Ever since the restaurant been opened, I has been thinking to come down to try this place. Tonight I decide to bring Mom here for dinner. The restaurant is fully booked on a weekday night and I am lucky to have made a booking before coming down.

The restaurant is decorated in a simple bright and white look. The restaurant serves Italian-inspired Vegetarian Cuisine at $25++ per person for a 8-course meal. There is also an Express Lunch meal which cost $18++ per person. Ala-carte is also available at your preference ($16.80 per main course, $8.80 each for starter or soup, $7.80 each for salad and $4.80 each for dessert or drink).

First Course : Palate Cleanser
A shot glass of pinkish vinegar is served as a palate cleanser. It tastes sweet and light.

Second Course : Starter
The SUFOOD Appetizer
A delicate trio of poached Japanese yuca root drizzled with a blueberry coulis, a stack of oriental, white water snowflake greens and a savoury cherry tomato jelly.
It is recommended to start from the sweet and crunchy yuca root, and end with the savoury jelly, while sipping the palate cleanser between the dish. The delightful looking dish quite pick up my appetite.
Rosemary Breadsticks

Rosemary Breadsticks

Third Course : Bread
Rosemary Breadsticks
Freshly baked, home-made rosemary-infused breadsticks, served with a sweet mustard or blueberry dip.
By default only the mustard sauce will be served, so one has to request for the sweet blueberry dip. Between the 2 dips, I feel that the stronger flavoured blueberry dip is a better choice.

Fourth Course : Salad
Summer Salad

Summer Salad

Summer Salad
A colourful array of sweet potato, carrot, pepper and seasonal fruits served with Thousand Island dressing and sesame sauce.
With just vegetable sticks and sauce, it is a simple and light dish.
Mushroom Salad

Mushroom Salad

Mushroom Salad
Button and Shiitake mushrooms with steamed broccoli and sliced cherry tomatoes glazed in a vinegar dressing.
It is a well seasonsed dish, light and refreshing.

Fifth Course : Soup
Cabbage & Sweet Potato Stew

Cabbage & Sweet Potato Stew

Cabbage & Sweet Potato Stew
Konjac root stewed with cabbage and sweet potato.
Although the soup looks light and clear, it tastes quite flavourful.
Mushroom & Pea Pottage

Mushroom & Pea Pottage

Mushroom & Pea Pottage
Button, Shiitake and King Oyster mushrooms stewed with blended sweet peas.
I am not a fan of pea, but this soup is quite tasty with bits of mushroom in it.

Sixth Course : Main
Baked Potato Al Funghi

Baked Potato Al Funghi

Baked Potato Al Funghi
Steamed King Oyster mushrooms drizzled with Italian herb vinaigrette and a slice of baked potato, topped with stir-fried Button mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and a layer of melted cheese.
The King Oyster mushrooms are fat and juicy, surrounding a light sweet potato mash. I barely feel the cheesy cheese on the baked potato, but it is quite a tasty combination with the sauteed mushrooms and tomato inside.
Wild Mushroom Charcoal Tagliatelle

Wild Mushroom Charcoal Tagliatelle

Wild Mushroom Charcoal Tagliatelle
King Oyster mushrooms sautéed in a light olive oil and homemade dressing on a bed of fragrant charcoal tagliatelle.
At the first impression, I have thought that the white roll is vegetarian sotong. But it turns out to be King Oyster mushroom. The tagliatelle has a QQ texture, but I do not quite take to the taste of sweet basil which is in the dish.

Seventh Course : Desserts
Sesame Panna Cotta

Sesame Panna Cotta

Sesame Panna Cotta
A traditional Italian dessert of cream and milk simmered with a black sesame seed puree, served chilled and topped with walnuts.
A very milky dessert, with crunchy and sweet walnuts. Yummy.
Banana Cheesecake

Banana cheesecake drizzled with blueberry sauce, accompanied with chocolate wafer roll.
It tastes light with a hint of banana.

Eighth Course : Drinks
The Ashitaba

The Ashitaba

The Ashitaba
Restorative Japanese Ashitaba leaves, blended with aloe vera juice and honey.
A very light and refreshing drink, with bits of aloe vera fresh in it.
Passion Fruit Calamansi Tea

Passion Fruit Calamansi Tea

Passion Fruit Calamansi Tea
Refreshing aromatic calamansi tea with fresh passion fruit.
This is a instant wake me up drink, which gives me quite a shock.

