushy bananas, creamy nut butter and semi-sweet raw cacao bits. It's really refreshing, and works so much better than a cuppa of hot chocolate in the sultry weather of Singapore.

Original Flower Bowl (Large) — S$13.50

I brought my family of four to share the flower bowl. Made up of blended acai base, the flower bowl is topped with granola, fresh fruits, blueberries and super foods such as bee pollen, cacao nibs, coconut shavings, chia seeds and goji berries.

ACAI Bowl

It actually takes a lot of manpower to decorate the bowls. Besides cutting the fruits, the cafe servers have to ensure an appropriate and equal amount is given to each customer.

Thanks to the girls who served us!

On a side note, I think I would feel better if they wore hats/caps or masks as they are dealing with uncooked food.

Information about Acai Bowls
There is also an informative article about Acai bowls reported by The Huffington Post and Dr Oz. I'm convinced that Acai Bowls are not only healthy, but extremely tasty as well!

Dilmah Tea Appreciation Workshop Smile Oct 20, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Restaurant | Pasta | Steaks and Grills | Halal

Where was tea first invented? I never knew the answer till I attended a Tea Appreciation workshop hosted by Dilmah Tea! Did you know that tea is an accidental discovery made by Emperor Shen Nong in 2373BC? It was more than two thousand years later that tea was brought into Japan.

Aside from wine pairing and coffee pairing, there is tea pairing as well. Light tea goes with light food, and heavy tea goes with heavy food!

Chip & Slaw Sandwich

The Chip and Slaw Sandwich goes well with Dilmah Exceptional English Breakfast and Pure Peppermint!

Here's a summary of the recommended tea pairing with food:

White Tea with delicate food
Green Tea with seafood, fried food and salads
Black Tea with sweet, rich and savoury food
Oolong tea with sweet snacks and cakes

To brew the perfect cup of tea, you need to consider the temperature, amount of water and steeping time. Never use reboiled water and add honey instead of sugar as a natural sweetener!

There are quite a few places serving the Exceptional Range, such as Carpenter & Cook, The Bake House by Carpenter & Cook, Two Tall Trees, Cornerstone @ Bishan Park, Ms Molly’s, Coffee Daily, 63 Celcius and Thai in Town!

Layered Ice-cream cake

The layered ice-cream cake pairs perfectly well with Dilmah Exceptional Elegant Earl Grey & Ceylon Green Tea!

Don't forget to store your tea bags in an airtight container! Only open the tea packets when you need it, because tea leaves actually absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. If you don't believe it, try putting a tea bag near some durians and your next brew would taste like durian tea!

Harry's Bar Smile Apr 22, 2015
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Restaurant | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches

I had the pleasure of joining OpenSnap's tasting session at the launch of Harry's Bar's breakfast menu at Boat Quay, and this made me envy those working in the vicinity! I believe a hearty breakfast is always a great start to confronting the day's challenges ahead — and Harry's new menu offerings certainly provide a great way to kickstart the day!
Having a caffe latte while dining alfresco may not be very advisable in the midday heat, but it works just fine in the morning! I absolutely loved the deep, bitter essence and the frothy foam on top. It was also a visual treat to observe the gradual blending of the layers of foam and coffee!

Caffe Latte

You can't go wrong with ham and cheese. A combination of these in your croissant is food heaven — the flaky and melt-in-your-mouth tender crust made me wonder if this had come right out of a Paris kitchen. There was a strong milky, buttery fragrance as well. If Harry's Bar were located near my office, I think I'd eat this for breakfast every day...

Croissant Croque Monsieur

Crumbly, moist, fresh and savoury. These muffins are presented in a stylish baking cup — they make for a very presentable snack for your colleagues! Oh yes, they are baked fresh DAILY! I know many places have their muffins delivered from a central kitchen, and keep them on sale for days! None of these stale muffins at Harry's!

Assorted Muffins

Assorted muffins — Cranberry

One of the greatest challenges with pot pies is keeping them from turning soggy. We spent about 15 minutes snapping away with our cameras, and yet the pies remained crusty and flaky. Whether you go for the Creamy Chicken and Vegetables or Mushroom and Potatoes Veloute with Vegetables, you are assured of a smooth, flaky and rich-tasting experience!

Pot Pie

My heart sank when I first saw this — the sourdough sticks looked like a heart broken into two. At first sight, the eggs looked pretty unflattering, along with unevenly distributed ingredients. Surprisingly though, the consistency of the eggs was pretty brilliant! With a firm yet jelly-like texture, this is perhaps one of the best sunny side-ups I've had — the yolks in particular were gooey yet held their shape well when my knife went through them.

Ham, Bacon and Mushroom Fry Up

I would skip the Soft boiled eggs & Marmite soldiers though — the chunks of bread were a tad too salty, and the eggs seemed overly-adapted to the Singapore style of half-boiled eggs in a pot. But if you'd like to try a variation of Ya-Kun's famed breakfast eggs and toast, you might perhaps wish to give this a try!

We rounded off the session with refreshing pineapple juice. I had a bit of time to look across the river and ponder the transformation of Singapore— especially since Harry's Bar is located directly across from where our founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (aka Harry) recently lay in state inside Parliament House. Thank you to both Harrys for adding such vibrancy to Singapore!
