Don’t scoff at anything with the word “vegetarian” on it, please. Because the Vegetarian Organic Pancake Lasagna ($16.50) was unbelievably good! Thickness was just right with layers of cheese and zucchini in between the pasta sheets. The magic probably lies in the savoury ”special sauce” which has a tinge of sweetness I suspect comes from applesauce.

High carbs, high fats, low protein. Healthy? Nope. Delicious? Absolutely!

I like hearty salads that prominently feature grains or legumes as they are filling enough as a main dish. Go ahead and feel virtuous with the Les Salades ($15.50) with Organic brown rice, chicken, egg, tomato and pistachio. Heavily spiced and seasoned with herbs, it sounds (and IS) so healthy!

Lovely shortcake Smile Oct 28, 2010

I had cod brandade for lunch everyday while in Verona and Venice not too long ago so I was eager to find out how the homemade version ($8++) here measures up, especially when this is a laborious dish not commonly found in Singapore. While the smooth texture was spot-on, the saltiness was way over the top, even when paired with the accompanying grilled bruschetta.

I like the whole combination of pan-seared Hokkaido scallops ($24++) with jerky-like bacon crisps and balsamic reduction on a bed of eggplant caviar which is somewhat like the Lebanese baba ghanoush.

The frozen ‘deconstructed’ strawberry shortcake ($14++) was such a pretty sight to behold. Love the home-churned strawberry ice cream which was so natural-tasting and had a fabulous creamy mouthfeel. Nothing beats homemade ice cream! And the layers of soft sponge and flaky pastry were a great contrast.

Nice bread OK Oct 28, 2010

Not too long ago, I headed to Simply Bread at Cluny Court for (what else but) sandwiches. The bakery is very plain and simple, exactly the sort of place where you can just relax and lose yourself in a good book on a lazy quiet afternoon.

Of course, with a name like that, bread takes centre stage here. There’s a good variety ranging from sourdough granary to rye walnut. If you don’t want to buy a whole loaf home, just take a seat, order a sandwich from the menu and choose whichever bread you like from the display counter.

Smoked salmon would always be my first choice but sadly, that’s not on the menu. So it was tuna salad on sourdough rye ($8.50) instead. I wanted it toasted but the staff advised against it as it’s freshly baked bread meant to be eaten as it is. Basically, this was just water-packed tuna mixed with a little mayonnaise—something I can easily make at home. The sourdough rye, on the other hand, was lovely! Soft and subtly sour with an earthy rye flavour.

The smoked ham and mature cheddar cheese on ciabatta ($9) looked good too! Initially, rustic white was chosen but the staff suggested ciabatta instead as ham+cheese+ciabatta is an ideal match. It’s great that recommendations are so forthcoming so that diners can better appreciate the beauty of bread and sandwiches!

Though the bread is good, it’s going to be a long while before I’ll go back again as I much prefer the bread from Barcook and Cedele. And FYI, to date, my favourite sandwich bakery is still Freshly Baked cuz they make a really mean smoked salmon with tomato confit sandwich that’s out of this world!

I like this place! Smile Oct 28, 2010

Housed in a beautifully restored, two-storey, black-and-white colonial-style bungalow at Rochester Park, Krish’s food revolves around ‘South Asia influenced European cuisine’, or more specifically, Indian-accented modern European food. Exotic, isn’t it?

I always do my homework before patronising a restaurant so that I know what’s good and what not to order. The spiced carrot ravioli ($16++) has been raved by many online so I wanted a taste of it too! 4 stuffed pasta parcels with a scattering of pomegranate seeds in a sinful ginger-brown butter emulsion that’s surprisingly light and sweet. Very lovely indeed! Now, if only there’s more filling in each pasta…

Instead of risotto, Krish pairs seared U.S. diver scallops ($45++) with truffled lentils and parsley yoghurt. While the scallops were salty and just a tad overcooked, the lentils were wonderful! Soft, almost mushy texture and the flavour of truffles was unmistakably bold. Portion was small enough to be a starter though.

Desserts are not as innovative as the starters and mains. While the presentation of the blackcurrant parfait ($14++) reminds me of the version from 2am: dessert bar, Krish’s rendition is accompanied with a scoop of cardamom-coconut ice cream (I could only make out the taste of the latter) and chocolate sable.

So many online reviews have praised Absinthe for its food and service that my expectations were raised correspondingly.

I liked the salad of pan fried almond coated king prawns, mesclun and smoked ocean trout ($23++). Also had half a serving of fish and seafood bouillabaisse scented with absinthe, saffron aioli and croutons ($40++ for full portion). The house signature and rightly so! Very hearty and aromatic~ Roasted black cod with saffron potatoes and sauteed baby spinach in pernod sauce ($39++) was so-so.

Of course, we had to try Absinthe’s namesake — the absinthe alcohol. It’s a distilled, highly alcoholic spirit that’s also known as “the green fairy”.

It’s prepared by placing a sugar cube on top of a slotted spoon which is then placed on the glass filled with a shot of absinthe. Ice-cold water is dripped over the sugar cube until it’s melted completely.

Sorry to say this but it tastes awful! Definitely not something I want to try again.