Overall the food is very nice and well valued for money. Despite the small servings, I feel quite full after the meal. Despite been a full house, service is quite smooth and swift. It is refreshing to find a vegetarian restaurant that is different from the usual and does not serve the usual mock meat which I dislike alot.

The restaurant is located above a TCM shop, which I almost walk past.
Dine in area

Dine in area

After walking up the narrow staircase, we are met with a small dine in area. The place is decorated in a very zen look. As it is almost closing time, there is limited items in the menu available. The staff has kindly marked the menu with stars for the available items.

Olive Rice 橄榄饭 ($4)
This is only type of rice available. I am surprised that the rice is quite tasty on its own and does not have the usual salty olive taste.

Qi Tonic Chicken Soup 补气嫩鸡汤 ($7.50)
A veritable qi tonic, especially beneficial for the digestive system (脾胃 “spleen and stomach”), suitable for growing youth 益气健脾
The soup is surprisingly light and flavourful. Quite different from the usual sold outside, which is tends to be more on the salty side. The chicken is super tender.

Snow Pear with Fig Soup 雪梨无花果汤 ($7.50)
Together with almond, this soup nourishes lung and resolves phlegm. Suitable for those troubled by their cough 润肺化痰
Mother is expecting this to be a sweet soup for dessert, but it is not. Cooked with pork ribs, it has a light hint of sweetness in the soup. Interesting but flavourful soup.

Crunchy Lotus Root with Pork ($7)
The lotus root is sliced very thinly here but still tastes very crunchy and crispy. The pork is very tender too.

Clear Vision Tea 清热明目茶 ($5)
With mulberry, chrysanthemum and wolfberry to clear the mist from your eyes 含有菊花、桑叶与枸杞子
There is a lot of leaves in this tea, but it tastes of chrysanthemum mostly.

Complexion-Enhancing Tea 贵妃养颜茶 ($5)
Secret combination of flora herbs to rival Yang Guifei’s complexion brew 这秘制花茶,让您肌肤如杨贵妃一样光滑
Not sure what is inside the tea, but there is a lot of flowers in it. It tastes flowery and sweet, reminding me of longan tea.

Red Dates Muffin 红枣松饼 ($3)
It tastes naturally sweet with the small juicy red dates in it.

Black Sesame Muffin with Lemon 黑芝麻柠檬松饼 ($3)
A very yummy muffin which tastes very much like the black sesame paste dessert with its sandy texture.

Osmanthus Jelly 香甜桂花糕 ($3 for 2 pieces)
The jelly is light and tastes with a hint of Osmanthus.

Overall the food is delicious. There is not much crowd here and it is quite relaxing here. Although we are the last customers of the day, we are not rushed to finish our food.

The cafe is next to the swimming pool and offers Antipasti buffet lunch from Monday to Saturday at $38++ for adult and $19 for child. For additional $6++, one will get a choice of main course. Else for additional $10++, one will get a choice of main course and a choice of dessert. For main course, there is quite a range of choices from Pasta (Spaghetti Carbonara, Black Ink Risotto) to Meat (Roasted Chicken Roll, Stewed Pork Shank) to Seafood (Grilled Tuna Steak, Roasted Black Cod) to Pizza (Sausages, Four Cheese) to Vegetarian (Garden Minestrone). For dessert, there is Dark chocolate mouuse with raspberry jelly & mint, Apple & banana crumble with vanilla ice cream, and Tart of the day with ice cream or sorbet.

Outdoor Dine In Area

Outdoor Dine In Area

There is both indoor and outdoor dine in area. But due to the warm weather, most prefer dining indoor with air con around. The place is decorated in a relaxing style with comfy armchairs and sofas. Little JJ has a great time as he makes himself at home by milk while lying on the sofa. There is assorted magazines on the shelf by the wall, with a box of scarfs should anyone feels cold.

