Wanton Mee OK Jan 27, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

There are quite a few stalls at this hawker centre that sell Wanton Noodles, one of the most famous hawker food in Singapore. One of my favourite stall has to be Xi Ji, for their dumpling noodles ($3). The char siew is made from lean meat, the dark sauce of the noodles is a mixture of soy sauce and oyster sauce (different from the one used for minced meat noodles).

I like the dumpling, it's huge with lots of filling, which consists of well-seasoned minced meat, water chestnut, black fungus etc. Tasty!

Stir-fried chicken salad noodles OK Jan 25, 2013

Categories : Vietnamese | Food Court

The Vietnamese stall is probably one of the most favourite stall in Mensa canteen, which you would always see a long queue during lunch rush. They offer a variety of Vietnamese noodles and dishes, such as Pho, beef noodles, just to name a few. Do check out their special of the day, which might not be listed on the menu. I tried their fried chicken salad noodles ($2.80). It's quite a good combination, where you get thick vermicelli topped with lots of chopped lettuce and raw bean sprouts, and drizzled in fish sauce and sweet chilli kind of gravy. Finally, the noodles is topped with generous amount of chicken pieces. I like the combination, but I reckon the chicken is too heavy-seasoned, and slightly too salty for me to handle.

Just Ok OK Jan 25, 2013
Categories : Thai | Restaurant | Seafood | Kids-Friendly

It was my first visit to Siam Kitchen, so I just ordered the chef's recommended dishes that have the signature thumbs on the menu. Upon ordered the food, the waitress served the prawn crackers to the table. The crackers very crispy and savoury, one can get really addicted to it! Yummy!

First I had the Fish maw soup served with crabmeat ($7.60), though it's the signature dish, but it's totally not my favourite! It's starchy which still acceptable, but what's weird is, it has this funny sweet after taste.

The stir-fried kailan with salted fish is Ok. Well, it's just the normal stir-fried vegetables that you could get from any restaurant I assume. Phad Thai rice noodle seafood ($10.50) tastes Ok, the texture of the rice noodles very well-done though. Apart from the rice noodles, Pad Thai here also have the glass noodle option, which I guess worth to try.

Fresh seafood Smile Jan 25, 2013

Tung Lok group owns quite a number of restaurant, and the one that we went this time is specialized in Seafood! We started of having the Oyster ($3.80/piece) as starter. We choose to have it crisp-fried with salted pepper. Delicious! You get this crispy layer on the outside, but once you bite in, the inner bit is the fat and fresh oyster that is so juicy. One can also have their oysters raw, or steamed with garlic, or even oven-baked with cheese. Your choice!

Steamed Razon clam ($10/pcs) is another must-have I reckon. We had it steamed with spicy XO sauce and vermicelli. The clam is fresh and huge, good chewy texture. The sauce is fantastic and fully abosorbed by the vermicelli, which made it very flavourful. Thumbs up. You can also choose to steam the clam with garlic only if you can't take spicy food.

Fish maw bisque ($8) is so rich in flavour, and the broth has this collegen kind of stickiness. The generous amount of fish maw in the soup gives a good bite texture. Love the sweetness of it.

We then have the Deep-fried prawns with wasabi-mayo sauce! The big peeled prawns are so crunchy and springy. They are slightly deep-fried before coated with the tangy wasabi-mayo sauce. Very delicious and of good balanced flavour, neither too 'spicy' nor salty. This signature dish goes well with rice or simply delicious to be consumed as snacks.

Mee goreng ($18) is slightly greasy for me, the portion is huge and it's kind of spicy. Nothing too special in terms of taste though.

Dessert wise, we had the Yam paste with gingko nuts served in young coconut. Well, the restaurant ran out of coconut that day, and hence our yam paste is just served in the bowl. For that reason, we are charged $5 only instead of the usual $8. Love the smooth texture of the yam paste, it also has strong yam fragrant, pleasantly good!

Weekend Breakfast OK Jan 25, 2013
Categories : American | Steaks and Grills | Kids-Friendly

The Cafe Cartel serves breakfast sets with free flow of tea/coffee during weekends and public holidays, from about 8:30am till 11:30am. Upon order the meal, I was served a mini sweet bun, and my coffee is nowhere seen . I have to literally request for coffee.

After a short while, coffee is served. It tastes Ok, and the staffs will go around refilling the drink when they see empty cup (not self-service like fast-food chain).

I waited half an hour or so for my Ultimate delight ($7.50++), which includes the egg, chicken hotdogs, a pancake and two French toasts. The scrambled egg is alright, quite moist, chicken hotdog is good. Frech toast is a not toasted enough, and the pancake is quite dry as a whole, as no butter or syrup is being served.
