Mixed saba and beef set  Smile Aug 15, 2013

Categories : Korean | Food Court

Today, I had lunch at The Central again. The other time I was there, I had recalled seeing quite a lot of people ordering from this korean stall so I decided to try it for my lunch. I ordered the mixed saba and beef set with rice which costs $6.50. There is also kimchi and ikan bilis provided on a small saucer. I went there before noon, so I was able to find seats easily. The order came less than 5 minutes later. The saba fish is very well grilled, the fish meat inside is tender and moist and it is very tasty as well. The only thing that is troublesome about eating this is the bones in the fish. As for the beef, the beef is sliced thinly so it is not too tough to bite. The beef is also well seasoned with its marinade and mixing the beef together with the rice made the rice very tasty as well. The rice is quite authentic as it is sticky and the grains are short. The stall is quite popular as around 12:15, people started to stream in and order takeaways.

Carrot cake Smile Aug 15, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Hawker Centre

Last weekend, I specially went to this market to buy the carrot cake back for my family as I have heard my friends at the market raving about this carrot cake. I didn't manage to get a store front photo as the photo turned out blurry as someone knocked onto me and I didn't have the time to retake as I wanted to get home as soon as possible so that the carrot cake is not cold. From the photo, you can see that the egg used in frying the carrot cake is very generous and hence, the carrot cake is very well coated with egg. It is really delicious as well as the carrot cake is fried well with a taste of wok hei and there is also ample chai poh in the carrot cake to give it more flavour. The generous egg coating is also a large plus point. The only thing is that it is slightly oily, but once a while, it is good to enjoy this. Each packet is $3.

juicy oysters Smile Aug 15, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre

I have heard about the oyster omelette (orh jian) here and hence decided to order one plate to share between me and my two other friends. There is quite a wait for it, so the idea is to order it halfway through your meal so that it will be ready once you have finished your main meal.

The oysters here are quite large and you can smell it from afar as it was being dished to our table. There is some lightly charred bits of oyster and egg and it is really that which makes it so much more tasty. The starch is also not too much, just enough to allow the eggs and oyster to be held together. Every bite of the orh jian is an enjoyment and when you bite into the oyster, the burst of flavour is simply undescriable. The chili dip is also sourish and spicy and it helps to enhance the juiciness of the orh jian. This is definitely one of the best orh jians I have ever tried.

Roast duck noodles Smile Aug 15, 2013

My family and I had our dinner orders all from this stall selling roasted meat. We ordered a mixture of different individual dishes, my children all ordered rice while I ordered the roast duck noodle. Since we ordered a total of 5 plates, I requested for the gravy on a separate bowl so that we can add the amount that we like individually to our noodles/rice. The duck meat is quite tender and the duck skin is also not too oily as it does not have a thick layer of fats beneath it. I love this type of duck as I can indulge in the whole piece, meat and skin as it is not too oily. The noodles are quite eggy and it is very tasty with its gravy and the chili sauce. My plate of noodles costs $3.50 which is quite alright given the portion of the food and its taste.

Lovely high tea Smile Aug 15, 2013
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Hotel | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi | Buffet

I went for their weekend high tea buffet recently and I was quite impressed with the food offerings. The buffet tables are laid out and categorised according to the types of food offered - salad bar, dessert, roasted section, Japanese section, cooked food, bread and soup section etc.

I am a fan of Japanese food, so I will always grab some sashimi from the Japanese section. The salmon sashimi is quite fresh and its colour is also very vibrant which indicates its freshness. I had 2 servings of the salmon sashimi. The tempura is also delicious. The batter is not too thick and it is crispy to the bite. The shrimps are also bouncy and qq and the shrimps are very sweet tasting. For an international buffet, I thought their Japanese section is quite well done. There is also cooked food, most of it is Chinese food like egg tofu, spinach and their signature sea cucumber with braised meat. I would think the cooked food will rotate so it may be different for different days. I would say the cooked food that I tried are all of acceptable standards. Teh dessert choices are more limited, but I love the ice cream offerings and there are also toppings which you can add to the ice cream. Overall, I had an enjoyable high tea.
