Japanese Curry - Oishii!  Smile Dec 12, 2011

Categories : Japanese

I heard that Coco Ichibanya is a popular Japanese curry chain back in its home with about 30 years' history & its new outlet in Singapore is attracting the Japanese natives to the restaurant. So since we were in the vicinity, we decided to go to 313 for some authentic curry rice.

We were lucky that there was hardly anyone in the restaurant when we reached there around 11.30am. There was an ongoing promotion of 10% discount till 30 Nov 2011, so we guess it's not crowded only during weekdays? The menu didn't look too appetizing actually, and the waiter & waitress were not very attentive too. We changed our table to a more comfortable one, and they didn't bother to bring the menu to us! Even when I stood up to self-help myself with the menu on the table that we had vacated, the waitress simply "stared" at us & didn't move an inch.shocked

Fortunately the food was actually great although the color and presentation weren't too appealing! Fragrant & flavoursome curry. We could choose the spiciness level of the curry & as I read the advice on the papers some weeks back, we only asked for level 1 which was "standard". As we ate the curry, it became spicier on the tongue haha.

The only not-so-good part about this dish is the pork cutlet wasn't crispy enough & they weren't very generous with the serving. The Japanese restaurant at Takashimaya B1 - Romankan Yokohama, was better in this aspect. Nonetheless, I would say you can still try out this restaurant if you love Japanese curry. smile

Have u ever heard of, or even eaten the gigantic 8-inch burger from Empire State Restaurant? This was what attracted me to the restaurant at Causeway Point for dinner hehe. But no, we weren't so adventurous to try out the 8-inch burger lol. Instead we ordered the House Burger ($12.90++) and a Teriyaki Pizza ($12.90++) to share.

Both main courses tasted great! The House Burger bun was not the typical bun that you get, but filled with oatmeal! At least it reduces the level of guilt of eating such an "unhealthy" beef burger haha. The Teriyaki Pizza chicken slices were well-marinated. Although the pizza was not the thin crust type, but it was still good. However towards the end of our meal we had no choice but to leave the crust alone and only ate the topping as we were really very full by then. tongue

Coincidentally a couple at the next table ordered the gigantic burger & to our "horror" the plate was really huge! We could see the "struggling" looks on their faces when they left. Must be soooo full! lol......

I would love to go to Empire State Restaurant again to try out its other food as the food is yummy and they come in big portions (think American portion haha) = value for $! Maybe next time if I can gather 4 people to dine at the restaurant, we may just try the gigantic burger hehe...

Good Old Korean Dinner Smile Dec 12, 2011

Categories : Korean

We were craving for Korean food but wanted to escape the packed town area on a Friday night, so decided to try out this Korean restaurant at Novena.

Initially my friend craved for Ginseng Chicken Soup, but as the serving looked huge from the menu picture and I didn't want that, she gave up the idea & we ordered a Dakgalbi to share instead. Dakgalbi is actually stir-fried spicy chicken on the frying wok. It was great! The kimchi side dish was good as well, not too sour. But 1 thing weird is we didn't understand why they gave the braised eggs as one of the side dishes? Localised Korean side dish? Lol...... Oh btw we were told that we were only allowed 1 free refill of the side dishes.

When we were almost finishing our Dakgalbi, I thought it would be good if we can try at least 1 other dish from this restaurant, just to gauge the standard tongue So I picked the Kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake) as it would not be as filling as other main dishes, but gosh, the pancake was so big! It's pretty nice too but still we couldn't finish the whole pancake as we were really full after eating a few slices each.

However one thing that we couldn't resist to stop eating was the black beans! It was really good! It didn't come as one of the side dishes in our first round. So when it appeared in the second serving, we were so happy with it that we requested to change 1 of the side dishes that we didn't want to eat anymore haha.

I would recommend friends to visit this Korean restaurant if they want some simple yet traditional Korean fare. smile

There was a special promotion in October for WAH! Korea Club members for its Korean BBQ buffet - an additional 10% off the already-discounted price of $17.90++ (original dinner buffet price at $28.90++). Since it's so near my office, I decided to meet my friends for dinner here.

