We arrived at The Bento People on one Saturday afternoon, expecting a bento (somewhat a Japanese styled type), for lunch. It turned out to be better than expected, actually. It changes the conception of healthy food in our minds and offers it a delicious outlook as well as a healthy input (in our bodies).

The Bento people are also the same people behind The Snack Culture Company. Over here, customers get to have their 'Make your own healthy bento' lunch, where they practice choosing a healthy meal from a wide selection of whole grains, vegetables and protein/meat items. Just choose 3 dishes to fill up your bento box and you're all set to go.

The lunch is available from Monday - Saturday (11am - 3pm).

Their belief:

"We are about Eating Happy. Choosing Healthy. We use the Bento Box as a Visual Tool to educate and encourage people to practise choosing a Healthy Balanced Meal consisting of More Vegetables and More Whole Grains."

Some of their signature / popular dishes include: Brown rice with fresh herbs, Red rice with Chinese Olive Vegetables, Quinoa Salad with Yuzu Balsamic Dressing, The Nonya Salad, Bulgogi Beef, Salmon Confit, Sous Vide Chicken Breast (done in the Chinese Emperor Herbal Chicken Style).

Personally, I really liked the quinoa salad and the bulgogi beef dish. Dishes change once in a while, so you are constantly offered different healthy dishes to try from, giving you both variety and sparing you from all that guilt.

Sunrise Bistro & Bar Smile Oct 24, 2015

Sunrise Bistro & Bar offers diners a quaint place to chill with its repertoire of cuisine, an extensive wine list and a good mix of small bites and sweets. Helmed by its co-founder and chef with an impressive 22-year culinary experience, Chef Vincent Teng is affectionately known for his specialised skills in Sous Vide cooking, modern European cuisine with a contemporary twist and a fine blend of creativity.

Accessibility:
Approx 10mins drive from Eunos MRT Station

Outside the restaurant is a place to chill out with your friends, watching soccer matches and having a beer. Al fresco style.

The restaurant boosts a spacious area which is comfortable to dine in, no squeezing and cramp feeling, yay!

Let’s
Eat!

Seafood Chowder Soup ($12)

The photo shows a tasting portion, that's why it looks small! I recommend this creamy seafood as a warm starter. It tastes lovely and comforting, the seafood was fresh too.

Seared Foie Gras ($19)

Again another tasting sized portion. But I savoured every bite of their foie gras. Layered in mango, citrus jam and berry compote for a touch of zing. One of the better foie gras I've had so far!

Sunrise "Fish & Chips" ($26)

Deep fried and off wowing people for its presentation, the red snapper fish is deep fried and laid on fries, with mango salsa and tartare sauce on the side. Amazing thing is that the flesh was free of bones, so no worries if you want to order this! Personally I felt this was an interesting attempt to recreate the good ol' fish and chips.

Cereal Crusted Cod Fish ($28)

A dish for the fish lovers, the cod fish is baked with cereal crust and set on top of seasonal vegetables braised in sesame oil and ginger shoyu broth. Its seasonings helped balanced out the good fatness of the cod fish.

Asian Five Spice Duck Leg Confit ($28)

Made via Sous vide for 8 hours straight, the cripsy duck leg is infused with five spices. A lovely presentation also helped to spike up my appetite as we take on the interesting marriage of the passionfruit sauce (served as a light dip) with the duck meat.

Marmite Canadian Pork Shoulder ($26)

This dish had been sous vide with marmite for 12 hours, and tastes like bak kwa! The meat was tender and softer than usual shoulder meats. An overall interesting dish.

BBQ Beef Short Ribs ($32)

This beef short ribs is no joke. Before being served to you, it had been sous vide for 24 hours (yes, an entire day!) straight.Served with mixed spice, this was super tender with the right amount of fat. Would recommend this to meat lovers.

Luncheon Chips ($9)

We also tried their super yummy luncheon chips! It was so thin and well fried, and it just melted away upon popping into the mouth. Goes so well with beer, would come here just for this!

Tiramisu Semi Freddo ($12)

A light ending to a heavy meal, if you've had the mains. Featuring the semi frozen mascarpone cheese layered with coffee liqueur jelly sponge topped with milo crunch and tuile biscuit.

Salted Egg Yolk Custard Molten Chocolate Cake ($14)

This was crazy nice. The warm chocolate cake was rich and lovely. Cut it open, and a beautiful yellow salted egg yolk comes flowing out.

The ice-cream on the side, while nothing to shout about, balances the richness of the cake very well. A really well-balanced, lovely dessert that I want to eat again. This is what I call a heavenly dessert! A must order when you visit!

Overall, I felt that the food here was above average, and is a place I would visit again!

This is an invited media tasting session.

This is a company that believes in eating and feeding people right. Serving up hearty food for the workers around the CBD area, eating balanced is now all served up easy - all in a bowl.

Details

Accessibility:
Approx 3-4mins walk from either Raffles Place or Telok Ayer MRT Station

Crowded at lunch. We had to wait around to get a seat. Most people had takeouts instead, to avoid the wait.

