Lunch gone wrong Cry May 03, 2013

I feel like the standard of this stall has gone down tremendously. I ordered the white rice with 3 sides. The first was potato with black pepper - The dish was extremely plain though the potatoes were well cooked. The second dish was spinach which was extremely horrible. It was very blunt and tasted undercooked. It did not appear to be seasoned in any way either. Last but not least was silken tofu. Again, this dish was quite tasteless. I am very disappointed with both the standard as well as customer service. I was waiting for nearly 10 minutes before the staff took notice and served me. The staff appeared to be in a bad mood and showed no signs of customer service. The food on the other hand was hardly edible. I will not be paying over $4 again for this (even with my kopitiam card, it ended up amounting to $4.50). Not worth the money at all.

Noodles Cry Feb 10, 2013

Categories : Coffeeshop | Zi Char

It was my first visit to Varinice eating house when I discovered a vegetarian stall there. It was dinner time and a queue was forming at the stall; along with the other stalls. This eating house was located in a one story coffee shop with only outdoor seating available. There were fans around the cofeeshop to keep customers reasonably comfortable. The stall had a variety of food available such as ala carte dishes that are cooked on the spot (Chicken rice, meat fried rice, normal fried rice) etc along with the normal white rice/bee hoon and dishes (tofu, vegetables, mock meat, curry).

I have always loved hong kong fried noodles and since this stall had it, I decided to to give it a go for take away. My dish was cooked on the spot by the chef which took a decent amount of time (10 minutes). The food was still warm when I reached home. However, I was quite disappointed in the dish. There were a few mock praws, a few carrots, a few stalks of vegetables and mock meats.

Though the noodles were not over or under cooked, it lacked ingredients and that wok hei flavor. The noodles tasted way too plain. It was also lacking in taste (even with soya sauce/salt added).

Unfortunately the meal was below satisfactory. However, looking at the queue, I would give this stall another chance hoping they do better with other dishes.

Bananas for chocolate Cry Feb 04, 2013

Categories : American | Café | Desserts and Cakes

I love the warm ambience of this place. No doubt, space constraint here can be quite stiff with the tables quite close to one another leaving not much room to stretch, especially since this outlet is packed most of the time. I found the most enticing dessert fit for sharing to be one of my favourites - Eggrolls.

This time round however, I found myself to be disappointed. Instead of the 3 tier pots of chocolate for dipping, there were only two - Caramel and milk chocolate. The quality of the eggrolls had also gone down. There were 5-6 pieces of egg rolls sprinkled with icing sugar. The outer layers was not as crispy as I hoped they would be and the sliced bananas in these rolls appeared to be way too hard which gave off a very raw taste! I don't see myself taking the risk to order this dish again especially for the price paid.

Customer service on the other hand appeared to be decent with constant water re-fills without much prompting smile

Finally 24! Cry Feb 04, 2013

Tiramisu

Tiramisu

For my 24th Birthday, my sister was sweet enough to get me a birthday cake from Mad Jack. I have never tried the cakes there or the food and this was a first for me. As the manager recommended her the Tiramisu, she decided to get it. The cake was pretty, filled with fluffy layers of cream and lady fingers and topped off with expresso. The cake did look very pretty presentation wise and I was thankful for all the effort.

However, It was really hard to cut through the cake without messing it up completely. I am a huge fann of tiramisu and have had some great tiramisu desserts before but this cake was only average. It tasted too plain and on the bitter side (no doubt it has expresso in it) but sweetness was insanely lacking. The cake also did not taste as flavourful as I hope for. To my astonishment it was also very pricy! Doubt I'll be coming here for tea ):

cupcakes for sweet tooths Cry Aug 19, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Café

I never knew Gloria Jean's had cupcakes and was pretty excited to try them out. My friend and I decided to get one each!

The chocolate cupcake tasted pretty good. It was moist and flavorful. However, the chocolate on top was a tad too sweet. It did not taste as rich as I hoped for. Instead, it tasted as if the whole thing was made of icing. A little disappointed. I am a sweet tooth but I do prefer granche chocolate or rich chocolate as compared to just something with a chocolate flavor that tastes pretty much like sugar.