The restaurant exterior didn't look too appealing. While we waited to be seated in the restaurant, no waiter wanted to bring us to our seats for quite a while, although they were just walking around & definitely looked in our direction! This kind of "welcome" already made us feel not-so-welcome. -_-" Finally when a Filipino waitress came and brought us in, we were given a table just next to the entrance, & not allowed to change seats because "more private seating reserved for regular customers".

As we hadn't catch up for quite a while, we started chatting once seated, while waiting for someone to guide us how to start the buffet (since it was our first time). Again no 1 bothered to come and guide us! sad It was till at least 5 minutes later the same waitress who brought us to our table, came hurriedly and told us to help ourselves to the food at the buffet counter. We had to self-serve at this restaurant, including getting water and utensils! Couldn't she brief us immediately when we were seated? sad

I went to the food counter to get the meat for BBQ, and was quite disappointed at the variety available. Only pork, chicken and beef in marinated and spicy versions were available. For seafood, only prawns and sotong were available. There were also hotdogs and sweet corn. The side dishes didn't look too impressive too. Oh but the Kimchi was very spicy, I choked on the spice a few times haha. There were ice cream and cut watermelon slices at 1 corner. The other corner was occupied by cooked rice and miso soup. I only took 3 pictures of the food as I was too disappointed to take more. Haha...

The bean paste sauce here was very salty and not spicy at all. I didn't know and took a saucer full of the sauce, and immediately regretted after trying as the meats were quite flavourful and didn't need much salty sauce already. So I added kimchi into my BBQ meat wrapped with vegetable instead for the spicy taste, and that's when I was choked by the kimchi haha. I liked the coleslaw, as it was crunchy and chewy, probably because of the vermicelli they added I guess. I didn't eat the prawns and sotong, but according to my friends, they weren't very fresh. As for the other meats, chicken was the nicer one.

After few rounds of meat, we were very full and so tried the miserable dessert section - only 2 types of ice cream and 1 type of fruit available. The ice cream was very hard and we had a tough time scooping up! Luckily they tasted quite good afterall haha. By then it was around 9.30pm already and we felt like we smelt of BBQ meat ourselves, think it's due to the poor ventilation.

Overall, I would not recommend friends craving for authentic and yummy Korean BBQ to come here, especially if it's at the original price. There is also a serious lack of service in this restaurant yet they still have 10% service charge! Maybe to them changing the BBQ plates warrants the service charge (they changed 3x for us) -_-"

Japanese Spicy Ramen! Cry Dec 08, 2011
Categories : Japanese | Restaurant | Ramen

It was a cloudy Saturday afternoon when the gang decided to meet up to celebrate the birthdays of the October babes. As Orchard was expected to be very crowded, we chose Millenia Walk as our lunch venue, so as to be away from the weekend hustle, and saw this small ramen shop on the third level of Millenia Walk that sells only ramen. It looks traditional & authentic enough so we went in.

There wasn't a wide selection of ramen available in the menu, about 6-8 choices at most. I picked the Dragon Ramen, which is supposed to be a basic ramen topped by ground meat with red peppers in the tonkatsu soup.

Sadly, it wasn't very spicy, just a portion of the minced meat that tasted a bit spicy, like the Chinese bean paste sauce. The more I drank the soup, the more salty it felt. 2 in the gang ordered the Chasu Ramen ($15++) and another friend ordered the Basic Ramen ($12++), and we all agreed that the soup base was too salty for good.

The restaurant is pretty small and ventilation very bad. I am usually not too fussy about ventilation or worrying about how my clothes will smell when I leave the restaurant, but this one was really bad! Maybe that's their way of ensuring a fast turnover of customers so that they can earn more lol.

The common consensus with the gang after our lunch was it will not be our first choice for a meal when we visit Millenia Walk next time again...
