joo bar @ tan quee lan street Smile Feb 14, 2015

Categories : Korean | Bars/Lounges

I believe most of you won't know where Tan Quee Lan Street at first mention. But it is where most of us frequent when we crave for steamboat. Yeap, located just opposite Bugis Junction, Tan Quee Lan street is parallel to the steamboat street at bugis.

Joining a host of korean F&Bs in Singapore - Joo Bar, is the latest offering in store for us. Parked at the centre of the street, Joo Bar is housed in a 3 story shophouse with a sleek and modern chill interior.

Makgeolli

The first in Singapore to house brew their own makgeolli, fans of this rice wine choose from a vary of different flavours - original, lychee, yucha, mango and strawberry. My personal favourites would be the lychee and yucha. Both flavours have a well mix blend of rice wine and flavouring, a treat in my opinion.

Kimchi chicken pot pie

Kimchi chicken potpie. That golden crust hides a very tasty stew of chicken, vege and kimchi. Good after many rounds of drinks which warms up the stomach.

Tofu Chips

These tofu chips were excellently done, goes well with the alcohol drinks and pairs with guacamole and kichi salsa. A blend of koren and western, loved this item the moment i popped one into my mouth

Slow Roasted Mangalitsa belly

Pork belly which was brined, massaged and steamroasted for hours, served with shredded chive and chill falkes with soy sauce seasoning. That tender piece of pork is the highlight.

Warm kimchi with toufu and spam

Who doesn't love spam? Kimchi, spam and toufu? haha yes, they have it all here. Take your pick. I can only say their kimchi here is really very good. The spam though can be more crispy.

Hand chopped korean minced rib steak

I'm no beef eater, but this mix of US prime beef served with chopped nuts and garlic flakes will leave any foodie wanting for more. Nicely done and the group thought it was a dish worth coming back for.

The Lokal is finally serving up dinner. We have for some time, heard rumours of this, but nothing has happened. Thankfully, all has been sorted and this popular Aussie inspired brunch cafe will start serving dinner from 11.11.2014.

Although priced slightly higher than the average cafes during brunch, Lokal's dinner menu is more aligned to the normal restaurants around the area. Seeing how passionate Darren and his team go about preparing their dishes, as well as, adding that personal touch to get feedback from us ordinary customers, I decided that I would want to share with ya'll their new menu.

Well, we almost got all da dishes

The starters:

Parfait of chicken liver

Seared Wagyu beef carpaccio

Beetroot cured Norwegian salmon

wait, where's the drinks?

The Mains:

Wagyu beef goulash

1/2 Kampong chicken

Slow Roasted lamb shoulder

Lokal sausage platter

overall review: Definitely worth the try. Starters should range from $17 to $20 while mains would range from $25 to $30. Drinks are a tad pricely but that is the price for having great food with a warm evening setting. Portions are huge though so be prepared to be fed.

Categories : Teochew | Seafood | Kids-Friendly

for my full review and rating of food: http://shauneeie.blogspot.sg/2014/09/chui-huay-lim-authentic-teochew.html

1. Chinese Tea

Ain't really a chinese tea fan, but how premium chinese tea can taste so good, i am left to scratch my head. Chef Chan was enthusiastically explaining how the tea differs - oolong tea (which is sipped before a meal) and tie guan yin (which is served after meals). Personally, the tie guan yin was better, with that subtle sweet after taste lingering on your tongue.

2. Chilled Hand Peeled Lobster with fresh fruits

The chefs specifically highlighted the part on hand peeling the lobster meat. That's because the meat will be in larger chunks, and hence more appealing to our taste as compared to using a machine to scrape off the meat. I found the dish quite average (because we had pince & pints the other day), but nonetheless, the lobster meat was fresh, and blended well with the fresh fruits. Something unique for a teochew dish.

3. Salt Baked Prosperity Chicken with Whole Abalone

Visually stunning when it was first served. At a whopping $120 for this dish, it sure had to be something special, and i can safely say that it's worth the price. Mushrooms and whole abalones aplenty, the chicken was baked perfectly. The meat was tender and salty (which is to be expected) enough to my liking. The mushrooms and abalones were infused with flavours from the chicken as well as that tad of salt. Probably the highlight of the meal.

4. Double-boiled chicken soup

The first impression i got was that it coincides with the Halloween theme! See that porcelain pumpkin lookalike. Wasn't really impressed with the soup, which was no surprise as i am rarely a soup person (and because my mum cooks great soup). This soup has a more of those traditional, light, brothy taste. if you like these kind of clear chicken soup, you will be wowed.

5. Steamed Jumbo Crab with Hua Diao

Fresh crab steamed in egg and hua tiao. Only one outcome -
a dish worth remembering. Good, but I felt it still can't beat the Chairman's crab dish i had in
hong kong. Look out for the steam egg on the crab. Immersed in hua tiao jiu and embodies the flavours of the crab, subtle, flavourful, intense.

