Coffeeshop French Cuisine Smile Nov 08, 2011

Categories : French | European | Coffeeshop | Kids-Friendly

It's one of my husband's quest to try newly-opened food joints that have been recommended to us. So, we were off to this coffee shop in Queen Street looking for this French food stall one evening and was rewarded by good food.

The place was nothing to shout about being in a coffee shop but the stall was well-patronised, so much so that the Stuffed Chicken Roulade was sold out when we placed our order.

The Mushroom Linguine was subtly flavoured by the variety of mushrooms and the pasta was al dente to the bite.

The Duck Confit Salad was refreshing with tender duck meat and light vinegarette drizzled on the vegetables.

Aahh...the Short Ribs was something...the meat literally melted in my mouth and the red wine gravy that accompanied it was so tasty and we demolished every drop of it with the comforting buttery mash potato. Bliss smile

Hip DRIPS Smile Nov 08, 2011
Categories : Bakery | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Brunch

Tiong Bahru has just sprouted another chic cafe with good food and coffee. The slew of new cafes like Forty Hands, Orange Thimble, Open Door Policy and now Drips bodes well for this ultra-hip area which is achingly nostalgic with its old-style residences and to-die-for local fare.

The interior of Drips is bright and welcoming, with a skylight running down the back of the cafe. The furniture is so retro, hip and well-made that I felt like buying it off them! I just settled comfortably into one of the sofa seats and tucked into my lovely croissant.

The food at the cafe is made by former Shangri-La pastry chef, Alfred Chan, and what a delight to have gorgeous food in a nice setting smile

The Fig Croissant was ABSOLUTELY LOVELY!!! The fig was fresh and glazed delicately over the croissant. It's a pity the croissant was not as crispy as I expected but you can't have a crispy croissant and fresh fruit topping together wihtout sacrificing one or the other.

The Iced Chocolate was very well made with the right amount of chocolate syrup, milk and ice. I didn't feel that it was overly sweet or chocolatey.

A great, relaxing way to spend the morning with good food and good friends smile

Bittergourd Fish Soup with Egg Smile Sep 26, 2011

Fish Soup with Bittergourd

Fish Soup with Bittergourd

Holland Village is my regular haunt if I do not feel like going far in search of a meal.

I have always patronised the Food Centre not because it is known for good food, but because it is convenient and affordable. In fact, I think the stallholders here do not need to make a particular effort to up their cooking skills as there is a large number of expatriates who do not know whether there is 'wok hei' in their sweet & sour fish.

Despite a lack of outstanding food stalls, I chanced upon the Bittergourd Fish Soup at Da Hua Food stall.

The soup came with a generous amount of bittergourd and carrots, and a decent number of Toman fish slices. They added beaten egg into their soup and this made it texturally interesting and the overall taste was quite good. It also looked quite 'homemade' to have the egg strands floating around tongue

Aaahhh.....My mouth is watering as I am writing this review tongue
This is one of the Best and Freshest bun shop EVER!

The Empress Road branch, which I am reviewing here, opens as early as 6am to feed the hungry bellies of the breakfast crowd of workers and students with their freshly baked goodies. And if you are not an early worm, you may not catch these wonderful creations as the stall closes by 11.30am.

All the buns are about 60-80cents depending on filling and they are seriously pillowy soft.
If you happen to catch the Butter Buns fresh out of the oven, you can taste the cube of butter melting into your mouth as you bite through the bun and the slight saltiness of it juxtaposes nicely with the sugar sprinkled on top of the bun.

My children loves the Kaya and Cheese buns for the generous fillings in them. My friend's son say that the Chicken Floss buns are the best he has ever tried. The Banana Custard bun has fresh banana in it with a mildly sweet custard but is not always available. I tried the mini Chocolate Muffins and they were a chocoholic's delight with an intense chocolate flavour. Everything here is worth trying!

They also have seasonal goodies like the cookies during Chinese New Year and Hot Cross Buns during Easter.

Though they call themselves 'The Fresh Bread Shop', there are no bread loaves/slices for sale...

It helps that I have the owner's mobile on speed-dial as I can easily reserve 4 boxes of 10 pcs to feed my hungry hordes at home smile

Family-friendly restaurants are hard to find in Singapore but Seb's Bistro has come up with a wonderful concept for harried parents needing some time off.

Imagine an old coloniall Black-and-White bungalow done up into The Playhouse (as it is known) for children (up to 12) to be safely entertained and occupied for a fee, while parents enjoy a relaxing meal or have drinks with friends...Bliss...(sigh)

The food here is nothing fantastic but it is tolerable though pricey.

My husband had the Quail stuffed with Rice and Chestnuts and it was the most interesting item for lunch that day. The quail tasted gamey but it was well-roasted and the stuffing still moist.

My oldest girl chose to have the Open-Face Smoked Salmon Sandwich with Guacamole and this was very well done with a generous portion of Salmon.

There is a good selection of items on the Kid's Menu and for $15, they'll get a main dish, drink and a scoop of ice-cream.

My 2 younger kids had the Macaroni Cheese (so-so) and the Cottage Pie with beef which fared better.

I went for the Prawn Aglio Olio and the dish was a bit dry but the prawns were succulent. It would do better with a good douse of olive oil.

Lastly, I finished off the meal with a Rhubarb Crumble with Vanila Ice-Cream (sorry, I forgot to take a picture as it was so yummy and I just dived right into it tongue). This was the most delicious lunch item. Rhubarb is hard to come by in Singapore but Seb's Bistro was generous in its serving. The crumble was fragrant with butter and well-toasted and the Rhubarb was just lightly sweetened and well-complemented by the vanila ice-cream tongue

Um-mmm....
