Shokado sets Smile Jan 28, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Restaurant

Shimbashi Soba is a delicate restaurant that specialized in Soba. You could definitely expect a very good quality soba from them. They serve a variety of cold and warn soba, one would find themselves very impressed, just like us. We both ordered Shokado set. For Shokado set A ($22.90), you will get a bowl of cold handmade soba (or warm soba if you'd like) with assorted vegetables, salmon and kajiki sashimi, assorted sushi, sweet young corn and egg omelette with mentaiko sauce, as well as chawanmushi. Very colourful!

Of all dishes in the set, my favourite has to be the egg omelette with mentaiko sauce! It has a layered texture, very satisfying when you chew it, and the slightly sweet flavour matches so well with the creamy mentaiko sauce! It's so much going on in the mouthful.

The sashimi is fresh, and the natural seafood sweetness is tasty.

Chawanmushi might not have as much seafood as I wish, but still, the silky texture of the steamed egg is pleasantly good. There are a few pieces of flavourful chicken at the bottom of the chawanmushi. Lovely taste.

Shokado set B ($21.90), on the other hand, consists of a bowl of warm handmade soba with corn and beancurd skin, salmon in ginger sauce, prawn salad with tartar sauce, green mussel topped with miso paste, and the chawanmushi.

I really enjoy eating the warm soba! The broth is simple and light, only had a hint of shoyu flavour, but good enough as in you get to taste the grain fragrant of the soba. The texture of the soba is very good too, not soggy at all. Love it!

Salmon in ginger sauce is surprisingly good. The skin of the salmon is crisp, and the ginger sauce is slightly sweet with a hint of ginger flavour, very appetizing!

Each set comes with a serving of dessert of the day, which is the green tea mochi. The chewy texture glutinous pieces has a rich green tea flavour, and a dash of finely grated peanuts coated outside. Taste quite bland I reckon. Not a fans of it.

Soya beancurd Smile Jan 28, 2013

Categories : Fusion | Food Court

I guess there are more and more 'contemperory' beancurd dessert (tau hui) these days, for a good reason. This kind of beancurd dessert has an amazing texture, which lies in between the texture of pudding and traditional beancurd dessert. Once you have a bite on it, it sort of just melted in your mouth and turns watery. Very syiok indeed. There are many different flavours of the beancurd dessert, honeydew, berries, just to name a few. The one that I had the other day is the original ($1.50), which you get a strong natural flavour of soy beans. It's a good chilling afternoon snacks for sure.

Dim Sum Smile Jan 28, 2013
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Teochew | Dim Sum | Seafood

Swatow Seafood Restaurant offers ala carte Dimsum from 8am to 3pm I think, and high tea buffet starts at 3pm, where adult pays $22.80++ (weekends) for all-you-can-eat dimsum. We went for the ala carte dimsum, and totally satisfied with the food quality. My favourite have to be the prawn dumpling (har gao), $4 per serving of three. The prawn filling is generously huge, the prawn is so fresh and crunchy, what's more, the juice is savoury and tastes sesame oil aroma. Thumbs up!

beancurd skin roll is not bad too. The sheet roll is filled with minced meat and prawn, and simmered in the rich oyster sauce. The roll absorbed the flavourful gravy, love the juiciness when you bite on it.

The prawn rice roll is a bit disappointing though. The rice roll is kind of too thick, the soy sauce gravy is alright, but the prawn inside is tasteless! It would be so much better if prawns are marinated before put in the rice roll.

We also ordered another type of dumpling, which I don't actually know the name. It has the yummy prawn filling as well, with the additional dried scallop topping, more luxury and savoury in a sense. Yummy!

Char siew pastry is another recommended dimsum. The char siew filling is sweet and thick, together with buttery pastry, awesome combination with pleasant taste. Love the hint of sesame fragrant too.

The salted egg custard bun is quite good. Watch out when you have it, the runny filling might turn out pretty messy. The savoury of the salted egg yolk, butter and sugar is sinfully good.

One could also order the ala carte dishes from the meal menu after 11am. We had the oyster omelette ($15). The oyster is served separately in the spicy sauce, which is fantastic, as it won't make the crispy batter turns soggy.

Remember to eat the oyster omelette with the chilli dip and fish sauce, which definitely enhances the whole flavour by heaps!

Lunch at Putien Smile Jan 28, 2013

Categories : Fujian/Heng Hwa | Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood

It's my first visit to Putien City Square outlet. I'm impressed by the brightness of the restaurant, and getting the window seats is a bonus where we could view the street scene while dining. Putien oyster omelet - small ($16.90) is good as usual. The oysters are finely chopped and mixed with the batter before deep-fried to crisp. It's so crispy and nice to bite on.

Shredded meat with bun ($7.80) is a little bit of work where you need to put the food together on your own, but fun! The homemade golden sesame bun is superb and fragrantly good. The tender shredded meat is cooked with lots of onion slices in a thick sweet sauce. Love the taste.

Deep-fried duck with yam ($15.90) is slightly disappointing though. The yam block is filled with duck and it's deep-fried. It's so greasy that the yam kind of stuck on the oil paper, not impressed. Taste wise, it's just so-so.

Fried noodle (mee sua) - small ($6.90) is my all time favourite! It's so delicious, and most importantly the texture of mee sua doesn't turn soggy but fully absorbed the flavour of the gravy! A must have!

Savoury crepes OK Jan 27, 2013
Categories : European | Restaurant | Pasta

This eatery constantly has long waiting queue, mainly because the food served here are good for proper meal, as well as for snacks. We tried two of teh signature savoury crepes. Thai basil pork fillet ($15.50) is good! The well-marinated pork is tender and tasty, stir-fried with basil, chilli, garlic, oyster sauce and young corn, good flavour!

Korean BBQ pork ($14.50) is good too if you like something spicy and with strong flavour. The flavoured pork is cooked with Korean chilli paste, served with kimchi, slightly sour and appetizing.

Tiramisu crepes is served with a big scoop of Espresso ice-cream on top. To me, it tastes Ok at first, yet getting too much at the end caused by the cream filling.

The Old style rum and raisin is quite unique in taste. The caramelized apples wrapped in vanilla crepe with rum, finally topped with raisin ice-cream, syiok!