6. Teochew Oyster Omelette

One word to describe this dish - SHIOK. If you think that you should not order such a dish in an upscale teochew restaurant, then you are wrong. Such a simple dish has caught the palate of everyone on the table by surprise. A dish I'd really recommend when you are here. A genius at work at frying this delightable 'orh jian'.

7. Pan Fried Yellow Croaker

The yellow croaker is said to be a rare find. Nothing fantastic in my opinion. To add, am not a fishy person where the first taste of its meat encapsulates my point of not liking fish - the fishy overwhelming odour. Some may like it perhaps? It could be an opinion divider.

8. Steamed Minced Meat with Ages Radish

Another dish which won the over the dinner table. Again, a simple dish, yet hard to master. It brings back memories of my grandmother who used to whip up this dish (but this was even better). The 'Cai Po', according to Chef Chan was specifally hand chosen for the dish. Aged for 10 years, it can only be found in a remote part of China. That taste and flavour of this mince meat, you can't get it elsewhere.

9. Tau Suan

Believe me, i was ready to give a pass to this dish when it was served. Many, including me, are not fans of these traditional desserts. It took one mouthful to wow me. Unlike those sold in our hawker centres, this Tau Suan is everything that a chinese dessert should be like. Chef Chan mentioned that they added cured orange peel, which made the taste of this Tau Suan even better. I finished the bowl so fast, i wanted another - perfect end to a fine tasting session.the man of the hour - Chef Chan

Overall verdict: read more on my blog!

Sarnies - 136 Telok Ayer St Smile Oct 15, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Steaks and Grills | Burgers and Sandwiches | Roasted Meat | Brunch

Yes probably one of the best cafes around the area - Sarnies.

1. The Churros

So fortunate that we were the first few to taste this dish new on the menu. I guess trying to ride on the hype of item. Served with chocolate sauce (VERY GOOD), the churros are crispy on the outside and more doughy on the inside (like ban jiang kuey). Very different yes, but i liked it because it wasn't oily at all.

1. THE COFFEE

Yes, the item which constantly draws me back to Sarnies is their mocha. At S6.50, the mocha served here is slightly charred yet having a sweet after taste, the blend of coffee mixing well with the chocolate. I can truly say it is one of the best around the area.

2. Sarnies Chocolate Brownie

You gotta try it to believe. Rich, super chocolaty and moist. Every bite almost melts in your mouth and is complemented by a vanilla ice cream. It's best to share due to its richness. Nonetheless, the must order if i want a sugar rush

3. Risotto

When the cafe first started with a dinner menu, i was quite hesitant to try. Seldom do cafes serve good dinner items. It took me probably a few weeks later to finally succumb to temptation.

Yep. served only during dinner, this dish was the highlight. Their risotto is amazing. Its tough to even think of places in Singapore selling good risottos, but the chef made it look real easy. Just how it should be done - saucy in texture, flowing almost like a lava when tilted. Grains are soft yet different from hard enough to differentiate one grain from another. A must try!! I dont think its on the menu - mushroom risotto (i cheated and asked for bacons to be added as well).

Chicken and homemade pesto with mixed greens

served during lunch, Sarnies has a variety of salads and sandwiches. It may be alittle pricey, but the portions are large and very healthy. Good for sharing in my opinion.

Cajun spiced kampong chicken in a brown bag

juicy and tender. the spice goes well with the chicken. the only downside - the portion was too small.

Belgian mussels in sauvignon blanc

the iced chocolate

Categories : Spanish | Bars/Lounges | Paella

Definitely not 'Free of Charge'. FOC (pronounced as fock and represents fire in spanish) is a contemporary Spanish tapas bar set in the heart of Hong Kong Street, delighting after work goers with their selection of good food, music and most importantly alcohol.

Was here on a tuesday night and boy was it crowded. Very typicality like of restaurants around the cbd but a good indication that you'll be in for a good time.

What did we have?

Grilled Iberico Pork ribs w Smoked Pumpking Puree

Tender, juicy but a long wait for this dish. Flavours were there but I didn't manage to catch much of the smokiness on the pumpkin.

Mushroom Croquettes

One is not enough. You'll need a second serving, a third or maybe you'll be able to wipe off the dish. Mushroom can be evidently found inside and the taste marries well with the potato. Crispy exterior, moist interior.

Squid Ink Paella

One of the best i've eaten. The seafood were fresh and cooked perfectly. The grains were consumed with the rich black squid ink. Very satisfying indeed.

Pulled Pork Taco

Certainly a different take on the normal pulled pork. Unique I must say. Taste wise, it was average and I still prefer the ones marinated in BBQ sauce and served in chunkful. This was rather small and very unsatisfying. You need more than 2, but it will bust your budget.
