Brunch by the Sea Smile May 19, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Italian | Restaurant | Brunch

Located in Custom House, there is this Italian restaurant.

It is its third outlet after its outlets in Florence and Vienna. Singapore is its first outlet outside Europe and has been operating here since 2010. Recently the restaurant starts to offer brunch menu on Saturday from 11am to 2.30pm.

The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor dine in area, with a unblock view of Marina Bay Sands which is located across the river. If it is not too hot, it would be better to dine outdoor with the wind blowing.
Fritattate al Tartufo

Fritattate al Tartufo

Fritattate al Tartufo
($22++)
Egg Frittata, Ciabatta Toast, Truffle Cream
Everyone loves this the most that we even ask for a second order. The truffle cream tastes rich and creamy but not overwhelming. The egg frittata is soft and moist, and goes well with the creamy sauce.
Uova Strapazatte con Funghi

Uova Strapazatte con Funghi

Uova Strapazatte con Funghi
($20++)
Scrambled Eggs, Sauté Mushroom, Rustica Toast, Sauté Spinach
As spinach is not available, it is replaced with broccoli. The scrambled egg is well cooked as it is firm on the outside but creamy inside. The sauted mushrooms is quite yummy.
Pollo Grigliato

Grilled Chicken Breast, Fried Egg, Crispy Bacon, Ciabatta Toast
Although one has worried that the chicken breast will be tough , but it turns to be quite tender and flavourful.
Fumo Salmone

Smoked Salmon, Fried Egg, Ricotta Cheese, Ciabatta Toast
The smoked salmon does not taste too salty and is a great choice with the cheese.

Grilled Spicy Italian Sausages, Rustica Toast, Fried Eggs, Arrabbiata Sauce
The sausages is a favourite for everyone as they are juicy and flavourful, without being too spicy.
Procacci Delizia

Procacci Delizia

Procacci Delizia
($30++)
Mortadella, Parma Ham, Taleggio Cheese, Scrambled Eggs, Rustica Toast
This is like the big breakfast dish with everything in it. It is so atas to have parma ham for breakfast. I like the cheese which is soft with a melt in the mouth texture, while not tasting too strong.
Uovo Benedetto

Uovo Benedetto

Uovo Benedetto
($22++)
Poached Egg, Rustica Toast, Crispy Bacon, Hollandise Sauce, Caviar
It is actually Egg Benedict. The poached egg is a bit too cooked as the yolk does not produce a smooth lava flow when cut. I look high and low but could not see any caviar on this dish. The sauce is rich and creamy, while the bacon is crispy without too hard or oily.
Prosecco

Prosecco

For $25++ per person, enjoy free flow Prosecco (limited time only). Or for $35++ per person, enjoy free flow beverages inclusive of Prosecco, Peroni Beer, Soft drinks (Coca-Cola, Diet Coca-Cola, Sprite and Ginger Ale) and Juices (Orange, Lime, Cranberry, Pineapple and Apple). Or choose the $15++ per person, for free flow of Soft drinks (Coca-Cola, Diet Coca-Cola, Sprite and Ginger Ale) and Juices (Orange, Lime, Cranberry, Pineapple and Apple)!

Overall the dishes are delicious, except for the slices of bread that are served with the dishes. The crust of the breads is quite hard to cut through. With great view of the Marina Bay area and delicious food for brunch, the restaurant is a great choice for one to spend a quiet and relaxing morning.

Food Tasting Smile Apr 10, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Fusion | Bars/Lounges

A discreet bar & kitchen nestled in suburban Opera Estate, cleverly named after the street it resides on, Swan Lake Avenue. It is also another word which means quench or satisfy (one's thirst).  It is located about 2 bus stops away from Bedok MRT station, hidden by the rows of landed properties.

The restaurant is small in size, with both indoor and outdoor dine in area. It offers asian fusion dishes. The restaurant is decorated simply with blackboards menu on the walls.

Spicy Tomato Soup ($5)
Served in a shot glass, the soup is hot and spicy.

Chilli Crab Rillettes ($14)
Served with bread.

The rillettes is served in a small glass bottle. Spreaded on the crispy but hard bread, it reminds one of otak on bread.

