Mellben OK Jun 15, 2013

We visited Mellben Seafood for a taste of their famous claypot crab bee hoon. We went to their branch at Toa Payoh instead of the main restaurant at AMK. We arrived before 6pm for dinner and were able to find seats, but when dinner crowd comes, do expect to wait.

Perhaps I was setting my expectations too high, but I was not very impressed with the Claypot crab bee hoon served. I did enjoy slurping on the smooth noodles with the rich creamy crab broth for the first few mouthfuls, but I did find the soup a little too salty for my liking subsequently. The crabs were huge and fresh though. If you really like the soup broth, the staff can top up the soup too.

Dessert Bowl Smile Jun 15, 2013

Whenever I pass by the Serangoon Gardens area for a meal, I will definitely stop by Dessert Bowl to have a bowl of their famed Durain Mousse ($5). Dessert bowl is located on the second floor of a row of shophouses with OCBC and some pubs. Walk closer and you will smell an unmistakable scent of durian wafting from this shop.

The Durian Mousse is a refreshing cold dessert pureed from durian flesh. It's really smooth with the occasional durian bits embedded inside the mousse. This is really delicious and will definitely make any durian lover go crazy. I did not find this dessert overly heavy or jelat, I could finish one bowl myself; I'm not sure if some people might find having too much durian overwhelming, but judging from the emptied bowls and satisfied looks of customers around, I guess it's a no =)

Wimbly Lu Smile Jun 15, 2013

You will not miss Wimbly Lu- there is a nice vintage red beetle parked in front of the shop and it's part of their logo!

I stepped into the place and was quite surprised at how small the place actually was. Perhaps it was almost full house and there were many people which made the place seemed even more congested and small. It is nonetheless very cosy, with wood decor which opens up behind to a morr airy, glasshouse like feel behind. Too bad I was given a seat nearer to the entrance so I didn't get to fully enjoy the interiors behind.

Wimbly Lu is known for their chocolate desserts and I wanted to try something special, so I ordered their really unique sounding Root Beer Cake with vanilla ice cream. The dessert was served in a martini glass, really cute, but unfortunately the portion was pretty small. The cake was really moist and did have a slight root beer taste to it, though not very strong. Definitely went very well with the ice cold vanilla ice cream.

Fat Cat Smile Jun 15, 2013

Tucked in the corner of Jalan Riang is this nice bistro place that houses a unique mix of food choices. The Fat Cat houses three different type of food shops- Thai, North Indian and French Italian. It was so strange to be offered a menu that has a combination of food choices from around the world, all at one location. Those who can't decide what to eat would have lots of choices to made available here.

The restaurant is an open concept bistro place that make for really good casual dining or just while away the afternoon. We sat outside and despite the fans, I did feel a little hot and stuffy (especially after the walking in the sun), so I decided to order a nice apple cider to cool down.

I popped by on a weekday afternoon, where they offer special set lunches. I decided to try the Indian food and ordered their North Indian Set A ($10.90) which comes with a choice of 2 dishes and basmati rice or naan. I choose to have fish curry and butter chicken sides together with rice. The fish curry was not too bad, though I might have found it a little too fishy for my liking. The butter chicken caught me by surprise- it is essentially chicken pieces cooked in a tomato-butter gravy. I was initially a little worried about how the tomato butter gravy would turn out, but I actually preferred this to the fish curry. It had a nice rich tangy tomato taste to the sauce which went really well with the tender chicken pieces and basmati rice.

4 Fingers Smile Jun 15, 2013

Categories : Korean | Fast Food | Halal | Korean Fried Chicken

There was a queue at this popular korean style crispy chicken shop that stretched outside of the shop when we arrived. Undeterred, we joined to the queue to finally lay our hands on the famed 4Fingers crispy chicken. We ordered at 1 drumstick and 3 wings combo set for $9.95 and requested for soy garlic flavour. The chicken wings do not disappoint- the layer of chicken skin was deep fried, but not crispy. And you could taste the seasoning coating on the chicken- very flavourful and very addictive. The combo meal came with fries with seaweed seasoning and a drink.
