Well-executed Delicious Food Smile Aug 16, 2013

I was one of the lucky OpenRicers to join the OpenRice team for the food tasting at Gourmet Plus. Before the food tasting session, i had a look at their official website (http://www.gourmetplus.com.sg) so that i am more aware of what i would be having beforehand. I was very thrilled to know that they were started in 2004 and offers a tempting selection of French, Italian, German and European fare. I felt very certain that it would be a real delectable 'tastebud-opener' for me and it sure was! We had a very filling 10-course dinner and i will just review on those dishes that i felt was really unforgettable for me to avoid being too lengthy and draggy.mad
Gilda on shot gazpacho

Gilda on shot gazpacho

Our first course was Gilda on shot Gazpacho, or skewer of marinated olive, chili, antxoas & baby onion in classic gazpacho soup in shot glass. The gazpacho is basically a cold tomato based soup which is very healthy and has a natural sweet flavour. Pairing it with the skewer really refreshes my tastebud and opened up my appetite for the following courses ahead.tongue
Squid-ink coated calamari el bulli with aioli

Squid-ink coated calamari el bulli with aioli

Next was the Squid-ink coated calamari el bulli with aioli, or calamari coated in black squid ink served with homemade garlic aioli. The boss had jokingly warned us before serving that the dish will look like a disaster had happened in the kitchen but do not be deceived by its looks, because the taste was completely opposite! The black squid ink batter covering the calamari was extremely crispy and not oily at all, though there was no discerning squid ink taste. Despite already tasting very flavourful on its own, pairing the fried calamari with the chef's specially prepared garlic aioli made the taste even more savoury than before. A real thumbs up to all the effort the chef has put in place of the usual fried calamari available. smile
Coca Iberico Jamon Lomo & Rocket

Coca Iberico Jamon Lomo & Rocket

Following was the Coca Iberico Jamon Lomo & Rocket, or spanish ham & rocket spanish pizza. We were told that the ham used was the loin part of the Iberico pork as it is less fat, but more intense in flavour. Indeed i could taste the strong meaty taste of the ham though i felt it was a bit too salty. Nevertheless, it goes very well with the thin, spanish pizza base (chewier compared to italian pizza) that was crispy at the edges.

Now, introducing the best dish that was served that night, the Crispy Wagyu Beef Cheek, which is a pan-seared melt-in-your-mouth beef cheek on mashed potato, US asparagus & a jug of red wine shallot gravy. The beef was first braised before being pan-seared, resulting in a moist flavourful texture and taste. The beef was truly so 'melty' that no effort was needed to cut through it. Even the mashed potato was worthy of praise as i have never eaten mashed potato that has an extra 'bounciness' texture to it. Try it to experience the sensational delight!
Bermuda Triangle of Chocolate

Lastly, the dessert that everyone look forward to, the Bermuda Triangle of Chocolate, a dish comprising of chocolate lava cake, white chocolate panna cotta, nutella parfait & kitchen berries. The chocolate lava cake was crispy on the outside, moist on the inside with warm chocolate flowing out of the cake when cut through. The nutella parfait melts in your mouth just like smooth milk ice cream. The white chocolate panna cotta was very soft and had a strong white chocolate flavour though it might be a little too sweet to my liking. Nevertheless, it was the perfect all-in-one dessert trio that definitely satisfy my huge craving for dessert! It's a must try!lol

I felt that the session has opened up my world of culinary art and am really grateful to OpenRice team for such delightful and unforgettable experience! Thank you OpenRice team and Gourmet Plus!

GOOD!!

GOOD!!

My sudden chocolate cravings led me to Bakerzin, where i heard many good reviews about their dessert. This cake, named "Sweet Pleasure" caught my eyes with its multi layers. My first bite into it was unforgettable- HEAVEN!!! At that moment, i feel a warm bliss flowing through my body. It was REALLY good. The seemingly hard layers of milk chocolate sheets melt in the mouth and together with the cream chocolate cream and crunchy praline, the taste was sensational! A must try!!

Satisfying treats Smile Jul 28, 2013

Categories : Italian | Ice Cream and Gelato

My friend and i was craving for something sweet and cooling after a movie at Marina Square and we chanced upon this shop located beside Killiney cafe. We decided to order a waffle with 2 scoops of gelato to share ($11.90). After testing a few flavours, my friend settled on one of their bestseller, Nuts About You - a mixture of nougat, hazelnuts and almonds. I took their new flavour- Melon, as i love fruity flavours.

The waffle took some time to come but it was definitely worth the wait. The waffle was crispy on the outside but fluffy and mosit on the inside. It has a nice egg taste and was not too sweet so it paired really well with the sweet gelato. We love how the warm waffle melts the gelato and soaked them up. The flavour 'Nuts About You' has a rich nutty flavour which i found out comes from using real premium nuts sourced from overseas. The 'Melon' flavour tasted very natural and i could bite into small pieces of real melon in it. This is definitely a gelato shop worthy of trying.lol

Good Sandwich Smile May 03, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Ramen

My friend and i decided to grab a mid-morning snack at Hoshino Coffee one day when we were meeting for an event at Plaza Singapura. I straight away ordered their Shrimp, Avocado and Egg Toast when i saw it in their menu because i am a huge fan of avocado.

Our toast took some time to come but from the quality of the food, i am willing to wait. The bread was toasted until crispy on the surface yet soft inside. The toast was bursting with creamy egg mayo, fresh soft avocado, crunchy sweet prawns, slices of cucumber and tomato and tangy tomato sauce. I was enjoying my toast so much that i polished them off in record speed.tongue

If you are wondering what is in the small bowl at the side of the toast, it is actually 2 olives poked in a cute toothpick. I left that out as after a bite, i simply dislike the taste. I wonder what is the chef purpose of serving the olives with the sandwich. Is it simply to enhance the presentation or as i feel more likely, to refresh the tastebud? Either or, it is not suitable for olives hater like me. tongue

Nice toast to treat ourselves once in a while as it doesn't come cheap being priced at $9.80 before gst and svc. Recommended.:bowchopstickl:lol

smooth cheesecake Smile Mar 11, 2013

Chef Icon Boston Cheesecake is really smooth and creamy. It is rich enough to satisfy your cheesecake craving, yet light enough not to make you feel jelat even after 2 slices. I had the Mango flavour one in the picture. There were cubes of real fresh mango in the cheesecake. The base was a moist sponge cake instead of the more common cookie base. They are sold in slices in their shop but only a selected flavour is available daily. If you want a specific flavour, you can order a whole cake from them.

Their tiramisu is also not to be missed. The make the tiramisu without gelatin, eggs, coffee and liquor, Instead, it is made with alternating layers of top grade Italian mascarpone, home-baked Italian biscotti and finished with a layer of Belgium dark chocolate. A very good option for people like me who doesn't like coffee.

Healthy and delicious indulgent. However, do note that they are not cheap as the quality of the ingredients they used are really good.
