Chocolate log cake  Smile Jan 29, 2012
Categories : Bakery

I decided to try the log cake from Icing Room for Christmas. It is relatively small, which is perfect for 2 people. The chocolate is very thick, almost like eating brownie. However, it isn’t as sweet. It was just-nice sweetness for me but my friend found it slightly too sweet.

On the log cake itself there were 2 macaroni and an icing candy. The macaron from Icing Room is pretty average. It is relatively bland, carrying a weak taste of its flavour (eg .lemon, orange). The icing candy is regular icing.

Overall, it was relatively good at a low price of $10. Even though it was a small cake they decorated the cake with cute festive decorations. Its perfect for those who are looking for a cheap and tasty log cake to celebrate christmas.

Spending per head: Approximately $10

Chicken teriyaki curry rice  Smile Jan 29, 2012

Benten is probably one of the best restaurants to dine in Jurong Point during a Friday night. The restaurant has a lot of seats so I didn’t have to wait for more than 30 minutes for a seat.

Anyway, I decided to have the Chicken Teriyaki Curry Rice which was served in a boat-like plate. They have nicely separated the curry from the omelette and meat which I found was rather customer friendly since not everyone wants to have their rice soaked in curry. The curry is Japanese curry, which is relatively sweet and doesn’t use coconut milk. It goes well with the chicken which was teriyaki chicken. The teriyaki chicken was covered with sweet teriyaki sauce but the meat could have been a little juicier. The rice regular local rice (instead of Japanese rice) covered with egg (its not wrapped omelette).

It also comes with a small side salad. They use fresh vegetables and I especially liked the sauce they used for their salad. It’s a little like thousand island (maybe it IS thousand island).

It costs $11.80 for the food item. Considering Benten provides the excellent customer service, short waiting time, and tasty food, I would say its worth the money.

Taste: The sauce is indeed special. It carries a slight taste of the vegetable (i'm still not sure what it was) underneath the chicken. It tastes slightly sour and sweet. The sauce goes well with the chicken which was very nicely roasted. The skin of the chicken was crispy and the meat was extremely soft and moist. The whole dish was perfect.

Environment: Mayim has been constantly changing their arrangements and stuff to make it more comfortable for diners. Since i was there after lunch hours, it was less crowded and quieter for an intimate meal.

Customer service: The only bad thing about Mayim is most staffs are unable to communicate in english fluently. Being weak at mandarin, it definitely is hard for me to ask for something i want while dining there. Also, the staffs will not take initiative for anything. From taking orders to refilling water. The good food does make up for the poor service though.

Price: Although at first sight it may seem like its a small portion, it is actually filling even for 2 people at only $7.80. Not only was it filling, it was delicious. Additionally, it is actually pretty cheap. Other chinese restaurants would probably charge a higher price. Personally, i felt that it was worth every cent. I won't mind having it again.

Tonkotsu Ramen Smile Nov 22, 2011

I've always wondered how those packet Japanese ramen tastes like and I finally decided to give it a try. It was unexpectedly good and the noodles surprised me. It tastes just like the ones those Japanese restaurants serve. The flavour I had was Tonkotsu (pork ~) with sesame oil. The tonkotsu soup was slightly salty but actually had a unique taste and as seen, the soup was very thick. I'm not a big fan of sesame oil but it tastes fine with the tonkotsu soup. However, I'd rather not put it in next time.

It takes only 5 minutes or so to cook (the same way you cook instant noodles) and tastes similar to ramen served in typical Singapore Japanese restaurants. Costs only $5.50 for 2 servings. Its much cheaper and faster serving time as compared to Jap restaurants lol why not?

Chicken set from Pepper Lunch Smile Nov 21, 2011

This is my favourite item from Pepper Lunch. Its relatively cheap, very filling and it tastes great. Its just chicken mixed with rice and corn. I personally like adding around 2 spoonful of the garlic soy sauce they provide. It goes well with the rice. Also, I like mixing all the stuff together and eat it like fried rice.

The corn they use are pretty sweet and juicy, thankfully. There's nothing too special about the taste of the chicken but its very juicy. The mixture of the ingredients is perfect and I'd always recommend this particular set to my friends. It costs only $6.70 if I'm not wrong (That's not even student price yet).