Although I have made a reservation a few weeks ago, the table is not made ready for us. Table setting has not done when we are shown to the table. Menu is not shown to us. Overall the service is quite messy although the place is not very crowded. It seems that the staffs seem to be lacking of direction. Finally a staff comes to do the table setting but leaves halfway through when I ask about the menu. In the end we have to wait for another staff do to the table setting. Finally I receive the menu. Again when I ask the staff about the tart of the day, she seems lost and have to wait for another to reply me.
Antipasti buffet stretch

Antipasti buffet stretch

The Antipasti buffet stretch looks small with just 2 rows of tables. But what is available looks great.

There are salads, Prosciutto e Melone (cantaloupe and Prosciutto Ham), a range of 4 different Chorizo, a range of 6 different types of cheese, a nice range of bread, Frittata (an egg-based Italian dish similar to an omelette or crustless quiche), Roasted Veal, marinated octopus and smoked fish.

While having the buffet, the first staff who has left halfway after doing the table setting, asks me if I wish to have dessert. I am shocked as I have not have my main course yet. Another staff kindly comes along after about 10 minutes to inform me that the main course would be served later, so that I would have enough time to enjoy the buffet first.

Grilled Tuna Steak
3 pieces of seared tuna, served with thinly sliced celery and tomato, plus a dash of sea salt on top. A bit too oily, but still tastes quite light.

After the buffet, a staff comes along to ask us if we want any tea or coffee. Although there is a range of tea available, he is unable to name us the list of tea available. So I ask for a menu instead. Instead a aunty turns up to take order. We order a flower tea, a rose tea and a chamomile tea. But interestingly we are served a chamomile tea, rose tea and peppermint tea in that order. I am surprised that rose tea is served in teabag form, while the rest in flower/ leave forms.

Peach Tart with Ice Cream
There are 3 tarts available today : peach tart, strawberry tart and blueberry crumble. I decide on the peach tart as it looks quite juicy. The crust is thin and buttery. Best of all it does not taste too sweet. Served with vanilla ice cream and crumble, it is a very nice combination.

Overall the food is not bad. Limited but tasty and filling. But the service is very bad especially for a five star hotel. As there is a 15% discount for online reservation, I am surprised to receive the bill without the discount. I have to remind the staff about it. I am very disappointed.

A very tiny restaurant OK Jul 07, 2014
Categories : Russian | Restaurant

Today I meet up with friends at this Russian restaurant. The restaurant is located in YESS Centre which is across the street from Haw Par Villa. The restaurant is owned by a couple called Chef Rinat and Deborah who are always there to personally take care of their guests.

The restaurant is quite small, and sits about 30 people. The restaurant serves authentic one of a kind Russian cuisine.

There is also a number of cute little decoration items from Russia.

The menu has reasonable range of food which mostly are unknown to me.

Russian tea ($5.90++/ pot)
Served in a beautiful pot, it has a nice and lemony taste.

Country style potato ($7+)
baby potato with dill
The potato is soft and well flavoured.

Pork Julienne ($16.90+)
Pork & potato cubes in savoury cream cheese sauce, seasonal vegetables
The pork is quite tender and flavourful.

Lamb Shashlik ($18.90+)
Grilled Lamb marinated in chef's special spices
The meat is a bit tough and serving looks a bit small too.

Plov ($14.90+)
Lamb Rice
The rice tastes like the steam char siew rice type from the steamed pau stall. Long grain type but flavourful. Serving looks much smaller than what is shown on menu.

Creamy Double Fish ($16.90+)
Salmon & dory fish with potato slices and cream cheese sauce baked to perfection
Interestingly this dish takes the longest to be served, but serving is the biggest among the 4 main courses. It is served in a thin baking tray. The fish soaks up the creamy sauce flavour very well.

When asked for the bill, I am surprised to receive it in a basket. It is an interesting experience to dine in here. Quite a cozy place with great service from the staffs.

Food Tasting Smile Jul 04, 2014

Categories : Korean | Kids-Friendly

"Celebrity Chef Choi In Sun from Chef's Noodle will be coming to Singapore during the last week of June 2014. We would like to invite you to a dine with Chef Choi event on 29th June 12.30pm to 3pm at Jurong Point Shopping Centre." When I received the message, I was so surprised. Of course I replied that I will be coming. Chef’s Noodle Singapore is officially opened on 5th April at HarbourFront Centre, serving Korean - Japanese dishes with a modern fusion twist. It origins from South Korea, with the menu items each individually and personally ‘crafted’ by a South Korea’s Chef Personality – Chef Choi.