Choosing my meats! I love my red meats.

Seared and marinated Tuna, ready to be put into the bowl.

Let's Eat!
Black Cold Brew ($7)

The black brew tasted alright. It didn't exactly impress, and I only realised that the White cold brew seemed to be the popular choice around here. Totally regretted not trying it out.

El Hibaro ($16)

I had mine El Hibaro style. Striploin with salsa verde, charred veggies, wafu tomato and bean sprout salad on white sushi rice. Just that, instead of the white sushi rice, I changed it to quinoa instead!

It was so filling, just filled me up for a good couple of hours. I honestly didn't even think of snacking in the afternoon.

Make your own bowl ($16)

If you don't wish to get any from their suggested bowls, you can choose to make your own too. Here's how it works, for $16, get 1 grain, 1 protein, 1 hot veg, 2 cold veggies, 1 sauce and 1 topping.

I had my meal with a friend and she had the quinoa, roasted nuts mix, apple kimchi, steak, cucumber, pickles and mushrooms!

Can I just say, the apple kimchi is refreshing!

Low-Down
The best bit: The way it fills me up, such that I didn't feel like snacking. My El hibaro bowl tasted awesome healthy, too.

The worst bit: The price. It was pretty steep. The notion that "healthy = overpriced" is so overrated.

No longer just for couples to do on a lazy weekend morning, brunch should be for everyone who loves a good meal to begin their mornings. Clinton Street Bakery, a brunch branch from the famed New York restaurant with the same name, finally joins the brunch scene in Singapore. Despite being quite the latecomer, we're happy that they came anyway.

Accessibility:

Approx 5-7mins walk from Bugis MRT Station

Crowded scene taken about 10.30am on a Saturday morning. Seats are limited and the eatery is small and noisy. Despite that, queues are still blocking the entrance of the eatery, in wait for empty seats. Thank goodness we went there about 8 am, as soon as it opened, hence we did not have to wait at all.

Let’s
Eat!

Cafe Latte

A smooth latte to begin the meal. Plain, with no latte art form whatsoever. Some would be appreciated, though!

Sugar-cured bacon ($7)

A light hint of sweetness hits as you munch down on these crispies. A must-have here for bacon lovers.

Pancakes with warm maple butter (S$18)

We ordered the pancakes which we've heard so much about. We chose the wild blueberries as our toppings. The blueberries somehow didn't come through very well for me (flavour-wise, and I wonder why), but thank goodness the warm maple butter did.

It was smooth and was not overly sweet. It also provided a delightful flavour when added to the pancakes, which were light and fluffy. Other toppings for the pancakes include: Banana Walnut or Chocolate Chunk.

Clinton St. Omelette ($18)

Here, you can choose what you want to add within the omelette. You are given up to 2 fillings. We chose mushrooms and cheese, but the cheese flavour failed to show up but the mushrooms still tasted good with the omelette.

Well, omelettes and mushrooms, what could go wrong? But for its price, I still wished that they'd added just enough cheese to deliver the oomph it should have. The hash browns on the side tasted lovely, while I probably wouldn't have noticed even if the toasted sourdough toast had disappeared.

And in case you were wondering... no, they do not take reservations. Just like how they roll in New York. First-come-first-serve, people, first-come-first-serve.

Do also take note that only brunch items are available if you go there anytime before 11.30am. The full menu will only be available from 11.30am onwards.

Low-Down
The best bit: The fluffy pancakes!

The worse bit: The crowded space which literally cramps one's style.

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Roasted Meat

Kay Lee Roast Meat Joint was started around 1970s in Chinatown. It all began in a humble coffee shop. With inherited knowledge of uniquely spiced Roasts, they were able to gain a name for their 'Zhu Jiang' styled roasts.

Now located within Suntec City, they cater to hungry patrons looking for some good old roast meat in the modern mall. Well, at least the branch I tried it from. They also have another branch in Upper Paya Lebar.

Accessibility:

Approx 2 minutes walk from Promenade MRT Station or 5-7 minutes from City Hall MRT Station

Managed to get a 'peace out' sign from one of the chefs in the kitchen while I was taking this photo.

Let's Eat!
They first served us with a little appetiser, braised peanuts!

One of their specialties, the Prawn dumplings with mayonnaise ($9)! Dip it in the no-frills-no-thrills mayo on the side. I enjoyed this crispy, juicy snack! But I think it was quite expensive for the quantity.

We also ordered their 3 combination roast meats ($10.80). We had the roast duck, roast pork and char siew (BBQ Pork Belly). Their roasts are pretty good and lean.

Dip the duck into the sweet plum sauce and chilli. Awesome matching.

The char siew done up how they would usually roast it in Hong Kong. This is not like the Singaporean ones, which mostly have a redder edge.

With their recommendation, I also tried the Canton-style dumpling noodles ($8.80) and I loved it. The noodles tossed in their delicious sauce was altogether lovely, and the dumplings were tasty. To be honest, I kind of enjoyed this better than the roasted meat rice.

Their soup, which is served on the side, is clear and pretty comforting too. I'm craving for this now as I am writing it!
