This is my ‘Place To Go’ for modern Singapore cuisine. Located along Bukit Timah Road, near Old Holland Road, you can get there easily if you are driving/ taking a cab.
Violet Oon is Singapore’s very own ‘Celebrity Chef’ and has many a cook book written by her.
With a restaurant, its now possible to eat food cooked according to her recipes.
I came for dinner recently with my colleagues and were in for a treat.
Here are the highlights of my meal:
- Dry Laksa ($22): Fresh rice noodle tossed in Vio Laksa pesto with prawns, tau pok and bean sprouts. The dry version of the traditional laksa that you usually have. The sauce is thicker and creamier, and it was nice!
- Buah Keluak Pasta ($24): This was my favourite, where you get Buah Keluak that’s been infused with spices, minced prawns, chilli padi and coconut milk tossed in with spaghetti. A modern fusion pasta that you must order!
- Ngo Hiang ($15): Deep fried fresh prawn, crab meat, pork and water chestnut rolls seasoned with five-spice powder and wrapped in bean curd skin. The fillings were substantial and went well with the sweet sauce that came with the dish.
- Tauhu Goreng ($15): Fried bean curd with julienne cucumber and bean sprouts topped with peanut sauce. The bean curd were nice. Wished the bean sprouts were cooked, so that they don’t taste raw.
- Sambal Bendi ($9): Poached lady’s fingers in a spicy and tangy dried prawn floss paste. The prawn paste were slightly tangy and went well with the lady’s fingers.
- Garam Assam Fish ($23): Spanish Mackeral fillets n a spicy and sour gravy with pineapple slices and lady fingers. I loved the sauce. Full of ‘rempah’ (spices) that you can taste with each spoonful of gravy. However, my dinner group finished all the fish before I could sample it… So have to try this next time.
- Desserts
- Pulut Hitam with Vanilla ice cream: Interesting addition of glutinous rice in the black glutinous rice made this dessert unique. It’s the modern version of the traditional hot pulut hitam that you find elsewhere.
- Kuay Beng Kah (Tapioca Cake) with gula melaka and coconut cream: Traditional nonya kueh, that’s made into a cake and served as a slice. Served warm and drizzled with gula Melaka and coconut cream, it was divine!
- Bread and Butter Pudding with Whisky and Custard Sauce: The first thing that ‘struck’ me was the whiff of whisky from the sauce which the bread and butter pudding was drenched with. The whisky and custard sauce gave the dish a whole different flavour, compared to the ones you have had before.
The restaurant is done in a modern setting, and offers a great ambience and nice place to chill out with friends and family.

This is my ‘go-to’ place for traditional Hainanese Beef Noodles.
They were previous from the Cuppage Hawker Centre, and shifted here many many years ago. I rediscovered them years ago and after eating at this stall, I have returned many time over.
You have a choice of noodles (Chor Bee Hoon - Thick Vermicelli/ Bee Hoon - Thin Vermicelli/ Yellow Noodles/ Kway Teow – Flat white noodles). My favourite is the Chor Bee Hoon - Thick Vermicelli.
You have an option of dry noodles which comes with a thick starchy brown sauce or noodles with soup.
For your order, there are a variety of options:
- Beef Ball: $4
- Sliced Beef with Beef Ball: $4
- Sliced Beef, Beef Ball with Stomach – Tripe: $5
- Sliced Beef, Beef Ball, Stomach – Tripe with Tendon: $6
- Tendons: $7
Most times, I will order the sliced beef and Beef Ball option at $4. If I am hungry, I will go for $5.
My lunch partner couldn’t resist the tendons and ordered a tendons with soup, for sharing.
I ordered the dry version - sliced beef and Beef Ball option. The thick starchy brown sauce was full of umami, with soy and beef flavour.
The beef was well cooked and the beef balls were nice and had a good bite. The tendons were also nice and soft.
There is always a queue here and you take about 20 minutes to get to your turn. But the wait is well worth it.
Highly-Recommended!

I was at the Alexandra Village Hawker Centre on a weekend and I spotted this stall the moment I entered the hawker centre from the carpark.
This stall sells both braised duck items and braised pork items. The braised duck items include duck meat and gizzard. The braised pork items include pork belly, large intestines and more. I also spotted a braised pig’s head at the store front!
I observed that most people ordered the braised duck.
I ordered my own customised set for one, which included braised duck breast meat, 1 piece of tau kwa (beancurd) and gizzard, with a bowl of rice drizzled with braised sauce. It cost me about $6.
I liked what I ate and will recommend this stall to try.

Categories : Chinese | Hawker Centre | Porridge/Congee

The store owner used to own Teck Hin Hor Fun in Ghim Moh till a few years ago when he sold the business.
He now runs this congee stall that also sells steamed items such as Chee Cheong Fun and Glutinous Rice.
I frequent this stall almost every weekend.
My favorite orders are:
- Chee Cheong Fun: Plain chee cheong fun steamed and the chef adds his fried garlic infused oil over it. Just eaten on its own, its tasty enough. You also get the usual brown sweet sauce and chilli on the side. You can opt for 2 or 3 rolls of chee cheong fun.
- Glutinous Rice: This is very tasty and has dried shrimp and chinese sausage in it. Topped with fried shallots and fried peanuts Its very good!
- Congee: The congee is very smooth, typical of the ones you eat at fine Cantonese restaurants. You have a choice of Century Egg with pork or Fish. Both are good. Its sold for $1.80 and really value-for-money!
Highly recommended!

Good Kway Chap at Ang Mo Kio! Smile Nov 12, 2014

Categories : Singaporean | Coffeeshop | Noodles

A friend of mine brought me here for lunch recently and I was in for a treat.
This kway chap stall is located in a food court located at the bottom of a HDB black. This is also the car park that serves the popular Mellben crab beehoon that has a strong following.
The queue was about 8 people deep and it took about 10 minutes before it was our turn to order. It's self service, so you have to take the food to your own table.
Here are the highlights of our meal:
- Pork innards and egg: No off-putting smell/ taste when you bite into the large intestines, which means its well-cleaned and it was also well braised in the soya sauce. It is good!
- Mixed Platter (Small Intestines, Tau pok, pork belly): We fininshed everything on the plate. Nice!
- Salted Vegetables: Small serving for two of us. But it was more than sufficient. It was saltier than the ones I ate elsewhere and it was stewed with pork belly.
- The Kway (Flat White noodles): It was good and I had a second bowl! Recommended to eat as fast as you can, as it turns dry even though it is soupy.
The food is good and I will definitely be back again.
They also sell mixed pork soup and have white rice, if you are not into noodles.
Highly recommended!
