Ban Mian Smile Aug 18, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

I was at Boon Lay Place together with my friend to get some groceries and decided to have our lunch there directly instead of going home. The ban mian stall looks quite alright, so I ordered two bowls for the both of us from them. I didn't realise that their ban mians can also be ordered in the dry version when the customer after me ordered it, but it is too late as my order is already prepared. Anyway, my ban mian costs $3, and it comes with egg, minced meat, vegetables and ikan billis. The ikan billis is very salty, so I didn't eat it.

As for the noodles, it is quite nice, not too hard. The soup is also tasty and the egg is semi cooked such that the yolk is still runny. I love eggs like that as I love slurping the yolk up, though I must take extra care to ensure that the yolk does not drip into the soup. The minced meat is quite well seasoned and I thought the chilli is a good pairing with the meat. The next time I am there, I will try the dry version.

Affordable and tasty pasta Smile Aug 18, 2013

I came across this stall in bukit timah food centre some time ago which sells pasta. It immediately got my attention as it is quite rare to see stalls selling pasta in hawker centres. On closer look, the prices are also very reasonable from $4 onwards. I tried the Aglio-Olio pasta $5 which is pasta fried with mushrooms and bacon. The waiting time is around 10 minutes and when the pasta arrived, the portion is quite large as well. The pasta is very smooth and al dente. The sauce used for the pasta is rich and it ensured that every strand of pasta has the sauce. The mushrooms are juicy and the bacon add savouriness to the pasta. It is a very affordable and tasty pasta which I will definitely recommend you to try if you are at the food centre.

Bur bur cha cha  Smile Aug 18, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Desserts and Cakes

After our dinner, we felt like having some sweet dessert but we did not want to spend too much. Hence, we went up to Kopitiam for desserts as the desserts there are relatively cheaper compared to restaurants. We ordered the Bur Bur Cha Cha, cold. It is a dessert with coconut milk over shaved ice and topped with cubes of yam, tapicoa, and assorted jellies. The topping is quite a lot, but there is all there is as underneath the ice, there is nothing. The tapicoa is quite soft and sweet and the coconut milk complements the taste. The jellies are quite bouncy and chewy in nature which is quite nice as it provides a contrast to the coconut-ice which just melts in your mouth. Overall, it is quite alright for a $2 dessert. If you have kopitiam card you get 10% discount too.

Spending per head: Approximately $2

Cookies and cream Smile Aug 17, 2013

Categories : Italian | Ice Cream and Gelato

Each scoop of gelato at Gelateria Italia costs $4.90 if you only want a single flavor in a cup, and it will be $6.90 for 2 flavours. There are many many colourful choices of gelato on display and the good thing is that you can try the flavours before deciding which to get. I had tried the lychee, pistachio and cookies and cream before finally deciding on the cookies and cream. The cookies and cream flavour is milky and not too sweet. The gelato is very smooth to the taste too. There are some large cookie chunks in the gelato which gives a burst of chocolate taste when you bite into them. I thought that the gelato melts rather quickly as well, so it is best to consume it faster while it is still in its original form before it melts. For the many different choices available, there will be surely one flavour that you will like. I have already decided that the next time I am there, I will be buying the lychee flavour.

irresistable kuehs Smile Aug 17, 2013

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Hawker Centre

Sometimes when I go to IKEA at Alexandra, I will make it a point to go to Poh Cheu to buy its homemade kuehs. I bought the Soon Kueh and Yam Kueh a fortnight ago and each of the kueh is 80 cents. The yam kueh is only made during Fridays and Saturdays so go on either of these days if you want to get your hands on the yam kueh. I mixed and matched two boxes of two yam kuehs and three soon kuehs. I can't really choose which is nicer as both have its unique taste. The soon kueh's filling is very fragrant and it is a mixture of shredded carrots, mang guang, black fungus and shrimps fried with garlic. The taste is really nice, the filling is not soggy and some of the mang guang is still crunchy. As for the yam kueh, it is also made with pure yam. There is no flour added. The mashed yam filling has shrimps and mushrooms and it is really tasty as well. It is very hard to find yam kuehs and soon kuehs of such standard any longer, so I will always come back to Poh Cheu to buy it. If you are not eating it immediately, it can be placed in the fridge and made hot the next morning.
