Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen | Kids-Friendly

A few days back, I had cravings for Ramen, so I scouted Pickering Street for the Japanese noodles. I chanced upon this shop which had reasonable pricing, and so there I went. I had no idea what the name of the restaurant is saying. Only got it after I asked for the bill, cos it was stated on the receipt. Haha!

Anyway, the shop's name is called Netsu-Retsu Ichibantei Restaurant. Phheeewww. I made it through that super long name. Anyway, I went there with a colleague, and she recommended that I have Tonkatsu Ramen. "What in the world is Tonkatsu Ramen? Please don't tell me it's made from some dolphin meat or something." I asked my colleague foolishly. WELL, hearing the word Tonkatsu always brings dolphins to my mind, so yes, I hope I have explained why I made that silly comment. Apparently, Tonkatsu (豚カツ/ とんかつ/ トンカツ) means pork cutlet.

OMG what a #*%&^*&^#$ difference!

Anyway, the ramen came looking something like this:

Ramen is not exactly a dish that can be perfected by just anybody, btw. I have a nickname for Ramen that's made in Singapore: Japanese Instant Noodles, I call it. Hey, don't make fun of my nickname making skills can? I just like to think simple, OKAY?

Anyway, back to why I called it Jap instant noodles: Most people in Singapore who think they can cook and then sell Ramen totally insulted the noodles cos they haven't grasped the importance of making the soup broth tasty and the noodles springy enough! And that sucks. SO there. I won't say that this chef cooked this very well, all I will say is that I think this is not bad.

Why? Cos the soup broth is tasty! But I don't really like the texture of the noodles. Too hard. Also, my personal preference will be that there will be no bamboo shoots and too much spring onions in it. Cos I just don't take both items. And in this lunch of mine, apparently the whole bowl is filled with it. I spent some time taking them out though.

I never really liked spring onions from young, the taste feels too raw for my tongue. And as for bamboo shoots... my dad used to tell us it is poisonous, and would scold us if he saw us eating bamboo shoots in a dish. So, from young, my sister and I were just trained not to eat bamboo shoots. I still have no idea why he says it is poisonous, though. He just doesn't eat them and doesn't like us to eat them too. So there.

The tonkatsu (see, I finally know!) was very well done though, the meat was tender and was easy to chew on. The meat was also very well marinated, the taste was very good.

The ramen costs $12, after GST and service charge, the cost is around $14. Still reasonable for lunch, right?

I also liked how they did up their ramen menu, on the walls in Japanese! Like, seriously. Japanese? How I know how to read, sia. haha. But well, at first I thought it was art and didn't even pay attention to it. So yes, there you go. If you like ramen, and are craving for ramen, you can just try out this restaurant. But no hoo-ha over this place, though. There are better ones out there.

St. Marc Cafe: Review Smile Nov 02, 2014
Categories : Japanese | Café | Desserts and Cakes | Ice Cream and Gelato

Here we go - another cafe review! Recently I have been checking out quite a bit of food and coffee places, and really enjoying that!

Today I'm at St. Marc Cafe, in Harbourfront. Don't let the name of this cafe fool you, it's totally Japanese!

Here, they specialise in their desserts and pastries, as well as their green tea latte, which is a popular favourite here.

Desserts galore!

If you do come here, I suggest the Chocolate Chococro ($2.40 each), which is their signature item! Chococro is made of best blend of Ghana Beans and finest Ecuador beans, wrapped with crispy rich buttery flavor croissant dough.

They also have the Green Tea and the Strawberry version, and I have to say that although I'm not a chocolate lover, but it tastes the best out of all three flavours, to me. smile

Check out the Chicken Egg Salsa ($3.30)! It reminds me of S Korea's egg bread. haha.

They also have things like lunch sets to cater to the working crowd!

Their cups have 3 sizes (hot drinks) - I like the medium sized cup as that's really just the right amount. Especially for the green tea latte, because the green tea taste is quite strong and thick, you may not want to order the largest cup.

