Hip DRIPS Smile Nov 08, 2011
Categories : Bakery | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Brunch

Tiong Bahru has just sprouted another chic cafe with good food and coffee. The slew of new cafes like Forty Hands, Orange Thimble, Open Door Policy and now Drips bodes well for this ultra-hip area which is achingly nostalgic with its old-style residences and to-die-for local fare.

The interior of Drips is bright and welcoming, with a skylight running down the back of the cafe. The furniture is so retro, hip and well-made that I felt like buying it off them! I just settled comfortably into one of the sofa seats and tucked into my lovely croissant.

The food at the cafe is made by former Shangri-La pastry chef, Alfred Chan, and what a delight to have gorgeous food in a nice setting smile

The Fig Croissant was ABSOLUTELY LOVELY!!! The fig was fresh and glazed delicately over the croissant. It's a pity the croissant was not as crispy as I expected but you can't have a crispy croissant and fresh fruit topping together wihtout sacrificing one or the other.

The Iced Chocolate was very well made with the right amount of chocolate syrup, milk and ice. I didn't feel that it was overly sweet or chocolatey.

A great, relaxing way to spend the morning with good food and good friends smile

Delicious Ayam Penyet Smile Aug 24, 2011

Ayam Penyet

Ayam Penyet

What is there not to like about rice with crispy fragrant chicken accompanied by lime and shiok sambal, delicious succulent fried tempeh, fishcakes and beancurd, thick chunks of cucumbers and lettuce and a generous serving of soup (Picture not shown) to finish off the meal?

This remains one of my all-time favourites when I visit the ABC market. It's even nicer when you eat there and it is presented on a banana leaf in a wooden plate and you have the soup piping hot.

A delicious complete meal in itself smile

Paper Dosai Smile Aug 24, 2011   (Related Review)

Paper Dosai

Paper Dosai

Aahhhh.......tongue Light, airy Paper Dosai that is substantial but not enough to make you feel jelak even after eating 2 pieces.

The crisps bits and crepe-like texture make this dish so delightful that I almost always eat the same thing when I come to Ghim Moh market.

The accompanying vegetable, tomato and plain coconut curry is a great play on the palate as it takes you from tartness to sweetness and to some crunchiness as you bite into the coconut bits.

Kudos to Letchmi and her team of sisters who consistently churn out great Dosai day-by-day to the hungry breakfast crowds.

Egg Appam

Egg Appam

I am great fan of Indian cuisine but frankly this is one of the rare stalls that still sell the traditional South Indian Appam. It is essentially made with the same batter (Coconut milk, flour, water, sugar) as Dosai but is thicker towards the centre and crispy at the edges.

The Egg Appam featured here is Amazing!!! The yolk is just set so but not runny and the edges of the Appam cooked till crispy but not burnt. The fresh Coconut accompanying it is subtle and moist and the orange sugar adds a hint of sweetness (of course, you do not drown your Appam with the sugar!) to this great breakfast dish.

This is truly satisfying smile

My Comfort Food - Fish Soup Smile Oct 02, 2011

Fish Soup and Rice

Fish Soup and Rice

When all other food choices fail, I invariably turn to Fish Soup as my comfort food.

What better way to coax the tummy than with a bowl of steaming hot flavourful soup that is chockful of healthy ingredients - Fish slices, Tofu, Wongbok, Caixin, Tomatoes, Ikan Bilis.

The spoon was never devoid of ingredients whenever I scooped some soup up and it just goes to show the generosity of the cook.
