Sakae Sushi has launched a new menu about 2 months ago so i decided to drop by for a quick lunch to have a look at what is in their menu now. They have introduced quite a number of new items but also kept quite a number of the more popular dishes from their old menu.

I ordered a Aburi Sushi Combo ($7.99) and a Saba Nitsuke ($8.99) to satisfy my love for fish. for the Aburi Sushi Combo, I was served with 4 seared sushi consisting of scallop, salmon, tuna and skipjack tuna topped with salmon roe. The skipjack tuna particularly leaves a deep impression on me as it was the thickest and most fishy among the four sushi. For a fish lover like me, i like it but for people who have lighter tastebuds, it might be hard to accept.

The Saba Nitsuke features a simmered mackerel in sweet sauce. The sweet sauce makes it very appetising and best paired with a bowl of rice.

Recommended Dish(es):  Aburi Sushi Combo,Saba Nitsuke

Spending per head: Approximately $20(Lunch)

good quality french bakes Smile Oct 31, 2013

Sophie bakery is one of the many french bakeries that has came to our little island. I feel that it is also one of the cheaper french bakery compared to many others. I particularly like their fruit tarts which comes in a handful of flavours such as longan, peach and strawberry. Do note that ll of the fruit tarts have the same base, just different fruit toppings.

One this particular day, i chose the peach tart ($5). Half a neatly sliced peach was placed in top of their delicious tart base that features a light fragipane cream in a crispy, buttery tart shell. There was only a small dollop of custard cream to hold the peach on top of the tart base, making it a good choice for people who do not like creamy stuff.

Recommended Dish(es):  fruit tarts

Spending per head: Approximately $5(Tea)

Wide variety of fruit tarts Smile Oct 31, 2013

My friend bought a fruit tart called the Fruity Crepe for me when she came to my house as she knew my adoration for fruit tarts.

The tart base consist of a crumbly, buttery tart with cream cheese mousse that is very smooth and has a light cheese taste. On top of it lies custard, sponge cake, fresh fruits, crepes and fresh cream arranged in layers, making it very visually appealing. Strawberry, blackberry, kiwi, blueberry and mango are used in this colourful creation. The freshness of the fruits they use and the complexity of the layers justify their higher-than-average price of $7.80++.

The use of both sweet and tangy fruits balance out the creaminess in this tart. The sponge cake was very light. The crepe was also very thin and soft. The whole combination might look heavy, but it was instead just right anf very satisfy. Overall, a good choice out of their wide variety of options.

a simple coffee place OK Oct 31, 2013

I was looking for a place to rest my feet after being dragged to go shopping with my friend when i initially wanted to rest at home. My friend decided to treat me to toast box as she was craving for their thick toast. Still feeling full from my lunch, i ordered a lime juice with aloe vera and a small slice of pandan chiffon cake for my sweet tooth. I had asked them to pack my drink as a takeaway.

The pandan chiffon cake was good as it has a nice fragrance of pandan and leave a lingering coconut sweetness in your mouth as you chew on it. It was also soft and cottony, thus very light on your stomach. smile

I had my lime juice while i continued shopping with my friend after the short tea break. The lime juice was sweet and not sour at all, making it very refreshing. One thing i hope they can improve is that they should provide those big straws that we use to drink pearl milk as the straw they give simply cannot suck up the aloe vera cubes within. I had a hard time scooping them up after finishing the juice. huffy

Spending per head: Approximately $3(Tea)

healthy cooling treats Smile Oct 31, 2013

I chanced upon this Mr Bean cafe at United Square and was surprised to see that it has seats for dine in and sells main meals other than their usual pancake and soymilk at their outlets islandwide. I was particularly drawn to their Waffle with Snowy Soy dessert set because i was craving for waffle ice cream. There was a choice of chocolate, raspberry or maple syrup for your sauce and i chose the raspberry because i like fruity flavour.

The waffles was made upon order so I had to wait for about 5 minutes which i don't mind because fresh, hot waffle are the best. Costing only $4.80, i was surprised to see that the ice cream was of a substantial size and 2 pieces of belgium waffle was served. The dish was liberally drizzled with the raspberry sauce. Taking the characteristic of belgium waffle, they were much smaller in size compared to those waffle served at Gelare. The waffles was sweet, dense and doughy. The dairy-free soy ice cream has a strong soy taste and was not too sweet, which balance out the sweetness of the waffle and sauce. It was a very delicious, cooling and filling teatime treat.