Beef Rendang Nachos

Beef Rendang Nachos

Beef Rendang Nachos (Regular $18// Monster $35)
Expecting yellow nachos, but it turns out to be deep fried wanton skins. The beef cube is quite tender with a melt in the mouth texture. But the rendang sauce is a more western feel, as it is not as spicy as the usual kind, and has a cream base feel.

Crispy Midwings

Crispy Midwings

Crispy Midwings ($9)
It is not as crispy as I would have like. A bit soggy, but the meat is tender and tangy.

Stuffed Squid ($18)
The whole squid is stuffed with bubur pulut hitam (black glutinous rice porridge with coconut milk
), that has been cooked risotto style, and grilled.

Mushroom Lemak (v) ($15)
It looks like a bowl of Hokkien Mee when served. Topped with greens and crunchy pomegranate seeds. Although it looks very creamy, but it does not taste jelat. The noodles is very soft, Nua Nua in texture.

Norwegian Mackerel ($35)
It served with a pail of truffled sweet potato fries, edamame beans, spicy onion relish, and pickled ginger. The fries tastes crispy, sweet and unique with a hint of truffle oil smell and taste. The fish is fresh and chunky. The spicy relish is rich and yummy. The pickled ginger seems more for some stronger flavoured items such as century egg.

Chye Poh Potato Salad ($5)
The potato salad tastes not bad but cannot taste any chye poh in it. I also feel that it is a bit on the dry side.

Asian Pesto Chicken Noodles ($18)
It looks like a green colored version of fried Hokkien Mee when served. The pesto sauce tastes difficult from the usual type, as it has quite a strong tangy lemongrass taste. One is expecting a herbal taste with a name pesto on the dish. Similar to the above noodle dish, the noodles here is the Nua Nua type.

Barbecue Pork Ribs ($24)
Served on a bed of mashed cauliflower, with pickled red cabbage, edamame beans and wasabi like brown sauce. The ribs is fork tender and flavourful. The edamame beans has a garlicky taste. Whereas the pickled red cabbage reminds me of the traditional German Rotkohl (Sweet/Sour Red Cabbage).

US Angus Beef ($26)
Served with Salad & Sweet Potato Mash.
The beef which is slow cooked in sous vide style, tastes very tender. The sweet potato mash is fine and creamy. Interestingly it is served with pomegranate seeds too.

Sticky Date Pudding with salted caramel ice-cream ($8)
Served in a small bowl, the small pudding is covered by the ice cream. The pudding is soft and moist, as well as, not too sweet. The salted caramel ice-cream, which is made in house from scratch, is quite smooth and creamy in texture.

Salted Caramel Ice Cream ($4), Swap with Bacon Caramel (+$1.5)
This is the well known Bacon Ice Cream. It looks like Salted Caramel Ice Cream. But in the mouth, one can feel the savoury, smoky, and chewy taste of bacon on top of the sweet, and salty salted caramel taste.

Overall the food is delicious and plated elegantly, with reasonable prices. As it is a wednesday, there is not much customers around. The place is quite relaxing and cozy. Overall it is gem in the neighbourhood. By the way, there is no GST or service charge when dining in this place.

Food Tasting at a cozy place Smile Mar 13, 2015

Categories : Spanish | Restaurant | Paella | Brunch

Tonite I am invited to a food tasting session by OpenRice. The restaurant is located in the middle of a row of shophouses. Its dine in area is small with both indoor and outdoor.
Dine in Area (Indoor)

Dine in Area (Indoor)

With brick textured wall, wooden shelves on the wall and warm orange lights, it gives one a homey and cozy feeling. Most of the items in the restaurant are imported from Spain, including sparkling wines and sparkling water, as well as, the rice which is being used in the paella.

jamon

jamon

The restaurant is turning itself to a Jamon Bar, which is unheard of in Singapore as a leg of jamon cannot keep for long once it is been used. It served 5 different types of Jamon at the counter, with the oldest about 5-6 years old to the youngest about 18 months old and each costing about an average of $8000. The jamon has to be craved as flat and straight as possible and staffs have to be trained to do it.
Chef Edwards

