Disappointing Experience Cry May 01, 2013

After a good morning walk at Fort Canning Park, we found ourselves in Clarke Quay looking for a satisfying lunch venue. I suggested to my friends that we try out Boss BarBQ near the Clarke Quay taxi stand, as I heard about its popularity at night due to its live performances.

There was no customer at all when we entered the restaurant, probably because Clarke Quay is a famous night spot, so it's a ghost town at 1pm in broad daylight? tongue Anyway we were brought in by a Filipino waitress, & the first thing that caught my attention was the restaurant is pretty small with a stage in front & reeks of smoke. sad

The restaurant is famous for its fried chicken & barbecue meat, so we ordered a plate of 9 pieces of Boss Fried Chicken to share. Too bad can't mix spicy and original flavours for the 9-piece plate, only 18-piece plate then you can mix the flavours. -_-"

The 3 accompanying sauces to the Boss Fried Chicken were mustard, chilli and spiced salt. My favourite was the spiced salt! The chicken were very crispy too. Good!

We also ordered a Kimchi Pancake and Army Stew to share.
Kimchi Pancake $28

Army Stew $38

Army Stew $38

We felt the Kimchi Pancake was a bit overcooked till "chao da" (burnt)... The sides were too crispy, did they deep fry the pancake together with the fried chicken? -_-" That size is also definitely not worth $28++. sad

As for the Army Stew, we were hoping for a redder coloured soup base so was somewhat disappointed. Fortunately it wasn't as bland as I thought but it's not wonderful either. One of my friends who can't take spicy food said she liked it though. But for 2 of us who can take spicy stuff, this somehow lacked some kick.

Our final bill came to about $92 after 15% discount with Citibank credit card (note that the 15% discount doesn't apply to the Boss Fried Chicken , wonder why...). We don't think we will go back again as for the hefty price, we did not even have free side dishes or free flow of Korean tea, and the service was very lousy. Initially there was only our table and shortly after we ordered, another group of 3 came. But even then, it was just 2 tables & the waitress still could forget what we ordered and the way she served us was pretty careless as well. Oh and talking about the Korean tea, we saw from the menu that it is chargeable at $6/cup (or maybe it's per head, since the tea came in a pot for each table?)! The price of side dishes was not indicated on the menu but I confirmed with the waitress that it was chargeable, so we told her to remove. This is quite horrible isn't it? Real Korean restaurants NEVER charge for side dishes & the barley tea! sad

So unless you are feeling filthy rich, in Clarke Quay & just can't eat anything else other than Korean food, then maybe you may go there, but just be mentally prepared for the bill & lack of service... shocked

Mediterranean Dinner Cry Mar 22, 2012

It was a Monday evening when we visited Medz at about 6.30pm, and the restaurant was barely filled with customers! Since there were plenty of seats available, we took our time to browse through the various stalls first before we decide where to sit. A bit disappointing that there were not many stalls, compared to Marche.

My friend decided to settle on the stall selling Duck Leg Confit while I settled on the Greek/ Italian stall selling calzones, pizzas and pastas.

I didn't try the Duck Leg Confit ($12+) as I don't like to eat duck meat, but according to my friend, it was quite good, although she had doubts about it when she first saw her dish which was so tiny. tongue

I had some of the Portobello Mushroom ($3+) and we thought it was average, not fantastic but just like the usual mushrooms that you eat in other restaurants.

My Fish & Mushroom Calzone ($8+) took more than the promised time frame to be ready. The chef had told me that it would not take longer than 10 minutes, but my friend almost finished her confit yet my calzone was still not ready! At first bite, the calzone was pretty bland. However after I dipped it into the sauce (tasted like tomato sauce) it was much better. The calzone didn't look too filling but I guess it is just the right size for ladies.

I also ordered a Mille Feuille ($5.50+) as my dessert, as it looked very pretty at the dessert stall. However it was quite a disappointing piece of dessert as the pastry was too crumby and not fragrant. The fruit filling was not too generous too. Quite disappointed with this really, not a value for money dessert. sad

So if I were to choose, I don't think I will pop by this restaurant to try its other food stalls next time, given the average food standard and not really worthy food prices. Thankfully there was only GST charge and no service charge.

Oh, 1 thing to mention is the lack of beverage choices here! Yes there were many types of beer available (in fact one-for-one), but non-alcoholic beverages were scarce and expensive! We bought a bottle of Evian Mineral Water each, which costed us $2.30+ each. sad Guess only my Fish & Mushroom Calzone was the most reasonably priced amongst all the food & drinks we had....

There was a special promotion in October for WAH! Korea Club members for its Korean BBQ buffet - an additional 10% off the already-discounted price of $17.90++ (original dinner buffet price at $28.90++). Since it's so near my office, I decided to meet my friends for dinner here.

