Surprisingly good gyoza soup! OK Feb 24, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

My bf had wanted to come here for a loooooooong time after he saw countless pictures of people eating the volcano ramen here.. so here we go! While I would say the ramen was nothing to scream about compared to the others we'v been to, there was a surprisingly good dish which will make me come back for more.. the gyoza in Tonkotsu soup!

He had the Tonkotsu Kazan Shoyu ramen.. which I would say in terms of taste, its not superb compared to the likes of ippudo but.. the volcano hot stone concept was definitely interesting! The meal also comes with rice, which you can then mix into the rest of the soup when you are done with the noodles.. reminds me of mui-fan! lol.

I love the soup of ramen.. but dislike eating too much of the noodles because I find them very filling.. so guess what? I found my perfect dish!! soup gyoza in tonkotsu soup! I really really hope other ramen restaurants introduce this dish too.. so that carb-conscious girls like me can find an alternative to enjoy the soup without the heavy carb noodles!

In terms of the service.. I would say the waiters are very polite.. but there were instances of service lapses.. I waited half an hour for my gyoza after the ramen arrived.. and when I asked them for it, they reminded the kitchen.. and then the order was delivered to the wrong table.. so i had to wait another 15 minutes.. by then the boyfriend had finished his ramen.. and im left waiting my my simple gyoza soup.. but they did redeem themselves by giving me a free plate of edamame.. We also had chicken karage... but it was quite oily and tasteless..

Well, I would say the whole hot stone concept is more gimmicky than having a real effect on the taste of the ramen. And you do have the kind of 'bbq' smell after eating there.. but I think i'l return for the gyoza soup!

Smoked salmon salad Smile Feb 23, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Fusion | Café | Desserts and Cakes

This is my second time here at Dulcet and Studio. I liked the relatively quiet environment of this little Japanese cafe, and the casual vibe it has. I remembered the first time when I came i had to try the cream puff (you can read my review http://sg.openrice.com/singapore/restaurant/commentdetail.htm?commentid=54128 )

Sadly, the cream puff has been sold out this time round, and as i didn't feel like eating a cake I chose something light: smoked salmon salad.

Expect a mixture of Western meets Japanese cuisine including specialty pasta, beef spare rib stew, fish & chip. Lunch and dinner sets are served at a very reasonable price of below $15 and $20 respectively. If you go to their facebook page, you will also see that they have recently updated their menu.

Anyway, my smoked salmon salad was surprisingly good and hearty with thick slices of salmon and the salad dressing was a creamy type but light. They were definitely not stingy on the salmon!

The coffee there is not too bad as well.. i like the cappuccino. Overall a nice place to hang out if you want to avoid the crowd, and try to catch the cream puffs before they are sold out!

Black Canyon coffee is a popular cafe chain in Thailand and i was wonderfully surprised to find an outlet here in Singapore. though it is not in a convenient place, it offers the commercial fusionopolis some variety from the limited F&B chains around.

Though in Thailand it mainly serves American style coffee, the one here included a thai food menu. If you ever are nearby, pls come for the food rather than the coffee. I loved som tum and it was great they had a variety of Thai salads.. up to 6 types if Im not wrong, and they also had the more normal Amercian style salad such as garden and nicoise salad. I had the somtum, but this one was made with carrots instead of green papaya. SUperb for low calories!

Of course this is not enough for me before I go for a workout later, so i also ordered the Fatt Choy roll as they call it, which is a kind of ngoh hiang. $7 for 6 pieces, not too bad. And the som tum was a decent portion for $7. I;m sure it will make a good lunch spot for me again.

Angmokia order the chicken chop, which came in a huge plate, making the chicken look a bit puny. But don't be deceived because underneath it sits a bed of mashed potatoes, enough to keep the growing boy filled up. =)

Price was value for money.. we spent about $30 together for 2 sides, 1 main and a drink.

Hongkong cafe with no dimsum Smile Dec 03, 2013

Living opposite vivocity, I often walked past Central at the basement because it is just opposite Giant the Supermarket. After having eaten at Hongkong cafes a couple of times, I know that you can get cheap and filling food, but no quality. Variety… maybe. Its more a marketing concept targted towards youngsters who wanna dine in a restaurant I guess. Anyway my bf wanted to try for once at last so here we are on a weeknight.

I often saw people taking away these skewer things much like the ingredients of yong tau foo with szechuan spicy gravy so i had that on the side. It looked good and tasted very very spicy but as it was already 8 plus there were limited types of skewers left. Nevertheless they were good and I would most likely come to take away here some time!

I chose a ngoh hiang kind of thing, a fish cake and the chinese radish. Actually the latter was the best! Its the cheapest item but it was definitely cooked for very long so it was soft and absorbed the full flavour of the szechuan soup. They also came served in 4 types of sauce- the brown is a sesame peanutty kind, the 2 red are spicy/sweet spicy and the white one is a horseradish one which taste a little like a milder wasabi. I liked the peanutty the best!

The prawn dumpling soup is one of the better ones I had tasted in a HK cafe. They were huge and only came at $7 a bowl. Much bettet than the $6 one at the Food Republic on level 3. =P They each had like 2 prawns in each one! Soup was also very flavourful as well. The only bad thing is the skin is a little thick, but a great dish if you are hungry yet want something healthy.

Angmokia didnt eat lunch that day so he loaded up on the Pork chop baked rice. It was also much better than Kim Gary… more flavour, pork chop was tasty on its own.. look how sinfully cheesy it is!

And for fun we order the fried fish skin for appetisers.. these were alright.. but tasted a little like out of a packet.. not fresh like the ones at bosses.. but overall, not too bad as a snack. We were sorely disappointed they had no dimsum though… not even the most basic siewmai and hargow! Oh well, I guess we cant ask for too much since they already surpass our expectations in terms of quality..

Yuppy cafe at Tiong Bahru Smile Dec 03, 2013

Pardon me for being ignorant but since 40 hands came into Tiong Bahru and the recent revival of the area with all these indie cafes, I haven been here. So here. SO here I am after about 2 years(!) and after a recommendation from a friend finally made our way to Flock cafe here for brunch.

Vibe here is good; relaxed although its quite crowded. Food is priced affordable and good quality. Check out what we had:
Omelette and toast

Big breakfast

The omelette is creamy and very satisfying. I wasn't feeling very hungry that's why I ordered this. I kept seeing other people having some smoked salmon sandwich or somethng which looked superb. I'm so gonna go back there. I was satisfied with my omelette that day.

Angmokia’s breakfast platter was great- bacon, sausage, baked beans, 2 poached eggs and toast. Though he thought the latter was pretty small, lol. Oh i forgot, the portobello was sedap! It had this really intense smoky flavour.. slurps.

It was all good value for money. And of course, the coffee was quite good, right notes of bitterness without being too acidic. I like!
