Dinner Smile Jun 29, 2014

Tony Roma's started in 1972 in North Miami. The restaurant is known for its ribs. Currently it has outlets in 27 countries. In Singapore, there is 2 outlets - Orchard Central and Suntec City. The orchard central outlet is decorated in a US diner style with its wooden furniture and booth seats.

After placing order, cultery are placed on the table. I like that the knife and fork are wrapped in a holder, something which one seldom see these days.

A loaf of piping hot and soft bread is served with garlic butter. Cute having the bread served in a cone shaped paper wrap.

Appetizer Sampler ($18.90++)
The dish is consists of Spicy BBQ Boneless Bites, Potato Skins and Mozzarella Sticks with sour cream and marinara sauce. I like the Potato Skin which is thin and cheesy. Topped with sour cream, it tastes even better. The Mozzarella Stick is also very good with the huge amount of soft chewy cheese filling inside. But Spicy BBQ Boneless Bites is a disappointment with its over sourness taste.

Ribeye Steak and Rib Combo ($38.90++)
The dish is served with two choices of cole slaw, baked potato, mashed potatoes, french fries, ranch style beans, rice, broccoli or corn on the cob. The mashed potatoes is very tasty as the onions inside the mashed enhances its taste. Topped with cheese, bacon and chives, it tastes even better. The broccoli is well cooked and is a great choice since it is a superfood. The rib is very tender and juicy. But the steak is a bit tough and has quite a bit of fatty parts.

Currently there is a Standered Chartered credit card promotion where a jar of soft drink costs $10 with a order of steak combo. The jar is quite huge and between the 2 of us, we cannot finish the drink.

Overall the food is quite filling and tasty. Service is great too. Although it is 10.30pm (way pass the closing time which 10pm), the staffs do not make us feel pressured to leave the place.

New outlet in the mall Smile Jun 28, 2014

Categories : Noodles

Recently Tung Lok has replaced its outlet at Orchard Central with a new casual eatery offering hearty noodles and piping hot dumplings called 'Noodles Stories'. The outlet has several promotions at the moment such as 6 pices of the delicious Jiaozi at only $2++ on Monday (Usual Price $6++), and $10++ Value Set Meals from Mondays to Thursdays.

The restaurant is decorated in a modern and simple way with red and black chairs.

Looking at the menu, the menu has reasonable priced items from dim sum to noodles, with the most expensive item at $13.80++ which is the Fried Rice in XO sauce. The menu also has a range of individual set meal too, priced from $12.80++ to $16.80++.

I decide on the Super Value Set B Meal which costs $16.80++. The meal consists of Pork and Cabbage 'Guo Tie'/ Shrimp, Pork and Chives 'Guo Tie' with Soya Bean Sauce, Beijing Salad, Double-boiled Chicken Soup with Ginseng, and Deep-fried Five-spiced Pork Rolls. The serving is quite huge and I am quite surprised.

Pork and Cabbage 'Guo Tie'/ Shrimp, Pork and Chives 'Guo Tie' with Soya Bean Sauce 白菜猪肉锅贴/三鲜锅贴伴芝麻面谱酱
It is my first time having Guo Tie with Soya Bean Sauce. I always feel that soya bean sauce has a very rather strong taste as it is made of fermented soya beans. But it is not so here. The sauce reminds me of a thick cream sauce. It tastes quite well with the Guo Tie. The Guo Tie has quite thin skin and filled with juicy and crunchy filling.

Beijing Salad 谱大拌菜
It is a mixture of greens, cherry tomatoes, orange, raspberries and pomelo in soya sauce dressing. It tasted light and tasty.

Double-boiled Chicken Soup with Ginseng 人参炖鸡汤
The soup is full of flavour. The chicken is very tender, with tender and soft dry scallop at the bottom.

Deep-fried Five-spiced Pork Rolls 五香肉卷
I am a bit disappointed at the roll is served cold and dry, but the texture is not bad as it is quite crunchy.

Overall the food is not bad. Water is refilled regularly. However the place seems a bit cold and empty with only 4 tables occupied throughout the night.

Brunch Smile Jun 23, 2014

Categories : Bars/Lounges | Café

Jewel Coffee is started about 3 years ago with its first outlet at the Shenton Way. The second outlet is at Rangoon Road, with a third one coming up. The Rangoon Road outlet is 2 levels high, with both indoor and outdoor dine in area.

The cafe is decorated in a very modern and minimalist look with menu boards by the walls. Today we have a early morning public cupping session at the cafe, where we learn about smelling and tasting of 3 different types of coffee.

We have the session at the bar counter at the second level. It is quite interesting as the coffee smells differently when in dry powder form and when added with hot water.

After the session, we decide to stay for brunch too. By 10am, the cafe is actually packed with some tables having the reserved signs on. We end up sharing the main huge table in front of the counter with others.

Egg Royale ($16++)
English muffin with smoked salmon & poached egg gratinated with Hollandaise sauce.
It is quite a great combination. The salmon is not too salty and goes well with the lightly crispy muffin.

Ricotta Pancakes ($14++)
with caramelised banana, strawberry or blueberry & lemon zested mascarpone
The pancake is quite soft and fluffy. When taking order, the staff even asks if we only want selected fruits on the pancake. Quite thoughful.

The Gibraltar ($5.50++)
A Gibraltar is really just a tiny latte, served in a shot glass - double espresso, milk, and a bit of foam. It tastes very thick and strong, really makes me light up.

Special Breakfast Tea ($5++)
The tea on the other hand is quite bitter in taste.

Overall the food is not bad. It is interesting that such a out of the way place is so happening. It is packed for such an early hour.

Yummy Lunch Smile Jun 17, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

I am attracted by its delicious looking lunch set display outside the restaurant and decide to stop here for lunch. The restaurant is decorated in traditional Japanese way. Most customers prefer to sit at the counter as one could see the chef at work.

There is also dine in area but we are show to a private room which sit about 20 persons.

Nigiri Umi ($20++)
The main dish of this meal is the Tofu burg which is a patty made of tofu and assorted vegetables, topped with assorted mushrooms and brown sauce.

The patty is quite tasty and I could not taste that it is tofu at first bite. It is served with salad, chawamushi, assorted sushi, soup and fruit.

The sushi and maki taste quite fresh and moist. Well made. I could feel the fish melt in my mouth.

The soup is full of flavours and has chunks of salmon in it.

Chicken Katsudon Set ($23++)
The set comes with pickles, soup, salad and fruit. For the Katsudon, the chicken is quite juicy and the egg is moist and not overcooked.
Squid Tempura

Suruten ($15++)
This is actually Squid Tempura, which tastes crunchy and QQ in texture.

Okosama Set ($10++)
This is the Kid's meal which is ordered for little JJ. It comes with a cup of orange juice. There is a lot of items in this small meal, such as assorted sushi, fried chicken, fried prawn, french fries and fruit. The staff even asks if one need wasabi in the sushi. The serving is more than enough for little JJ.

On the table, there is Sashimi Sauce and Sushi Sauce to dip the food with. I have tried both but feel not much different between the 2 kinds of sauces.

Overall it is a very nice meal with great food at reasonable prices. Service is great too, with tea refills regularly and staffs are quite friendly too.

Family Dinner OK Jun 07, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Seafood

Tonight the family has dinner at this restaurant. As the indoor aircon dining area is full, we are seated in 2 tables in non aircon area under the row of fans. Quite cooling.

We start the meal with Cold Crabs. Special cutlery is provided. It is full of roe. Goes quite well with the vinegar dip. Not quite the dish for me as I do not like to use my bare hands.

Next we have the Peking Duck. The sliced skin is served wrapped in crepes, with cucumber and spring onion served on the side. Remember to spread some of the sweet sauce on the crepe and add some cucumber and spring onion before eating. Tastes not bad, but would like the skin to be crispier.

Next is a plate of stir fried greens which I feel is abit too oily but still quite crunchy.

For soup, we are served invidual serving of shark's fin with bean sprouts and coriander on the side. Barely tastes any of the shark's fin.

Next we have one of the signature dishes which is the Steamed Bamboo Clam with Minced Garlic. Have a bit of problems when deciding which cutlery to use as there is fork, knife, spoon and chopsticks. In end uses fork and knife. Like it that there is glass noodle which soaks up the clam's flavours.

Next we have Steamed Cod which is quite juicy with barely any bones.

This is followed with Braised Duck with Cabbage and Bamboo Shoot. The leftover of the peking duck is used in this dish. Looks spicy and doe not tastes spicy. The vegetable is very flavourful and well braised.

Next is the Stir Fried Lobster with Garlic. Simple but the meat tends to stick onto the shells.

Spinach in Stocks looks like a simple and healthy dish with its assorted mushrooms, carrots and minced pork. Letdown by the funny taste of the canned mushrooms.

Next is the Fried Ee Fu Mian which is simple with some vegetables, but a funny sandy texture.
For dessert, we have

Green Bean Soup with Kelp
Quite unique with the small pieces of seaweed in this dessert.

Yam Paste
Not bad, but seeds are not removed from the gingko nuts found in the dessert.

Also have a serving of Steamed Chicken for takeaway as we have ordered a bit too much and cannot finish the meal. The chicken tastes quite juicy and goes quite well with the minced garlic sauce that served with it.
Overall food is not bad. Service is great with plates changed often and tea refilled often. There valet parking available too, so one does not have to waste time to find parking lot.
