THW is a must go to place for dim sum for Singaporeans- just look at the snaking queues outside the restaurant during its opening hours. The hype for 1 star Michellin dim sum has evidently not died down, so if you want a piece of dim sum here and not wait, it's best to come during non peak hours like afternoon 3pm, where the waiting time is shorter. I waited for a bout 20mins to get in.

Not all dim sum is good- but the big 4 heavenly kings are definite must try.

Baked bun with BBQ pork ($4.50) is perhaps the best dish I had. Savoury, sweet char Siew chunks encased in a crumbly, buttery outer shell- makes the ultimate char Siew bun/pastry'

Steamed egg cake ($3.50) is a soft, fluffy piping hot cake with a slight sweet, almost caramalized flavour in it! Every bite is delightful.

Vermicelli roll with pigs liver $5.50 is a unique Cheong fun dish. I felt the pigs liver was a little over cooked, hence slightly tough, but the liver flavor came out nonetheless. The flour skin is utterly silky smooth that goes well with the soy sauce provided.

Carrot cake $4.50 was an ok dish- each slab was glistening in oil, but the sides were pan fried to a nice crispy golden brown.

The problem with dining here is probably enduring the long wait time and squeezing in the packed restaurant. Service staff were generally efficient and readily gave pack out boxes for our unfinished dim sum.

Ciel Patisserie is located in a relatively quiet hougang neighbourhood, under a block of HDB flats. It is situated between neighbourhood provision shops and clinics which is rather unusual for such a cafe. Step into the cafe and you will forget about being in the neighborhood- the decor is minimalist- with a corner designated to showing off their pastries and a couple of tables and chairs for customers. The place is not very big, but I was able to get a table as it was not crowded.

Generally, cakes and pastries offered here are affordable, below $6 but with a caveat, the portions are exquisite and small. Well you can't have everything.

I ordered Fuji ($5.20) which is a delightful pyramidal green tea cake with lychee pudding embedded in the core of the cake. The slightly bitter matcha taste goes well with the sweet and refreshing bursts of lychee pudding- making this dessert remarkably delicious.

Would definitely drop by next time and check out their other offerings!

Tamoya Smile Nov 09, 2013

Categories : Japanese

I was excited to have another choice of eatery serving authentic sanuki udon from Japan. Tamoya imports its udon and broth from Japan and a bowl of steaming hot fresh udon is one of the most satisfying japanese noodle dish to have.

The ordering method is fairly simple and do it yourself. You first place an order for the type and size of serving of udon you desire. I ordered a regular basic Kake udon ($4.80) which was essentially basic udon served in rich, clear golden broth. I enjoy their udon as it achieves a nice chewy and firm texture which reminds me of the udon i had  in Japan. This is unlike some other restaurants with too soggy or too hard udon noodles.

You move on to the next station where you can select your sides ranging from between $1-2. I went a little crazy with their wide spread of fried and tempura items. I ordered shiitake mushrooms, kitsune, kaki age, eggplant and tempura- while keeping my bill just slight over $10! I felt their vegetable items were fresh, but I did find the fried tempura items to be a little soggy- perhaps they have been placed out in the open for too long.

The is also another counter where you can place your orders for more side dishes or sushi- but I decided to give it a miss- I already had too much in my plate!

After payment, and being served by this friendly japanese lady- I proceeded to help myself at the condiments bar. I added my favourite toppings such as spring onions, radish seaweed and tempura flakes- the amounts are not restricted and you can help yourself to whatever that's available!

Overall I enjoyed my bowl of udon- for the chewy texture, slurp worth udon noodles and the wide range of ingredients and toppings available!

Kith Smile Nov 09, 2013

Visited Kith Cafe on a weekday afternoon just before the lunch crowd comes in. The cafe itself occupies a small shop space in park mall but extends itself to an outside seating area. It was a rainy day and it was actually quite cool and comfortable to sit outside. I ordered a Big Breakfast ($16.50). For this set you get to choose how you want your eggs and toast to be done. I decided to go for scrambled eggs with brioche. The scrambled eggs were served hot, and of a nice slightly runny and wet consistency that went well with the crunchy brioche. The set also came with generous portions of bacon and smoked bratwurst that were cooked to perfection and weren't too oily. These went so well with the flavorful and fragrant sautéed mushrooms. The set was indeed "big" and satisfying.

I also had their 3/4 latte ($4) to sample their coffee blends. It's called 3/4 latte as this drink comes with a usual shot of espresso but with less milk. The portion turned out to be small, but it was satisfying nonetheless- the coffee was not overly strong and it was not overwhelming bitter.

Service was also great here- the service staff have been very polite and warm throughout my stay.

Marshmallow tree Smile Nov 09, 2013

Visited this quaint cafe located in the quiet estate of telok blangah. It is located under a block of flats, but it's walking distance from the exit ramp of the mrt station. The place may be a little small but it is decorated into a cosy inviting place- there is a nice swing at a corner and you won't miss the giant domo kun.

I ordered a waffle condenser ($5) which is a localised version of waffles topped with sweet condensed milk and chocolatey milo powder. It was an interesting combination and it was quite tasty while the waffle is warm and fluffy. A waffle version of milo dinosaur would taste like this. But after a while, it got a little too sticky and sweet for me.

I also placed an order for earl grey tea latte($4.50) which was a nice milky tea addition to wash down the waffle. The earl grey tea had a refreshing bergamot citrus flavour which definitely help perk me up. All drinks come with a lightly toasted marshmallow (hence their name I suppose!) marshmallow was toasted to perfection- warm, soft and chewy! I would want to try their marshmallow incorporated dishes in future!
