Love the Crêpe Suzette! OK Dec 25, 2010
Categories : French | Restaurant

Crêperie des Arts is the other only authentic French crêperie in Singapore besides Entre-Nous Crêperie. A comparison is inevitable, especially since I had the crêpes from both places within a short time frame. Desserts are fabulous at both, but for savoury crêpes, I’ll head to Entre-Nous.

Saint-Caradec ($20.50++) wasn’t as good as we expected it to be. Scallops were nice and plump but I wouldn’t have known they’ve been flambéed with Calvados if I didn’t reread the menu. Served with a creamy leeks fondue, this was too heavy for our liking.

We much preferred Pont-Aven ($19.90++), a lighter crêpe filled with cooked salmon and spinach, though it was nothing special. Overall, I find that the crêpes here are much more oily (i.e. crêpes turned soggy real fast) than Entre-Nous’s, perhaps cuz they use a generous amount of butter here.

The Crêpe Suzette ($19.50++) redeemed the evening and it was an entertaining show as the (very pretty) lady boss put on the finishing touch at our table with a flourish of Grand Marnier and flame. I like this! Especially the pairing of pear ice cream with orange pulp in caramel. Clever.

Good crepes Smile Dec 25, 2010

All thanks to The Kensington Crêperie, I’ve had a massive craving for crêpes when I got back from London. Sadly though, there’s not many authentic crêperies in Singapore. In fact, that’s already an understatement since I think there’s only two in town, both owned and managed by French couples. One is Crêperie des Arts and the other is Entre-Nous Crêperie.

The crêpes here are good, nothing as fantastic as TKC, but still good enough to make me happy. I like the myriad of textures and flavours in the Entre-nous crêpe ($18.70+). Very interesting combination of mashed avocado, garlic, cream, tomatoes and prawns!

Stephanie’s Favourite ($16.80+) is one of the signatures here and worth trying if you like roasted chicken, sweet caramelised onions and tangy wholegrain mustard~

One thing I notice about the crêpes is that they are spread too thinly, hence causing lots of unsightly “porkmarks”, haha. Sometimes, being too thin is not ideal (for crêpes and ladies)!

Ok, who likes salted caramel? If you do, it’s a must (I repeat, a MUST) to try Geraldine’s Favourite ($14.90+), a sweet crêpe filled with bits of cooked apple, homemade salted butter caramel and a scoop of chocolate ice cream (vanilla by default). Seriously, the salted caramel is incredible, you must try it to believe! Just for this, I will return.

Normal OK Dec 25, 2010
Categories : European | Restaurant | Pasta

Dining on pseudo-crêpes in pseudo-alfresco style, that pretty much sums up what Out of the Pan is all about.

The crêpes ain’t French nor crappy, just normal Popiah-like westernised savoury spring rolls with all sorts of fillings, ranging from steamed seabass in black bean sauce ($17++), tangy spicy yogurt with crabmeat, prawns and scallops ($16.50++), smoked salmon with creamy pistachio cheese ($16++), and wok-fried butter cream prawns with curry leaves and chilli padi ($16.50++).

Nothing was particularly outstanding and since prices are comparative to Crêperie des Arts and Entre-Nous Crêperie, I’d rather go to those authentic crêperies anytime. Trust me, you will taste a world of difference!

Still not impressed OK Oct 28, 2010

Categories : Japanese | Hotel | Sushi/Sashimi

My first visit to Nogawa a year ago didn't leave me with a good impression. I found the food to be average and service was rather poor. A year later, I went back again and was still not impressed.

I won't elaborate on the "normal" dishes.. Here are some of the food which I like well enough but can also be found elsewhere:

1. Anago: Love this! I just love eel, no matter how it's prepared so I'm pretty biased haha. This was so soft, yum.

2. Uni sushi: The whole combination of well-seasoned rice and buttery melt-in-the-mouth sea urchin is excellent.

3. Choya jelly: Very strong choya fragrance and the jelly was firm to the bite.

Get the crabcakes! Smile Oct 28, 2010

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Bars/Lounges | Hotel | Buffet

Yay, I've found the bestest-best crabcakes in Singapore (by my standard, that is). The crabcakes at Mezza9 are solid. Big round balls of shredded crabmeat fried perfectly. Not oily at all too! And there's no potato in sight anywhere, wonderful! This is the real deal. I love how tasty this is.. A little spicy, a little salty, simply delicious! Portions are big enough to be a main course too.

The tuna steak was average. It was overcooked the first time but service recovery was fast and a second one was delivered to our table within minutes. The oven dried tomatoes were lovely but the steak itself was quite dry. Not something I'd get again.