Chef Edwards

Tonite we served with dishes by its new co-chef Chef Edward Esmero. Although born in Philippines, he grows up with Latino influences, which brings him to Spanish food. He has worked in various places around the world, including Gordon's Grill of Goodwood Park Hotel.
Sangria Tinta (Red)

Sangria Tinta (Red)

Sangria Tinta (Red) ($12/ glass, $42/jar)
We start the meal with a glass of Sangria Tinta (Red) each. It has red wine, mixed with various fruits such as strawberry, orange and peach in it. It has a fruity taste and does not taste strong as there is lots of ice cubes in it.
jamon and cheese from the deli

jamon and cheese from the deli

Next we have a selection of jamon and cheese from the deli, served with lightly toasted bread.
10 Vetas Jamon

10 Vetas Jamon

10 Vetas Jamon ($16/ 25grams)
This jamon ham is made of black pig and is about 2.5years old.
It tastes quite flavourful and tender.
Fermin Serrno

Fermin Serrno

Fermin Serrno ($7/ 25 grams)
This jamon ham is made of white pig and is about 18mths old.
Although it looks less drier compares to the other jamon, it tastes slightly less flavourful.
Manchego Cheese

Manchego Cheese

Manchego ($8/ 50grams)
It is a type of queso (Spanish Cheese). It is made from sheep and the texture is hard. It is served with fruit paste. The sweet taste from Quince Paste (a type of fruit paste) balances the strong taste of the cheese.
Aceitunas Romero

Aceitunas Romero

Aceitunas Romero ($6)
Marinated olives in rosemary and lemon garlic
Its simple and sharp taste opens up one's appetite.
Croquetas

Croquetas

Croquetas

Croquetas

Croquetas ($12/ 4pcs)
Croquettes
Lightly fried jamon-stuffed creamy croquettes.
Inside it is filled yummy soft mashed potatoes with bits of the flavourful ham. I would prefer the outside to be a bit more crispier. The onion alioli which is served with it, adds another dimension of flavour to it. The onion alioli is made in house and sold off the counter in jar of 240 grams. It is a classic sauce and could go well with anything such as potato chips.
Gambas al Ajillo

Gambas al Ajillo

Gambas al Ajillo ($16)
Garlic Prawns
A traditional house favourite. Fresh shrimp cooked in a dish of boiling olive oil with garlic and chili pepper.
It looks rather oily and spicy but the spicy taste is just a hint. The sliced bread tastes great with the olive oil sauce. The prawns is fat and juicy.
Champinones al Horno

Champinones al Horno

Champinones al Horno ($15/ 3pcs)
Garlic MushroomsTender mushroom stacks topped with shrimp, richly flavored in garlic and olive oil.
It looks simple, but with one bite, the mushroom bursts out with juice all over the place. The mushrooms have been grilled before roasting in the oven. This helps the mushrooms to contain all the juice within themselves. And beware that it is quite hot too.
Tortilla de Patata con Alioli

Tortilla de Patata con Alioli

Tortilla de Patata con Alioli
($8/ 4pieces)
Potato Omelette with Alioli
The national dish of Spain. Traditional Spanish egg omelette with potatoes and onions, served with homemade alioli.
It looks like a multi layered omelette. With a bite, you will tastes the soft potato with the sweet onion in it.
Paella de la Casa

Paella de la Casa

Paella de la Casa
($52/ small, $94/ large)
House Paella
The house Paella is a full-flavored recipe made with special ingredients including black mussels, chorizo, prawns, and chicken.
The rice is flavoured with saffron, which gives it a unique flavour.
Arroz Negra

Arroz Negra

Arroz Negra
($46/ small, $82/ large)
Black Ink Paella
Literally ‘black rice’, the Arroz Negra is flavored with a black squid ink broth with prawns and squid, served with a side of alioli.
It takes about 20 mintues to be cooked, which is shorter than the other dish as seafood takes a shorter time to be cooked. The rice is moist and tangy with the lemon juicy and alioli mixed into it.
Dessert Platter

Dessert Platter

Next we are each served a Dessert Platter.
Churros con Chocolate

Churros con Chocolate

Churros con Chocolate ($12)
Star-shaped dough pastry sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, served with warm chocolate.
The churros tastes light and crispy on its own. Dipped in the rich chocolate, it is so sinfully yummy.
Strawberry Ice-Cream

