This indie cafe is hard to miss- just walk along jalan Kubor and you will see and you will spot their gothic dolls sitting outside. Don't let the simple looking exterior fool you, the insides are furnished with unique art pieces and decor items and comfortable seats to while your time away.

I ordered a flat white ($5.50) which is a great coffee drink that isn't overly strong or bitter but has nice aromatic notes that makes every sip so enjoyable. I also ordered a banana walnut cake to go with my coffe ($6). They do not have a display for the cakes they serve and it seems their cake offering is not constant and not reflected on the menu, so do ask the staff what they are offering for the day. Though the cake came in a dubious colour. I found I thoroughly enjoyed the moist and slightly dense texture coupled with a generous sprinkling of nuts.

This cost place is a really nice place to read a book, catch up with friends or share a meal. Would definitely come back to sample more cakes and coffee!

Song Fa Smile Nov 10, 2013

Categories : Singaporean Chinese | Restaurant | Bak Kut Teh

Song Fa bak kut teh is located opposite of Central mall and it's usually patronized by locals and tourists. The place can get crowded, so it's best to arrive early to get seats. A bowl of steaming hot bak kut teh costs about $6.50 for a small bowl. You can't miss out on the thick and tender pork ribs meat that pairs so well with black sauce and rice. The soup base is clear and peppery. Very fragrant, but not overwhelmingly herbal which leaves you wanting for more. It also pairs so well with the crispy you tiao, which you can order too. Thankfully, the soup can be refilled regularly. The staff are efficient and helpful, but it may be difficult to get their attention as they are so busy. I would also order a plate of local vegetable, Chye sim ($3.50). The portion is surprisingly generous and would definitely help make my meal a more healthy one smile

Shiok maki Smile Nov 09, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

I have been hearing a lot about the legendary shiok makis served here and was eager to try first hand to see if it lives up to its hype. I arrived at about 4pm- non peak time to skip the long queues that will eventually form outside of the restaurant. I wanted to try both generations of Shiok maki and the waitress told me I was able to order half of each to form 1 serving although I had to pay more (about $18). The difference is essentially the ingredients used- gen1 has grilled eel wrapped with lightly roasted salmon whereas gen 2 has crispy prawn wrapped on salmon. The secret is in the special yellow sauce they use which is so flavorful and addictive. It pairs very well with the sushi roll and ingredients. Dollops of fish roe top the sushi, which adds additional crunch and flavour. The sushi roll definitely lives up to its name- the shiok factor is definitely high with each bite.

Ramen Smile Nov 09, 2013

I enjoy visiting this outlet, not because of the kitschy japanese inspired decor and music played, but for the rich and deeply satisfying bowls of ramen whipped out here. Another bonus? Free flow hard boiled eggs and bean sprouts appetizers for your consumption!

I am usually undecided about what ramen to order ( they have various ramen types according to seasons) but I usually go for the Tonkotsu King Ramen ($15-17 depending on toppings ordered). The serving size is rather big- each bowl is filled with springy ramen noodles parked with rich aromatic pork broth soup that is so slurp worthy. This ramen also comes with stirred fried pork with ginger- which is any pork lovers dream come true. Tender and flavor- the pork meat pairs well with the bowl of ramen. Although they serve hard boiled eggs free, I will definitely place an additional order for their runny eggs as I love the semi runny yolks and shoyu flavoured egg whites. The service staff are generally friendly and efficient- orders are taken quickly and food came quickly too.

I enjoy eating TCC pasta and my order this time round, Tobiko scallop pasta ( about $20) is no exception. I love how the pasta is done al dente- chewy and firm, and how it soaks up the fragrant flavor of the Japanese dressing. The portion of ingredients were generous- you will find shimeji mushrooms, together with dollops of Tobiko egg roe- that are crunchy and bursting with flavor. The crowning top is probably the huge and fresh scallop pieces. Every bite of this dish is heavenly. Highly recommended!