The restaurant exterior didn't look too appealing. While we waited to be seated in the restaurant, no waiter wanted to bring us to our seats for quite a while, although they were just walking around & definitely looked in our direction! This kind of "welcome" already made us feel not-so-welcome. -_-" Finally when a Filipino waitress came and brought us in, we were given a table just next to the entrance, & not allowed to change seats because "more private seating reserved for regular customers".

As we hadn't catch up for quite a while, we started chatting once seated, while waiting for someone to guide us how to start the buffet (since it was our first time). Again no 1 bothered to come and guide us! sad It was till at least 5 minutes later the same waitress who brought us to our table, came hurriedly and told us to help ourselves to the food at the buffet counter. We had to self-serve at this restaurant, including getting water and utensils! Couldn't she brief us immediately when we were seated? sad

I went to the food counter to get the meat for BBQ, and was quite disappointed at the variety available. Only pork, chicken and beef in marinated and spicy versions were available. For seafood, only prawns and sotong were available. There were also hotdogs and sweet corn. The side dishes didn't look too impressive too. Oh but the Kimchi was very spicy, I choked on the spice a few times haha. There were ice cream and cut watermelon slices at 1 corner. The other corner was occupied by cooked rice and miso soup. I only took 3 pictures of the food as I was too disappointed to take more. Haha...

The bean paste sauce here was very salty and not spicy at all. I didn't know and took a saucer full of the sauce, and immediately regretted after trying as the meats were quite flavourful and didn't need much salty sauce already. So I added kimchi into my BBQ meat wrapped with vegetable instead for the spicy taste, and that's when I was choked by the kimchi haha. I liked the coleslaw, as it was crunchy and chewy, probably because of the vermicelli they added I guess. I didn't eat the prawns and sotong, but according to my friends, they weren't very fresh. As for the other meats, chicken was the nicer one.

After few rounds of meat, we were very full and so tried the miserable dessert section - only 2 types of ice cream and 1 type of fruit available. The ice cream was very hard and we had a tough time scooping up! Luckily they tasted quite good afterall haha. By then it was around 9.30pm already and we felt like we smelt of BBQ meat ourselves, think it's due to the poor ventilation.

Overall, I would not recommend friends craving for authentic and yummy Korean BBQ to come here, especially if it's at the original price. There is also a serious lack of service in this restaurant yet they still have 10% service charge! Maybe to them changing the BBQ plates warrants the service charge (they changed 3x for us) -_-"

Japanese Spicy Ramen! Cry Dec 08, 2011
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen

It was a cloudy Saturday afternoon when the gang decided to meet up to celebrate the birthdays of the October babes. As Orchard was expected to be very crowded, we chose Millenia Walk as our lunch venue, so as to be away from the weekend hustle, and saw this small ramen shop on the third level of Millenia Walk that sells only ramen. It looks traditional & authentic enough so we went in.

There wasn't a wide selection of ramen available in the menu, about 6-8 choices at most. I picked the Dragon Ramen, which is supposed to be a basic ramen topped by ground meat with red peppers in the tonkatsu soup.

Sadly, it wasn't very spicy, just a portion of the minced meat that tasted a bit spicy, like the Chinese bean paste sauce. The more I drank the soup, the more salty it felt. 2 in the gang ordered the Chasu Ramen ($15++) and another friend ordered the Basic Ramen ($12++), and we all agreed that the soup base was too salty for good.

The restaurant is pretty small and ventilation very bad. I am usually not too fussy about ventilation or worrying about how my clothes will smell when I leave the restaurant, but this one was really bad! Maybe that's their way of ensuring a fast turnover of customers so that they can earn more lol.

The common consensus with the gang after our lunch was it will not be our first choice for a meal when we visit Millenia Walk next time again...

Not so nice Wendy's Cry Sep 29, 2011
Categories : American | Fast Food | Burgers and Sandwiches | Kids-Friendly

I had never tried the fast food at Wendy's before but since there was much buzz when it first opened in Singapore, upon knowing that it is now available at Yishun 10, I decided to try out its small combo meal.
My small combo meal - 1/4 lb. single combo

My small combo meal - 1/4 lb. single combo

I ordered takeaway so that I could eat in the comfort of my own house, in front of the TV.tongue On the way home I ate a few fries while it's still piping hot. Gosh, it was very salty! When I ate it at home about half an hour later, it had turned soggy, but the saltiness seemed to have disappeared? haha...

As for the 1/4 lb. single burger, I like the bun which has a fragrant sesame taste, not like the usual burgers in other fast food joints that is just a "normal bun". However the beef patty was nothing to rave about. I mean it's not bad, pretty tender & well done. But for the price one pays, & all the hype with this fast food joint, I expect more from this famous burger. I think probably Burger King beef patties can do an equally good, if not better, job than this.

Conclusion about Wendy's 1/4 lb. single combo is, it's just a normal burger meal. Probably not so great for the price one pays, in view of intense competition from other fast food joints. 1 can either go to Burger King to get the beef burger fix & pay similar price, or fork out a bit more for Carl's Junior.

So, unless I happen to be in the Wendy's vicinity, I wun go all out to find one to satisfy my craving.
