Oh-so-awesome salad! Smile Mar 22, 2014

Categories : Fusion | Café

Ever since I saw that the cafe is opened, I really wanted to try it and here I am! Came here on a saturday afternoon and was pleased it was not crowded. And seriously, this will not be the last visit to this awesome cafe!

With the number of specialty cafe places coming up, its hard to discern who's good and who is serving a rip off your pockets for eggs. I super happy to have found my awesome cafe, because food was honest, tasty and comes at superbly reasonable prices!

I had the "my awesome salad".. man.. the quality of the food is great! The $15 salad came with greens, tomatoes, fat slices of smoked salon, thinly sliced chicken breast, duck rillettes(which i omitted) and avocados. This is THE DISH if you are looking for some healthy food with good quality protein and fats. I love it! Everything just tasted so clean yet tasty on its own lightly drizzled with olive oil with no overwhelming sauces to kill the freshness of the ingredients.

Coffee was good as well, though it lacked some kick somewhat.

My dining partner had scrambled eggs with salmon which was relatively cheap at $6,50, but the dish looked quite disappointingly 'home-made', with no greens and literally scrambled eggs which were a little too watery and bare slices of smoked salmon.

Another plus - staff are super friendly!

Favourable Bar grub hangout! Smile Mar 20, 2014

This has got to be one of my favourite bars with good quality food and price to boot. Their signature dish is the Hainanese roast pork, and the really good stuff of this dish for me is the belachan chilli! Firstly, the pork is very juicy but the skin is so wonderfully crispy!! The chilli is abit like the traditional nyonya belachan.. so it gives the dish a very unique taste, especially when you pair it with beer!

The chicken wings is also a no-fail, because the marinate is well-done, flavourful and the skin is ever-so crispy.

I also ordered the garlic mussels.. it is very fragrant and the garlic takes away the 'fishiness' of the shellfish. I also like to add chilli to it as well. The mussels are very fresh, and what's great is that the dish is huge! I think the 3 dishes we ordered are good for 3 to 4 persons.. I felt it was abit too much for 2 person though.

Lastly, what i really love, is that theres no service charge here. Super cool and a huge plus!

Casual Jap food that never fails Smile Mar 18, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Watami never fails me as a quality casual Japanese restaurant - and i like to bring foreign friends here for a casual meal. As we were not feeling too hungry, we didnt order the set meals but the value for money dishes left us satsified!

I ordered a dish called the Beancurd roll with avocado and prawns. I really loved it because I love beanskin and the dish was very fresh and not too heavy, good for starters!  In fact, it reminded me of the viet fresh spring rolls. However, there fillings were not very generous as I felt like i only tasted a small piece of avocado in one of the portions and the rest were mostly just greens.

I also liked their Katsu Rice Set which came with a choice of chicken katsu served with rice. The katsu portion was huge and very crispy on the outside. A portable stove is brought to the table and a raw egg is supplied so that you can add this to the pan when it is sizzling hot so one gets a scrambled egg gravy drenching the sliced katsu. I did find the sauce abit salty though, but eating it with the rice makes it less so.

My friend ordered the Watami Tonkotsu ramen. I tried a spoonful of it, and needless to say, cannot compare with the other ramen places which specialises in Tonkotsu. The broth tasted quite watery and lacking the porky taste. The noodles were overcooked and the eggs were fully boiled (no runny yolks). I wouldnt recommend this dish if you really like ramen as I think you can get something better elsehwhere at the same price.

Lastly, we also had the hot stone bibimbap. This dish was not bad, given that its a japanese restaurant. I like the fact that it is cooked on the hot stone, and you can really smell the fragrance of the rice cooking. Other than that, I think this is quite a fullproof dish as long as you have enough of the pepper sauce in it!

Well, generally I think I will always recommend watami for a budget friendly meal with good quality food.

No fuss authentic chinese eats Smile Mar 17, 2014

Categories : Shanghainese | Dim Sum | Noodles

Came here for dinner after wanting to try it a couple of times because im a big fan of dumpling. Menu is rahter limited and one look at it you can easily tell its famous for its various types of dumplings, so please do order that if you come!

The decor of the restuarant is clean and no fuss, and food prices are relatively cheap. We ordered the xiaolongbao, which came at $9 per basket of 7. It was good but still not good as the ones from ,y favourite dingtaifung. Skin was abit thick though i must say the broth were very flavourful.

We also ordered the gyoza, which i quite like and would recommend for anyone to try out! its pan fried on one side, and steamed on the other, just how gyozas should be! its also filled with chives and meat, and came at a very large serving of 10 on the plate.

As a veg lover, I also ordered the spinach but this was very disappointing. the veg was rather tasteless, and comparative to the cost of the dumplings, give me dumplings anytime man!

My boyfriend ordered the chajiangmian, and i must say its not too bad, though the portion might be small if you are just eating that as a main. For us, because we had already had so much dumplings, the portion was good for him. The sauce was thick and they were not at all stingy on the amount of minced meat, though we could do with more greens in it.

A good place for value for money chinese food I would say!

Bosses is my foolproof place to go to when i want good quality dimsum at affordable prices. Each time, Im amazed at the rpice and how filling the dishes are! Almost everytime i eat it i order the same few dishes but i try to order 1 or 2 different ones to try. This time round, other than the usual signature stuff that I order like the egg lava bun and xiao long bao, I tried something different which was surprisingly good!

Firstly, lets talk about the 'usual' dishes. The xiaolongbao is Definitely something i order each time because it just feels incomplete to not order xiaolongbao. I would say the xiaolongbao here is not bad, tasty broth and all, but I think i prefer the one from dingtaifung. Where it lose out is the skin texture, which is not thin enough.

The egg lava bun is something I will never fail to order.. and I think bosses ranks in my top 3 of egg lava bun in Singapore because I like the saltiness of the egg yolk in it. The texture of the bun is very soft as well.. I like to just bite it a little and slurp the watery yolk in it. Slurps! This time i went, my boyfriend and I have' progressed' to ordering one basket each.. that shows how much we love it!

The Siewmai here is a must-do if you love siewmai. Beware though because they are really huge! Just look at the picture.. and the big succulent prawn on top of them just makes it so filling. I think its very worth the price and I like the fact that the meat in it is not too fatty.

The only disappointment this time round came from the har gow. It came in 3 different colours -white, black and yellow.. but they all tasted the same..

The star of today's entry is this!!The chilli crab tart. When I saw it on the menu, i was rather skeptical.. but wah.. the chilli crab filling is wonderful - fragrant, just right spicy and full of flavour! it even went very well with thr tart crust! I only wished I had the stomach space to eat more of this..