They will issue you a buzzer so you don't have to stand around the counter to wait for your order. Once ready, the buzzer will buzz (duh.) and just head to the counter to collect your food/drinks.

I ordered the Little Fuji because the Chococro is totally sold out (didn't have time to wait for the freshly baked ones) sad

But I loved the Little Fuji! The crispy pastry is topped by what looks like a mini snow mountain of vanilla ice-cream on it and drizzled with caramel sauce! It was very good.

I also ordered the Affogato ($5.60) and its creamy consistency was pretty good! It also came with a chocolate waffer stick smile

Pouring in the espresso!

Complete, stir well to drink~

I went to Paradise Dynasty (Legend of the Xiao Long Bao) with my friends earlier sometime last week to try out the restaurant's signature 8 flavoured soup dumplings!

The restaurant is part of the Paradise Dynasty Group. I am a fan of their food! So here I am at the Vivocity Branch!

The restaurant is HUGE. You don't have to worry about the space here. I came here during lunch early, and it almost seemed like we had the whole place to ourselves. So we chose the seat which is nearest to the glass tall window, which offers us the view of the opposite Sentosa.

There is only Pu-er tea here, so that's what we had.

The lady waitress handed us the menu, and we ordered the signature 8 flavor dumplings ($14.80) at once!

8 flavoured soup dumplings

The soup dumplings were served in multi-colours, namely: White, Green, Light Brown, Black, Yellow, Orange, Grey and Pink. (WHAT?!, you ask.)

Take note, what's interesting is, there's an order to eating these things!

Remember the colours I mentioned above? I have already put them in its eating order.

The flavours:

White: Original Soup Dumpling flavour (Start with this one)

Green: Ginseng

Light Brown: Foie Gras

Black: Black Truffle

Yellow: Cheesy

Orange: Crab Roe

Grey: Garlic

Pink: Szechuan (End with this!)

Apparently, eating it in order enhances the overall taste and will best bring out each of the 8 distinct flavours! To me, the ones which stood out to me the most were the original flavour, the foie gras and the black truffle. The rest had a good taste overall (I totally wasted the Ginseng one because mine broke!!!!!) but did not stand out like the 3 flavours I just mentioned.

The 3 flavours were rich in its soupy formula and nice to taste. If I had to pick my favourite, it would be the Black truffle Xiao Long Bao. My least favourite, however, was the Szechuan (pink) one. I would have appreciated it further if it was more flavourful, rather, it was very mild and not exciting enough.

We also ordered other dishes:

La Mian with Pork Slices and Signature Pork Bone Soup

The La Mian with Sliced Pork in Signature Pork Bone soup ($9.80) was very good in totality. The noodles were of the right consistency, the pork tasted just right (with the right amount of fat), the egg was slightly wobbly in texture but firm.

Ta-dah! Ready to enjoy!

The soup base - OH LA LA - I must say. It was delicious yet did not feel overpowering, like some bone soups can be. It did not taste like it was made up of MSG. I understand from the menu that the this soup has been simmered under slow fire for 12 hours (SERIOUSLY!). I would rate this dish 4 golden stars. hahaha. It fits my requirements for a good lunch, you know. The portion is good for 2 people to enjoy, if you're also ordering the soup dumplings - which is a must-have since you're in a restaurant which specialises in soup dumplings right!

Crisp-Fried Whitebait with Salt and Pepper

Crisp-Fried Whitebait with Salt and Pepper ($9.80) was well done. I loved the slight taste of salt as I munch down these crispy things. No taste of pepper, but this makes for a very good snack. lol Unfortunately, I felt that it was quite expensive for such a small plate. The size is not exactly worth its price.

Shanghai Fried Rice

The Shanghai fried rice ($10.80) is nice, it is not too oily and not too dry. Ingredients also tasted fresh and succulent (prawn bits).

Cold tofu with Century Egg

What do you get when you put cold tofu and century egg together? One of my favourite dishes! This dish was appetizing and a tad salty. But the good kind, if you know what I mean. Century egg is something you enjoy if you love it, and if you don't love it, you'll probably never enjoy it no matter how they make it. Thank goodness, I love it! Such a boring name and a literal translation at that - Cold tofu with Century Egg ($6.80), pretty much explains it all. smile

Dessert Time! How can we miss this out?