Strawberry Ice-Cream

Strawberry Ice-Cream
This hand-churned ice-cream uses milk and fresh fruit to make. It has to churn by hand constantly. It tastes milky and refreshing, totally different from the usual strawberry ice-cream
Tarta de Chocolate

Tarta de Chocolate

Tarta de Chocolate ($14)
Chocolate Tart
A triple layer of crumbly crust, a truffle-like interior, and a shiny glaze make this tartlet irresistible to chocolate lovers. Served with homemade ice-cream.
The chocolate filling is thick and rich which will be well loved by chocolate lovers. It is served with crushed almond cookies and olive oil. No wonder it is an award winning dessert.

Overall the food is great. But it would be great to come in group, in order to try out more dishes, as dishes as Paella is huge in serving. Besides having a great meal, one also could purchase rice, olives, cheeses and other items imported from Spain at the counter too.

Seasons Bistro's Selections Smile Jan 19, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Brunch

Tonight I am invited to a food tasting event at this restaurant by OpenRice. Although the restaurant is located in TripleOne Somerset, which is just walking distance from the MRT station, most people are still quite lost with its location. The building is more commonly known as PUB building to the local Singaporeans. Most will remember going to the building to pay water bills in the past. The restaurant is located at the first floor, just next to the entrance facing Pan Pacific Serviced Suites Orchard.

The restaurant offers North American Cuisine (consists such as Canadian cuisine, American cuisine, Mexican cuisine and Central American cuisine) and changes its menu seasonally. The restaurant also has a bar which serves a wide spread of drinks. The restaurant is decorated in black tones and American style but in a mordern way.

Baja Cobb's Salad
($19++)
An almost mexican salad ! Cajun spiced chicken, eggs, beans, bacon, olives, corn, mixed greens, watercress, tomatoes, avocado, blue cheese and house vinaigrette.
Such a big serving and with a bit of everything, everyone is remarking that it is a great and filling one dish meal. From the crispy bacon, to the juicy chicken and crispy greens, it is such an explosion in my mouth.

Superfood Salad
($18++)
Quinoa, broccoli, chick peas, blueberries, capsicums, avocado, baby spinach, herbs, pomegrante & pumpkin seeds, citrus vinaigrette.
It is a huge plate of greens, which frightens off the guys. I like the use of quinoa in the salad which makes it quite filling. The pomegrante has juicy and popping effects in the mouth.

Blackened Fish Taco
($16++)
Avocado mayonnise, pickled onions, crispy shallots, cotija cheese and cliantro jalapeno watercress salad on tortilla shell.
With so many toppings (especially the tangy tasting, pink-colored pickled onions) on top of the juicy Haddock fish fillet, it opens my appetite for the meal.

SFC Seasons Fried Chicken ($25++)
Succotash and deviled ranch dressing and homemade catsup.
The fried chicken is quite spicy with lots of different spices in it. I feel that the ranch dressing is a bit too overpowering to go with it, whereas the the catsup is a nice touch to it.

Pan Seared Foie Gras
($19++)
Pain de mie, chocolate ganache, bacon jam, caramelized bananas and granola crumbs.
The bacon jam is interesting with bits of chewy bacon in it. The caramelized bananas has a melt in the mouth taste. Together it is a great combination. But the levels of lighting in the restaurant is quite poor, and we could barely figure out what we are eating.

Season's Cheese Burger
($25++)
Homemade 200grams beef patty, stripy jack cheese, brioche bun, pickled jalepenos, caramalized onions, bacon, mushrooms, catsup and mustard with fries.
It is served on a big wooden chopping board. I feel that the patty could be more juicy. The bun which is freshly by next door Imperial Treasure Bakery, is quite soft and pillowy.

But I am more turn on by the melt in the mouth caramlized onions on of the patty.

Jerk Spiced Pork Meatloaf
($29++)
Maple Bacon, Spinach, Mashed Potatoes & Gravey.
The meatloaf tastes a bit dry but filled with different spices. The creamy mash potatoes is a great balance to the dish as it makes feel not so dry after all. The gravey has a chocolatey taste to it.

