A taste of Thailand Smile Jul 18, 2013

Categories : Thai | Restaurant

My friends and I wanted to try this Thai Food place along coronation road the other day, but unfortunately, it was closed ): We begin walking towards Island Creamery which was further down the road but chanced upon this Thai food place which serves western food as well. The aroma that was wafting out of the eatery beckoned us towards it like a bear to honey. The friendly lady owner waved us in with a menu, very prepared to serve us! Upon knowledge that we were students, she quickly presented us with the student menu where dishes were a few dollars cheaper than the normal price.

The eatery has 2 levels, the top floor is a tiny space which can sit roughly 15-20 people while the bottom level housed a much bigger space. As we were complaining about the scorching heat, the owner informed us that the top level has air-conditioning! Yay! The tiny space was quite dark (hence the bad lighting of the photo) but pictures of Thailand was plastered on the walls which created an unnatural "Thai environment".

The food came fairly quickly after we placed our orders. I must say I was a little skeptical about the taste of the food as the food came almost instantly.

I ordered the Seafood Phad Thai ($6.50) and I must say I'm truly impressed! The noodles are cooked to a perfect texture. They aren't mushy and too soft but a perfect consistency that gives just the right amount of resistance when bitten into. The chef uses just the right amount of tamarind, fish sauce, and other spices to flavor the phad thai. I did not add the lime as I prefer the original taste of the noodles and I particularly did not like sour foods. The sauce was not too sweet nor spicy (chilli flakes were provided to add a stronger spicy flavour!). The dish also had a generous amount of bean sprouts, squid, peanuts and tofu. A miss for me was that the prawn was not the crunchy type that I like. However, the overall taste of the dish was really excellent!

All in all, the place is extremely easy to locate (right behind a bus stop before coronation plaza, next to a bicycle shop) and the food is really awesome! It is right to say that the phrase "never judge a book by its cover" is highly applicable to this eatery. I will definitely want to go back to try the other dishes!

Note: There was no GST and service charge! smile Do note that customers need to pay first before eating.

Pizza Hut is definitely one of my favourite joints to go to to satisfy my pizza cravings! As promised, I came back to pizza hut to try the student lunch special the next day! Talk about loyalty. Haha! The server brought me to a window seat this time and I must say that the seat location added to the relaxing ambience of the non-peak lunchtimes. It was a really nice feeling to watch the world go by with the recent light pop songs playing on the music player overhead as I dug into my pizza!

I ordered the BBQ chicken supreme pizza this time. I love how the crust is soft yet crispy. The pizza was dotted with pineapple chucks, green and red capsicums and topped with chicken chunks, ending up with a generous pour of tangy BBQ sauce. The melty cheese on it added to the sweetness of the dish. (I enjoyed my pizza with a large amount of cheese flakes placed in a bottle on the table).

My student meal also came with the garlic bread. The core of the bread was soft and smooth while the outer part was crispy. It was also pipping hot when it came. I left 1 as my dessert and surprisingly, it remained crispy even after awhile!

I decided to go with the traditional coke choice this time. As i've mentioned before, I prefer plain water to soft drinks so I don't really have a preference for types of soft drink. It was good that it was free flow though! smile

The pizza set meal is cheaper than the pasta at a price of $6.90. With such affordable price and impeccable service, topped off with the great location of the restaurant, I truly look forward to my next visit to Pizza hut!

Set in a heartland place, AMK's New York New York has a pretty chic American concept - café bistro. New York New York has always been the place my friends and I frequent together for our occasional meet-ups. As the other branches nearer to our place has closed down, we decided to venture further to continue our little tradition. Servers who served as were very friendly and it felt quite nice to dine there.

I tried the ginger chocolate this place as they were promoting it as a new drink. The ginger and chocolate combination doesn't really cut it for me and I think the next time round, I'll be good and stay with my usual hot chocolate choice! I'm glad I was adventurous enough to try it though! For those who are suffering from a blocked nose, I think the ginger in this drink will be enough to kick in and clear your nose! (:

Next, I chose my main course - Spicy Seafood Tomato Penne in Parchment Paper - $15.90.

I think the chefs were trying to cater to Singaporean's palate for spice! There were way too much chilli in the dish for me and I had a tough time swallowing every mouth as it gets spicier and spicier as time goes by. Luckily I had my drink to save me. On hindsight, I should've added the cheese in the shakers provided or asked for more tomato sauce to make it less spicy. One of the good thing about this is that they were quite generous in the amount of seafood given. The prawns were crunchy and succulent, squid had a really nice texture and the mussels were not overcooked! The penne pasta was soft and coated with the sauce. I recommend this for those who want to try something spicy!

I really like this place as it has a diner concept where one can chill with their friends over coffee or tea and try out their American style food. I hope the remaining branches will stay strong and survive by bringing more customers in with a new menu.

Quick Lunch Smile Jun 30, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi | Kids-Friendly

Walked over to this Sakae sushi branch to satisfy my Japanese cravings with my mom!

The restaurant is pretty quiet on a weekday, especially during lunch time so the service staff weren't running around at top-speed like when they were during dinner hours. Service was still very prompt nonetheless.

We ordered the mandatory Salmon Sashimi (8 pcs - $9.99). The slices were very fresh, but sadly, weren't as thick as last time. Still, I like the sashimi very much!

Next, came the Chicken Cheese Yakimono ($9.99). I like the cheese on top as it was really rich, but for those who are watching their weights, they should give this a miss as it is laden with a large amount of oil! The chicken was not skinned so the layer of fats is still there. There are about 6-7 pieces. Though, the combination was pretty good. Wished they used lesser oil though!

Lastly, we had the Salmon Karaage ($2.29). It had one piece of salmon cheek and another part of the fish. We usually eat the salmon karaage which was a lot simpler as the bones were already taken out! I kind of like this part (albeit the bones were a hassle). I felt that compared to the karaage, this had a tad less meat, but relatively, this part was quite delicious too!

Overall, I'm very satisfied with this meal at Sakae Sushi as usual. I just wished that the prices would decrease ): Or at least, they could serve a larger portion for the price!

Hor fun OK Jun 30, 2013

Categories : Seafood | Zi Char

I took away this 三捞河粉 (San Lao Hor Fun) the other day when I went home from a friend's place.
I think the food was so-so only.

三捞河粉's bean sprouts are usually plucked out painstakingly by the stall owners but this time it was not. However, I must say that it the portion was still quite generous.

There were only a few pieces of fish inside. I guess the owners wanted to cut cost by sprinkling more bean sprouts in place of fish. For $9 - medium size, the amount of hor fun was quite a lot (more than the main ingredients) which I did not prefer. The dish was quite wet, but not that wet which makes you feel like you were drinking soup.

I also preferred my spring onion to be chopped more finely instead of the fat thick ones given by the chefs.

2 out of 5 stars given for this dish. I felt that there were more misses than hits /:
