Weekday dinner at ma maison OK Mar 20, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : French | Japanese | Fusion

Ma maison is a fusion between french and western cuisine. Even though it was a weekday night, the queue was still very long. We waited for more than 45 mins to be seated even though we started queueing at 630pm. So be sure to start queueing earlier if you dont want to queue.

Main courses cost around 15-20 dollars each, and portions are very small here. In fact after dinner at ma maison, we had to proceed to the food court at bugis to continue eating. We tried several steak dishes, none of which were particularly impressive. Service was quite slow and the food took very long to be served, which, considering the long queue outside, should have been quicker.

Overall I found ma maison not value for money, though the long queue suggests otherwise

Spending per head: Approximately $20(Dinner)

Quick lunch at putien OK Mar 20, 2012
Categories : Fujian/Heng Hwa | Seafood

There was a new appetizer at putien today. It was really weird - i thought it tasted like chopped honey dew in F&N syrup. It tasted fine for the first few pieces but subsequently became really difficult to continue eating because it was really sweet, and really weird.

Since we wanted a quick light lunch, i guess we should not have gone to putien because we only ordered a fried heng hwa bee hoon ($15.90 for a serving size big enough for 2 persons to share) and the waitress was very unimpressed with the fact that we only ordered that 1 dish.

Otherwise, it was a really great meal. The noodles were chopped into very small pieces which gave it a "melt in the mouth" texture and the fried seaweed sprinkled ontop remained crispy even after a long while. I wished we had more seaweed and nuts in the dish though.

Recommended Dish(es):  fried heng hwa bee hoon

Spending per head: Approximately $15.90(Lunch)

Breakfast at KFC OK Mar 20, 2012
Categories : American | Fast Food | Halal

After queueing up for the new ipad, we went to KFC for their breakfast set. I ordered a porridge breakfast set which consists of chicken porridge and tea for $3.60.

At 10 plus i expected a larger crowd, however, business was rather quiet that day and there were seats aplenty. Most of the other patrons were elderly couples or young children and their mothers.

The porridge was a little bit too sweet and we had to empty a whole packet of pepper in it to mask the sweet taste. Despite misgivings about the chicken inside the porridge (i was told its made from last night's left over popcorn chicken), i thought it wasn't that bad afterall.

Spending per head: Approximately $4(Breakfast)

Putien cold dishes Smile Sep 30, 2011
Categories : Fujian/Heng Hwa | Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood

This time round at Putien i tried out their cold dishes such as cold jelly fish head, drunken chicken and braised salted duck.

The cold jelly fish head was crunchy and sweet, unlike other restaurants whereby the jelly fish slices then to me slimy and tasteless. The drunken chicken had a very strong herbal taste to it - which is an acquired taste so its not suitable for everybody. The braised salted duck was thinly sliced and well marinated, but it could have been a little more juicy. Other dishes we had were the putien style century egg which is basically fried century egg spammed sweet sauce. I don't normally like century egg but this one was great, i loved the sweet sauce on the batter.

Beef Sukiyaki Smile Sep 30, 2011
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Sushi/Sashimi

Ichiban sushi at Jurong Point's basement japanese food street perpetually has a very long que outside, even on weekdays. We arrived at 6pm hoping to beat the evening crowd on a thursday and ended up waiting for more than half an hour.

I ordered a beef sukiyaki and my friend ordered a chicken sukiyaki. i found the beef sukiyaki better because the soup was sweeter and tastier. The set comes with vegetables, tofu, mushrooms, rice, egg and thin beef slices, all of which you will cook for yourself over the fire. Try to cook the beef slices soon because once the fire extinguises, its a hassle to get the staff to bring the tray back in to light the fire again.