Roasted Lamb Rack
($32++)
Baked potato, Asparagus, Brussel Sprouts, Veal Jus, Mint Pesto.
Currently this dish is not in the menu, but will be offered in the upcoming Valentine's Day dinner menu. The lamb is juicy and not too gamey in taste. The veal jus that is served with it has a chocolatey taste, while the mint pesto has a garlicky taste which I like very much considering that I do not like mint much. The potato has been mashed and mixed with other seasonings and cheese before baking. It tastes creamy and soft.

Southend Pasta
($22++)
Homemade tomato sauce, tagliatelle, own chorizo sausages, fennel, tomatoes, basil, chilli & loads of parmesan.
It is not too spicy despite having chilli in it. But the taste of the chorizo sausages is a bit too strong for me.

Maple Pumpkin Cheesecake
($12++)
It is served with strawberry, blueberries and cranberry cream. The cheesecake is creamy and does not taste too sweet. The cranberry cream is fruity sweet with bits of fruits in it, which adds another taste to the simple looking cake.

Miss D's Pecan Pie
($12++)
Comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Filled with huge pieces of pecan nuts, it is nutty and not too sweet. But the crust is quite hard to cut through with a fork.

Overall the dishes are great and huge in servings. Best for people who come in groups and can share the huge servings with all. Further more, it is located in such centralised location which should be easy for most to go.

Newly Opened 3-in-1 place OK Dec 27, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Fusion | Café | Burgers and Sandwiches | Coffee | Brunch

I am invited to a preview of this new place. It is a 3-in-1 concept by The General Company (the same folks behind Tyrwhitt General Company) and Architology which consists of

a kitchen serving yakitori on the first floor,

a bespoke cocktail bar on the second floor, manned by head bartender Eugene Chua (formerly from Ah Sam Cold Drink Stall ),

A workspace area for craftsman or designer on the third floor.

The workspace area is quite interesting as it is used to conduct workshops with trainers sometimes fly in from overseas. There is living room, workstation area, craft area where silk screen artwork is done and a glass room for heavy noisy stuffs such as hammering.

When we reach the first floor, the beauiful mural painting captured everyone's attention.

The stools by the wall are very unique too, with wheel like structure under them.

The dining in area has a simple and clean look, surrounded by unqiue stools around.

Menu is a stack of papers held by a wooden clip board.
SouthSide

SouthSide

Signature Cocktail Drink : SouthSide ($20)
Hendrick's Gin, Lemon Juice, Simple Syrup, Fresh Mint
It tastes light and refreshing.
Chicken High

Chicken High

Chicken High ($6 for 2 skewers)
Classic chicken thigh on a skewer, marinated and grilled, juicy and tender, glazed with home-made tare sauce.
Tastes a bit too salty for me, although it is tender.
Shiok Bak

Shiok Bak

Shiok Bak ($6 for 2 skewers)
Dry cured then traditionally roasted pork belly slab, moist and tender meat, crispy crackling skin, served with house-made fermented bean curd sauce & roasted sesame seeds.
Prefer the skin to be more crispy crackling. The fat is lacking of the melt in the mouth texture.
Skirt Steak

Skirt Steak

Skirt Steak ($8 for 2 skewers)
24 hour marinated beef skirt steak, rich & fragrant yellow pear & soy marinade with aromatics, grilled till tender, served with roasted garlic puree or honey whole grain mustard.
The steak is served middle rare and some may feel it is a bit raw. It is quite tender and flavourful.
Refinery Rice Bowl

Refinery Rice Bowl

Refinery Rice Bowl ($6)
Flavourful Japanese Rice, slow-cooked and shredded pork collar with a brown sugar glaze, signature 1 minute "Onsen" egg, soy & sherry prickled shiitakes, pickled ginger, topped with tare sauce
Although each of the items tastes quite salty on their own, when mixed together, it actually tastes quite nice.
shiitakes

shiitakes

shiitakes
The mushroom is lightly seasoned and tastes quite juicy.
Chicken Mid Joint

Chicken Mid Joint

Chicken Mid Joint

Overall the food is average and the menu is limited. But it is just the preview and there is more to come. Quite an interesting concept place. I can imagine that it will be super popular when it opens for business