Souffle Egg White Balls Stuffed with Red Bean and Banana

Pan fried Pastry Red Bean Pancake

We shared the Souffle Egg White Balls Stuffed with Red Bean and Banana (3 pcs for $4.80) and the Pan fried Pastry Red Bean Pancake ($6.50).

I can't say I love the dessert, because I'm not exactly a red bean and banana person. But I have to say that they have made this traditional dessert very well and I enjoyed eating it regardless. I also like that for the red bean pancake, the outer skin tastes like puff pastry. It was interesting to eat and it's something I would recommend to my friends to check out.

In summary, I feel that the food here is still a tad expensive, but really worth a try! But for the budget conscious, I would really just order the noodle soup and the 8 coloured soup dumplings, because these 2 dishes have left the most impact on me during this visit. smile

Over its huge furore on its provocative advertising campaign, I was curious to try out their food after coming across its branch in Orchard Road. To a certain extent, I guess the noise (positive or negative), worked for them.

Also under the umbrella of the Lo & Behold Group, I recently reviewed their The White Rabbit when I went there for lunch, which was a major disappointment for me. How's Overeasy? Here's my review.

OVEREASY is a modern American-style diner and bar serving up comfort food classics and blissful beverages.

Accessibility:
Approx 5 mins walk from Orchard MRT Station

Let's Eat!

Chocolate Millkshake & Smokey the Bear ($9 each)

The chocolate milkshake is super chocolatey, and doesn't let chocolate lovers down. As for Smokey the Bear milkshake, it's main ingredient is banana mixed with smoked maple syrup.

The entire mix tastes good and not too sweet. What's more, it's topped with a glazed short piece of bacon!

All-day Diner Breakfast ($24)

A traditional breakfast as can be. It comes with 2 eggs with any choice, but they didn't check my choice with me. Anyway, I went with the surprise option and it came sunny side up. Chicken sausage, house-made rosti, crispy bacon and a side of toast. While I enjoyed it, I did think that the cost of the meal was quite expensive for what was served.

Truffled with Wild Mushrooms Mac & Cheese ($16)

I loved this! It's so cheesy, with the right amount of truffle. This was really tasty and we enjoyed this thoroughly.

Texas Chilli Cheese Fries with Cajun Spice ($14)

The fries were not crispy enough, while the toppings are tasty! The portion is for sharing, unless you're only ordering this. Good enough for 3-4 people, for sharing!

I also heard that their buffalo wings are pretty good. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try them, but I just might, the next time I return. smile

Low-Down
The best bit: The Smokey Bear milkshake, and the truffle mac and cheese!

The worse bit: The texture of the fries.

Today, I decided to have the swiss rolls from the famous Rich & Good Cake Shop (裕佳西饼店)! Despite the sold-out all-time favourite (Kaya) flavour, people still joined the long queue.

I bought 3 flavours - Mandarin Orange, Durian and Coffee. Each costed $8.

One long roll can be cut into 6 thick pieces, just nice for sharing with friends or family!

Mandarin Orange Flavour - The mandarin orange flavour was apparent throughout the swiss roll, the cake was fluffy and and the cream, with the zest from the flesh of the fruit was such a lovely combination!

Here's a frontal shot of my favourite flavour, out of the 3 which I bought! Really love this!

Durian - All time favourite for durian lovers, as the durian taste was strong and aromatic, but yet went well with the cream. Real bits of the durian also upped its overall value!

Coffee flavour - hints of coffee filled the roll, but would taste nicer if it were to be slightly stronger.

Overall, I did like the 3 flavours, but the mandarin orange flavour really worked the best for me! I loved its fragrance and the fluffiness of the cake. Definitely one of the best swiss rolls in Singapore, and I will be back to try the kaya (and buy another one of the Mandarin Orange Flavoured swiss roll!)
