Toasted bread Smile Aug 17, 2013
Categories : Singaporean | Coffeeshop

I was hungry so I stopped by the nearby Kopitiam for a light bite. The set of eggs, toasted bread and coffee/tea is definitely more worth it at $2, but because I already had an egg for lunch, choosing the set will result in me eating 3 eggs which is too much, so I just ordered the toasted bread by itself without eggs or drink.

The toasted bread costs $1.20. The spread inside is standard, kaya with a block of butter. The bread is toasted fresh, so it is delicious as the butter melts with the heat from the bread, making the toast very moist and tasty. The kaya used is quite sweet but it is not cloyingly sweet so I did not have problems finishing everything. If you are not particular about the kaya, I would think having the toasted set in kopitiams is definitely a more economical alternative than going to Ya Kun where the same set of eggs, bread and drink

can cost more than $4.

Soon Heng Rojak  Smile Aug 17, 2013
Categories : Food Court

Whenever I am at Toa Payoh HDB hub, I will never fail to order rojak from Soon Heng. The queue for the rojak is very long, but definitely worth the wait. The trick is to get the person who finished his meal first to quickly queue for it. The reason for the long wait is because the uncle prepares each plate individually so that the flavour and freshness is not lost in a large batch.

The prawn paste here is very fragrant and it is the mix of the alkaline water, chili and etc which the uncle used in making the "base" of the rojak that made it so addictive. In addition, the ingredients are also very fresh, the you tiao and tau pok is crisp, pineapple, cucumber, mang guang, bean sprouts etc are all fresh and are all well coated and tossed with the prawn paste. The peanuts also add some crunch and the serving of peanuts is very very generous. Do try it if you havent. The rojak here costs $4.

Coming back for the rice! Smile Aug 17, 2013

Categories : Hainanese | Chicken Rice

My daughter introduced me to this chicken rice stall at far east plaza. It can get quite crowded during lunch time so we went there slighter earlier to beat the crowd. Once seated, the dishes are served very quickly. We ordered each a one person's set which costs $4. I like white chicken but there is also roast chicken available. The set comes with dark soy sauce, homemade chilli dip and blended ginger paste.

The rice is not too oily and it is very fragrant. I added some of the ginger paste and chilli to it and wow it is really really good. The chilli is spicy enough and it makes the rice very yummy, until I finished the entire plate before I finish my plate of chicken. The chicken is also nice, it is tender and you can mix it with the dark sauce if you like your foods to be saltier. I love their rice and it is what will keep me coming back.

Spending per head: Approximately $4

Too salty Cry Aug 17, 2013

I am not sure what made me buy this but I got it without thinking as I wanted a quick bite on something that is filling. I have not indulged in this fried carrot cake since a very long time ago, so it immediately caught my eye. I remember buying this from the roadsides when I was little. This costs 90 cents. The carrot cake is still warm when I bought it so that helped in enhancing the taste. Fried food is always better when ate warm rather than cold. However, I find that the carrot cake is quite salty and it is hard to finish the entire piece. Also, the flour ratio is too much, making it quite hard. I only ate half before I found it too be unbearingly salty. I guess it is hard to find those street side carrot cakes that are soft and not so salty any longer.

Yam kueh  Smile Aug 17, 2013
Categories : Coffeeshop

I see many of its outlets around hawker centres and I personally have tried its yam kueh and chee cheong fun from its other outlets and found it to be really nice. Hence, I decided to order my yam kueh from this stall over the other stall which does not have any customers. The yam kueh here (2 pieces) costs $1.60. I asked for the sauce on the side so that I can control the amount I wanted to add to my food. The yam kueh is already flavourful on its own so I just add chilli to it. The yam kueh has chunks of diced yam and dried shrimps in the kueh which is what I like. It is also soft to the bite unlike some factory made yam kuehs which are very hard.