Each of us is given a discount voucher at the registration counter. A few lucky ones even get extra when they sit at the lucky tables.

The restaurant is quite big in space, as it takes over the space of a seafood restaurant called Pioneer Wharf 百盛海鲜酒楼. The place is decorated in light and wooden tones.

Ice Rubus Tea ($4.90)
We are offered this upon seated at the table. Refreshing but tastes like Ribena to me.

The Chef Choi In Sun starts the event with a cooking demonstration on Chef's Bulchobap (Sparkling Fire Sushi). The skillfulness in slicing the beef to shaping the rice to torching the thin slices of meat on the balls of sushi rice. It is a spectator sight to see the real guy in action.
Made by the chef owner himself

Made by the chef owner himself

I am lucky to get a taste of the sushi made by the chef himself and fed by the chef himself. It tastes simple melt in the mouth. Besides the original, it is served topped with 3 different sauces : sesame sauce, chilli sauce and garlic-mayonnaise sauce. It is served with wasabi dipping sauce which is quite watery and light in taste with a slight hint of wasabi.

Next we are shown a demonstration by the chef in eating Chef's Guksoo the Korean style. It seems that the correct way to put a bit of everything into the spoon and fill the spoon with soup. It is quite interesting to know that korean guys tends to eat with the bowl next to the mouth and loudly too.

Steamer Basket of Buchu Saeu Twigim, Mandu Twigim, and Gamja Goroke, served with Wasabi dipping sauce.
Buchu Saeu Twigim ($6.90) is actually Chives And Shrimps Fritter which is a popular street food. A light batter to coat the marinated chives and dried shrimps before sending in for deep-frying to give that crackling crunch. It is dusted with light curry powder to give that robust flavour before serving. It is very crunchy and big in size, but quite oily too. Best break it into pieces first before eating.
Mandu Twigim ($5.90) is actually Deep-fried Seafood Dumplings. Crispy on the outside, it is quite juicy inside.
Gamja Goroke is actually Deep-fried Croquettes and which is a popular street food. It is made of potato and yam paste, which is why it tastes savoury-sweet.

For appetiser : we have of a choice of Chef's Bulchobap (Sparkling Fire Sushi) and Bossam (Pork Belly Wrap).

Chef's Bulchobap (Sparkling Fire Sushi) ($6.90)
Sushi rice ball, topped with a slice of marbled Wagyu Beef, glazed with a coat of sweetened Bulchobap sauce and flambe over a torch of fire to grill the meat. Tastes quite smooth but it is a great different from the one made by the chef himself and do not have melt in the mouth texture.

For the mains, we have a choice of Chef's Guksoo , Daehan Deopbap and Chef's Bibim Guksoo (Signature Pork Bulgogi Dried Noodles).

Chef's Guksoo (Signature Chef's Noodle)
Soft textured noodles in concentrated, savoury- sweet flavoured beef broth (Chef’s Guksoo) that comes with a tinge of slight peppery aftertaste. To add depth to the broth, topped with a slowly stewed Pork Bulgogi, and a healthy dose of fresh vegetable granishes. The soup is quite flavourful that one cannot taste that it is actually beef broth. The noodle looks like wanton mee but in a softer version. The dish is topped with beancurd puff, chives, egg roll, 3 coloured roll (Koreans usually eat this during special festival) and Pork Bulgogi. The egg roll is quite soft and fluffy like a sponge cake. Someone asks the chef about the making of the egg roll but he refuses to disclose, except that it is made in korean style. The pork is quite tender and flavourful. The 3 coloured roll is made of 3 items (think it looks like rice cake, crab stick, and green chilli) deep fried in batter.

Daehan Deopbap (Signature Korean-styled Rice Tub) ($12.90)
It is actually Deep-fried Stuffed Pepper Rice. The pepper is deep fried in tempura style and does not taste spicy. Kind of reminds me of Yong Tau Foo. Another interesting item in this dish is the octopus patty, which looks simple brown but tastes crunchy. It also has the sweet and fluffy egg roll as well as the 3 coloured roll in it. Other then that, it is Bibimbap served in a wooden tub. Tasty but I prefer Bibimbap served hot in the stone pot.

Overall the food is delicious but we are too full to finish all. Nice place and just next to the MRT station.
